Fuck me over, please | Gosh, this town rocks. Someone posts a "play for free in our new, uh, 'venue'" and a bunch of lackeys beg for the honour. Here's one: I'm setting up a horse stable and need bands to shovel shit. No pay, but you get to shovel shit! And maybe at the end of the day, you will SMELL like shit, too! Email me at [email protected] - Wed, 5 Mar 2003 4:36pm

lesbo-chick User Info... | Yeah. Asking musicians to play for free is an insult. Fuck you, you cheap pile of shit. - Wed, 5 Mar 2003 8:07pm
Annoyed at your close-mindedness. | Since when did music start being only for the money? - Thu, 6 Mar 2003 6:11pm
U | No, YOU listen up asshole. Only coaches say "Listen Up", and I hate coaches. - Thu, 6 Mar 2003 6:56pm
Anonymous | lol - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 5:56pm
pissedoffwithpeopleonlivevictoria | You guys are retards,is that all you do all day,sit on your ass and bad mouth other bands, well you don't have a band so go fuck yourselves, and if you do have a band,no one would come to your show even if your mommies did supply the milk and cookies. - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 2:04am
duh User Info... | Yeah - well I play in a band and I think it's insulting for people to ask musicians - even those starting out - to play for free. Unless it's a charity benefit or something. It devalues music - club owners started to think it's okay to pay bands $100 for a gig and stuff like that. - Mon, 10 Mar 2003 11:44pm
Anonymous | I'm sure these guys will keep all you assholes in mind if/when the venue does work out and becomes a success. I think the words he used were: "would like to play for free to see if the venue works out" Its cool to see that at least SOME people will pitch in to help people starting out build something cool. - Thu, 13 Mar 2003 12:07am
Anonymous | hey we already play for the shitty bars in this town for free and they can't anybody new in the doors. what make you think you can do it. oh ya the city will can your ass as soon as they find out about your illegal venue. - Thu, 13 Mar 2003 3:00am
Holmes | So, did they go, like "We're trying out a new venue, so the beer will be free," or, "We're trying out a new venue, can you do the plumbing for free?" or, "We're trying out a new venue so we won't pay the rent this month." I bet: No. So, what they're saying is that musician's work is worthless and it is not important to pay musicians. It's about the money when I have to pay for my amp repairs, practice space, gear, lessons, etc., etc. I'm tired of people thinking that musicians don't work. Fuck you. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 2:49pm
Donnie Black User Info... | We'll play anytime. http://www.zappninblack.com - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 7:38pm

Virge User Info... | so how's the venue going? - Wed, 26 Mar 2003 11:56pm
Apparently... | Does the lack of reply mean anything??? - Mon, 31 Mar 2003 10:53am
vox | Ya know, this sort of thing started with starvers of attention. It is such a drag to be considered not worth anything. Like players are being done a huge fucking favor! "oh, we'll let you play, pack our clubs, sell our booze, and it will only cost you a little time, gas and energy!" This is why the musicians union is such a good idea. If players would stop stroking their own egos long enough to see the value. If we stood in solidarity, this shit would stop! Play for free you losers, NOT! At least the booze should be all you can drink and free!!! Don't do us any favors you fucking leeeeeech!!! - Tue, 1 Apr 2003 1:19pm
iLL~LoGix User Info... | Im not gonna diss or anything, but that is funny that you are all willing to play for free. I think you should have changed the wording to, "one the details are ironed out, we can discuss money". PS- what did dude mean by, "the city will shut down your illegal venue"??? Do you have to register - Tue, 1 Apr 2003 2:34pm
me a dork | Yes, I'd love to play for free. But first, I will bend over, so you can sodomize me. Ah, ah. Now I will play for free. Ah, I love it. - Tue, 1 Apr 2003 9:14pm
20 Minute Monday User Info... | we'de be more then happy to play for free, music's not about money, everyones too god damn corrupt now. send me an e-mail at [email protected], were a young punk band. - Sun, 6 Apr 2003 9:41pm
PFR - 402 | The new venue is..... Diego's!! - Sun, 6 Apr 2003 10:28pm
As if | Thanks. Did the plumbers work for free, btw? (You know, it's not about the money, it's about the plumbing.) - Mon, 7 Apr 2003 10:44am
Holy shit. | Diego's in the new Red Lion? *That's* the venue that you wanted musicians to PLAY FOR FREE at? What a fucking scumbag. - Mon, 7 Apr 2003 10:57am
