Message Board > Controversy and Quarantine > site admin - When are you dump this POS forum? |
bbjones User Info... | Seriously. Stop hacking together garbage and just implement some real software. You obviously don't have enough time to design and code online forums properly. No, I'm not talking about the rest of this site, just the message boards. All I'm asking for is you follow the standards out there and use what works. It isn't hard. My latest case in point is whatever new POS feature you added about timing out edits on posts. I was putting together a detaild post in another thread. When I went to save it, rather than seeing the retarded "enter your password" thing you built in, now all I get is a message saying "can't edit post more than 5 minutes old". Fine. Except not fine. My post is gone and I'm no longer in edit mode. I'm not sure how to explain to you how utterly wrong it is to lose end user input. If you can't grasp fundamentals of writing software then please don't bother. Or at least limit your experiments to your own hobby time instead of trying to run a commerical website. No, this is not the first time I've been through crap like this on this website which is why I'm so obviously pissed about it. Cheers. P.S. Yes I had to copy paste this somewhere else to write it then post it so I don't lose my post again. And also a yes, I've tried to submit this type of feedback in private but someone doesn't give a shit and refuses to listen to advice. So here we go in public again... - Fri, 25 Jul 2008 2:06pm Edited: Fri, 25 Jul 2008 2:09pm

Chopper User Info... | 'And also a yes, I've tried to submit this type of feedback in private but someone doesn't give a shit and refuses to listen to advice.' Depends on how you deliver said advice. I've had no issues with Nev the few times I've emailed him about last weekends issues. I do agree that going with something else might work better, but as long as the code he's done keeps his clients happy then that's all that matters. Are there issues? Yeah, but there mostly small glitches that are fixed pdq. - Fri, 25 Jul 2008 2:36pm
Sedlec User Info... | Good and valid post. The other music message boards I go to usually use phpBB with all these great features: http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/ If I log out here on LiveVic then I can't go back and edit my post. Or the option of quoting what someone says isnt there. Not to be a complainer, but it would be nice to see people's "avatars" displayed properly instead of having to press on "user info" and then having the whole page reloaded again to show their image. Or even to private message someone say if they are in the musicians forum, it would make things more efficient. I've been told that they won't modify the board because everyone has their user profiles set up in the musician resources/band resources section... I don't think it would be a big deal if people had to create all new accounts again for a new awesome message board. The bloodred board is a good example of a stable board: http://forum.bloodredmetalheads.com/index.php and yes its good to keep with web standards.... - Fri, 25 Jul 2008 2:36pm Edited: Fri, 25 Jul 2008 2:38pm
Sedlec User Info... | and here's another good one, so many options http://www.vbulletin.com/ - Fri, 25 Jul 2008 2:43pm
Zedius User Info... | I agree there could be some improvements here, but it's not worth getting mad over. I've never paid a dime to live victoria, so it doesn't owe me anything. Thanks to Nev for offering this free service! - Fri, 25 Jul 2008 2:58pm
KRIEG User Info... | Agree with those who vote for change. This message board should be taken out back and put to rest. - Fri, 25 Jul 2008 3:44pm

Nicholas Antoni Marek Gibas User Info... | Wow how good of a board do we need for the retarded threads that get posted here? This is suiting considering this board is full of half-heads anyway. - Sat, 26 Jul 2008 1:23pm
Chopper User Info... | Cause you're such a mental giant right Nic? - Sat, 26 Jul 2008 2:21pm
Sati User Info... | HAHAHA AAAAAAAaAUUUUUUUUUUURGH I just went to write a polite post and the timeout thing happened to me! Yeah, I'm with you on this, I've talked to people in Vancouver who won't post because they say our boards don't work. Its unfair when people can't post to active discussions about themselves. And Nev's obviously too busy to finish this up the way he wants, so does someone here have the skills/inclination to help make the transition to a new board? He's done it once before for another client and moving the accounts over was tedious and time consuming. Seriously, anyone? BB, would you and nev just rip each others' throats out by now or what? C'mon, its been too long, lets do what it takes to make this happen. - Sat, 26 Jul 2008 3:24pm
Spinvis User Info... | Just get peeps to sign up with new accounts! off with the old on with the new. What does it mean when some threads are in BOLD when I'm logged in? - Sat, 26 Jul 2008 3:48pm
Mike User Info... | the Bloodred Board is a rental forum.. not sure what the cost is of that kind of board. - Sat, 26 Jul 2008 5:08pm
Nicholas Antoni Marek Gibas User Info... | "Cause you're such a mental giant right Nic?" I never made any solid claims. I'm just young and willing to accept new ideas. Unlike 95% of the population here. - Sun, 27 Jul 2008 12:04am Edited: Sun, 27 Jul 2008 12:04am

