Dear Victoria Jaks,

I have grown up in Victoria knowing of the Jaks, knowing a few individual Jaks, and in general liking the Jaks who I have met. But. The other day I went outside to the back of my apartment and noticed that, among the other many tags, there was a nice fresh tag entitled "Jak's". I shook my head, felt a little pissy, but continued on with my day. Later on, I was sitting on my porch and noticed that on the wall of the church across the way (in Esquimalt) there was an identical tag. "Jak's" - on the fresh, *untagged* wall of my neighbourhood Catholic church. For the record, though I don't believe it is highly relevant, I am one of the least religious and/or spiritual people one could meet. But this... this fucking pissed me off. I guess one of the things that really got me is that every Sunday night, there is an NA meeting in the basement of this church, and I often sit on my porch with a smoke and hear the friendly chatter and goodbyes from the meeting frequenters. I may not believe in the the church, but I believe in community. For whoever may have tagged the property, shame on you. And if you are a member of the Jaks, perhaps you might think about going and cleaning up your "brother's" work. And on a far more shallow level... all of the grafitti I have seen says "Jak's". Certainly, if one is tagging it on behalf of the name of the group, it would be spelled "Jaks". And if one is taking ownership of the tagged property on behalf of the group, grammatically, it should be spelled Jaks'. Grammar aside, I'm just fucking disappointed. To think that I once respected you guys. - Wed, 11 Apr 2012 1:33am