disgusted | I can`t beleive you retards will play for free! If you think about it, its an hour to load up and get to the gig, aprox. an hour to set up, 4 hrs. playing, tear down, load up,drive home, unload...etc. thats 7 to 8 hours of free service. I think Cathy Lee Giffords sweat shops pay more than that for a day. Any of you bozo`s want to dig out my compost for free? It should only take a couple of hours. and that bit about music is not about money? I`d like to get payed what our band is worth, 800 bucks , but I`ll do it for 600 just cuz it`s a " new venue" - Wed, 9 Apr 2003 4:18pm
Anonymous | agreed. - Wed, 9 Apr 2003 6:10pm
Anonymous | 600???? Ive played venues in this city for less than 100, and we are actually sort of known. - Wed, 9 Apr 2003 6:33pm
Tim User Info... | I'd love to hear what band you're in that you feel you deserve $800 per show. There aren't many venues in this town that are going to fork out that kind of cash to a local act. - Wed, 9 Apr 2003 10:14pm
brainzzz brainzzz User Info... | We are the smoked out brainzzz and we'll play for free plus we'll supply all the weed you can smoke. - Thu, 10 Apr 2003 7:07pm
mr. reason | peolple should get of their high horses and maybe play for the fans man. - Thu, 10 Apr 2003 11:23pm
kurt | my band murder in the first will play an all ages show... if u want...call me (that goes to anyone who has a show!) (250) 338-8715 kurt - Thu, 10 Apr 2003 11:56pm
Holmes | I'm tired of people saying that "it's about the music" or fans or whatever. Don't get me wrong - I love playing music, especially live, but that doesn't mean that my time is worthless. I do not mind donating my time for a benefit or to help someone out. In this case, Diego's at the Red Lion has spent MILLIONS to rebuild and none of the contractors, I would believe, agreed that since they love their work, they would be happy to work for free. You guys who play for free are letting these owners and promoters know that indeed, they can make their money without spending a dime supporting the musicians. When it comes time for you to buy new strings, replace a speaker in your cabinet, or buy a new cymbal, good luck getting reciprocal treatment. H - Fri, 11 Apr 2003 12:51pm
agree with Holmes | Right on Holmes, you must be over 30 with such wisdom.I saw a movie from the 70`s where the band was payed 300 for the night. The same amount that bars pay today. Thats 30 years without a raise. - Fri, 11 Apr 2003 7:12pm
Dave_Steve_Justin User Info... | My band would love to play... But you'd have to shut the Bar down cause we're minors. We may be too Young to Vote, or drink, or alot of things, but we can sure rock out! Thanks PLease Email me @ [email protected] Peace, Dave - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 2:05am
Curious George | Holmes - Maybe if more people had our attitude instead of yours, it wouldn't be so hard to get strings etc. In fact, I've made enough connections in this town through being good natured and helping someone out, that I can get hooked up with the odd patch cord, pack of strings, recording time when I need it. - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 8:29pm
Curious George | The more successful live music venues in town, the more chances there are for people to play. I for one, think it sucks that there's only 3 real venues and a handful of all-age venues for bands to play at. If it takes a couple free shows to get this venue off the ground, I say go for it. Especially newer bands that need the exposure. You think Steamers, Lucky or Logan's is going to bend over backwards to let a band play their first show? Probably not. But this dude probably would. - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 8:31pm
Holmes | I personally know that "Logan's" indeed will bend over... for me... um... you... um... ya. I just think it's crass that this bar asked bands to play for free after spending a truckload of cash rebuilding. Okay? H - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 8:40pm
Anonymous | Hey George ,welcome to Victoria, I left Victoria in the 80`s cuz the biz here sucks, only living in Vancouver sucked even more. No matter where you live , if you want to do your original stuff it better be radio friendly and simple cuz mr. Joe Average just won`t get it if it`s to complicated , so learn your cover tunes if you want to play in this town son. Oh and smooging for stings and patch cords? We had a sax player who we called Larry Bogus, or Mr. Bogus, because he was a cheapskate who was always looking for a hand out. - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 11:35am