Chopper User Info... | 'I'm just young and willing to accept new ideas. Unlike 95% of the population here.' Oh so being human is the issue. Although I guess If we all could think the same thoughts and have the same feelings, like nice little automatons... That would make the world a lot better... - Sun, 27 Jul 2008 12:51pm
BBJones User Info... | Fuck. Lost another post in another thread. Not to mention there are script errors on every page. Anyways, Sati, I'm all for helping this POS go away but really, someone else out there will likely have done forum work more recently than I have. I did many phpBB sites from scratch but that was about 5 years ago. From what I recall the hardest part was customizing it. Not that it's hard, but it takes time if you want custom graphics for all the buttons. Outside of that it was about 2 hours from start to finish. The main questions are about what hosting capabilities youg guys have. This site is php so a php BB should be a good fit and I konw you run a mySQL backend so you should be fine technology wise. Anyways, if you want help I'll help. But again you might want to post asking for help and find someone who has more time and recent experience than I do. Not to menion you'll have to spend some time thinking about what functionality you want or don't want since those forum packages have it all. Cheers. P.S. You other knobs can stop hijacking now. - Mon, 28 Jul 2008 8:42am Edited: Mon, 28 Jul 2008 8:43am
DOOMHAMMER User Info... | This pops up every couple years, I argued about php and vbulletin last time and his excuse was how they are too easily hacked. I do agree that while this could be a semi decent forum, it is full of trolling and idiocy half the time (but I also think that this horrible layout and bugs keep more than half the people away). You could actually help promote a better community and create more discussion by having a better forum. This is by far the most outdated, buggy, and 1994ish type forum I use. - Mon, 28 Jul 2008 6:23pm
Sedlec User Info... | "You could actually help promote a better community and create more discussion by having a better forum." Totally agreed, it would indeed get rid of alot of the trolling... if I compare it to the other music forums I go to that have proper phpBB..its much more user friendly. this format is a good example http://www.albertametal.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=1 - Mon, 28 Jul 2008 8:44pm
ak User Info... | those metal forums look so atrociously bad. i can't believe that there is a real uprising to get a new forum going on for livevictoria - this one is fine even with all it's limitations. if anyone can write a better one, i encourage them to do so, for free and then implement it for all the existing users on here. - Tue, 29 Jul 2008 3:30am
Sedlec User Info... | I'm not referring to the specific aesthetics of that example as indeed its not a nice look, I'm talking about the type of forum as an example. - Tue, 29 Jul 2008 7:04am
Tyler User Info... | my forum of choice is like this place but a lot more minimal: http://vivalavinyl.org I agree that the alberta metal forum looks horrible. this one is seriously fine. what's your problem? who cares about editing posts? why does any of this matter? - Tue, 29 Jul 2008 8:14am
Mike User Info... | Those metal forums are all Phpbb forums.. They are customizable however you like.. http://www.phpbb.com/ - Tue, 29 Jul 2008 10:25am
Hearse User Info... | DH: but I also think that this horrible layout and bugs keep more than half the people away What he says. Like Windows, Mac, and Linux, the most popular choice attracts the most bullshit. Every 'standard' forum I've used has to hassle with tonnes of garbage posts. The site-custom ones I go to deal with way less. Do you really want to wade through three pages of Nigeria Scams and 'free Dell computer!' posts to get to your argument about the best drummers? DO YOU? - Tue, 29 Jul 2008 11:51pm
Mordock User Info... | This is bar none the most laughably pathetic messageboard I've ever posted on. Pitiful design and user interface...and totally lacking in even the most basic of features one would expect from a nowadays online forum. But as previously mentioned, this place has an overwhelming percentage of half-tards posting on it anyway...so the quality of the board is actually fitting. - Wed, 30 Jul 2008 12:45am
trevor corey User Info... | !?!"as previously mentioned, this place has an overwhelming percentage of half-tards " ?! You sound like a nerdhole who either never gets laid, or needs to come to terms with his homosexuality and go get yourself a nice boyfriend. Tell your mommy to stop using so much starch when she does your laundry, you uptight, condescending, self-righteous, techno dork. This thread was started as a constructive criticism of the format, not to attack the character of it's users. - Wed, 30 Jul 2008 9:36am
JDL User Info... | "This is bar none the most laughably pathetic messageboard I've ever posted on. Pitiful design and user interface...and totally lacking in even the most basic of features one would expect from a nowadays online forum." so why not give up your free time and help this FREE service out by doing something about it; instead of pointing out the obveous, like others have been doing? All I see, for the most part, are complaints and what this board "should have". But you seem to miss out that the people in charge dont do this for a living; its in their time away from work they get to fix these things(unless im otherwise sadly mistaken). I have no problems in posting or using this site AT ALL. And without this site(even the way it is), I wouldn't have met the variety of awesome musicians I've had the pleasure of jamming with. But alas, pleasing everyone is apprently impossible(who'd have thunk? lol) - Wed, 30 Jul 2008 11:57am
