Message Board > Found on the web > Small molecule offers hope for cancer treatment |
_Griphin_ User Info... | http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20070116/cancer_dca_070116/20070116?hub=Health A small, non-toxic molecule may soon be available as an inexpensive treatment for many forms of cancer, including lung, breast and brain tumours, say University of Alberta researchers. (it's way healthier then the usual Chemotherapy treatments according to the story I saw on CTV Newsnet.) But there's a catch: the drug isn't patented, and pharmaceutical companies may not be interested in funding further research if the treatment won't make them a profit. (A shame really) - Tue, 16 Jan 2007 8:38pm
lonemonk User Info... | That entire patent system has to change. The government should fund such things and make sure that universities and labs within Canada continue to be cutting edge. Pharm/Chem companies are becoming the new Insurance companies in that they have all the capital in the world, and they need to hold back treatment in order to get the best overall price. Canada should nationalize all domestic AND foreign companies which continue to profit at the expense of poor people. And, when it comes to a comparison with medicine companies, we are ALL poor as dirt... Canada should also fail to recognize existing patents for the sake of people. Of course, we've signed way too many International agreements to allow that to happen, but it should still happen for the better of humanity. I guess while we're nationalizing stuff, we should start to ignore those agreements. We need to create a CUBA North! Just like Patenting genes, or parts of the DNA system. The entire concept should be wiped off the face of the planet and outright banned. Failure to do so will eventually spell our early demise, and that's a promise... . . There is one thing that capitalism will never learn: Some things just should not be made into profitable items. . - Wed, 17 Jan 2007 10:33am Edited: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 10:40am