trevor corey User Info... | I'm sorry Mordoch, whoever you are. I went way over the top. I thought you were picking on Andrew and Ji. - Wed, 6 Aug 2008 12:23pm
BBJones User Info... | Love that pic, Trev (no, not that kinda love). Anyways... O M F G! Please tell me this isn't true: - This retarded (yes truely retarded) 5 minute timeout feature is not just if you've been holding an edit window open for 5 minutes, but any post that was posted more than 5 minutes ago can never be edited again regardless of if another post was made after it or not. Really? Is that the case? You really did that on purpose? WTF is wrong with you? And never mind that it is the most rediculous concept or forum feature ever created, but you did it with no other notification to the user apart from after the fact. Wow... 100% garbage. The 10 hours you spent adding in that code could have easily been spent replacing the entire forum to something that works properly. - Thu, 7 Aug 2008 10:11am
Chopper User Info... | Code something better or stfu. Oh noes! You might have to actually be accountable for something you've written rather than being able to edit it whenever you please. Some cheese with that whine? - Sun, 10 Aug 2008 11:27am
BBJones User Info... | Heyt thanks for the insight, Chopper. I guess you're both blind and stupid. If your brian synapses would fire every now and then you might realize this has nothing to do with accountability but more to do with keeping posts relevant and accurate. Most forum software will show the edit history... Besides, nothing makes you shut up so why should I? - Mon, 11 Aug 2008 10:46am Edited: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 10:49am
moron User Info... | The new 5 minute post timeout can fuck itself in the ass. Lost two posts so far in the last 48 hours, anti-spam measures should not be so heavy handed as to cripple the usability of the board. Cheers - Mon, 11 Aug 2008 5:04pm
Hearse User Info... | This time-out happens on lots of common UBB boards as well. Y'all need a bit of perspective, especially if this is the worst thing you got to complain about. - Thu, 14 Aug 2008 8:43am
Jl User Info... | "The new 5 minute post timeout can fuck itself in the ass" if it takes more than 5 minutes to type out your feelings; go talk to someone that cares :) OR you could just write a post in wordpad; and by using copy/paste, you can save yourself from a lost post... but that again takes a whole minute longer. UH OH! - Thu, 14 Aug 2008 2:38pm
The Professor User Info... | Hey Everyone, I've been super-neglectful of late and for that I apologize I've been slammed with so many things I haven't even realized there was a problem. The 5 minute timeout was a bug that crept in when I fixed another problem. I've removed it entirely. I'm sorry I let it slide for so long. In the future, PLEASE email me ([email protected]) if something goes wrong and I'll deal with it as fast as I can. I just don't have time to read the board as often as I'd like. As for setting up another forum software. I've been over this before, and the main reasons for not doing it are: a) it would be a tragedy to lose 5 years of posts, and b) it would be a pain in the ass for people to have to log in separately to the board, and to the rest of the site. I know with phpBB you can integrate logins, I've actually done it n another site I built for a client (www.kidsinvictoria.com), but it's a nightmare. I could probably build every feature of that forum easier than dealing with an integrated login system and all the snags that go with being tied to another system. So, if you've got features you want to see, please email me, if you want a different forum software, set it up yourself. - Tue, 19 Aug 2008 8:13pm
BBJones User Info... | You run this site as a business and should expect these types of negative and critical reactions to poorly implemented changes or "features". We are not your testers. Your reasons for keeping this POS forum are bunk. Plain and simple. There is no point trying to argue with you about it as you've made clear year after year. Cheers - Wed, 20 Aug 2008 7:43am
DOOMHAMMER User Info... | Fuck the five years of posts, bring on a new forum to actually make posting worth it. And who the fuck cares if you have to log in the main site and the forum if the forum actually works. Truth is you did spend a lot of time making this, but now its painfully outdated and holding onto old shit doesnt make sense. But ah well, if you want to hold onto a shitty forum its your call and no one elses. - Wed, 20 Aug 2008 7:06pm
Sedlec User Info... | 5 years of posts? who would ever go back 5 years to view a post... just gotta say... agreed with Doomhammer - Wed, 20 Aug 2008 7:48pm
Hearse User Info... | Whenever I've sent email to Nev about a board problem or post I needed removed, he's been nothing but civil and helpful. Every board has its peccadilloes and every board has its assholes who bitch about them. Given the options: Do nothing, get bitched at by people who want things to be different. Do something, get bitched at by people who want things to stay the same. I know which I'd choose. - Thu, 21 Aug 2008 1:57pm
Mike User Info... | I see it this way.. the forum achieves for me what I need it to.. dont really care otherwise. - Thu, 21 Aug 2008 5:31pm
