Message Board > Controversy and Quarantine > Steve at Runwaystudios to record the Parish’s new album to be released on Delinquent Records! |
Go Victoria Go! User Info... | Ok it’s not fully confirmed but it sounds like the Parish may record with Steve from runway rehearsal studios! Looks like Steve’s Live Vic advertising strategy has finally paid off… Big time! Eat that LTR! Steve wins!!!!! - Sat, 2 Oct 2010 12:40am
steve User Info... | hahahah.. wow these thin skinned LTR kids sure got their little panties all in a knot. Sorry guys for being vocal about my place and how its an alternative place to rehearse and record. I can understand how utterly ridiculous it is for me to generate business from this site. Would like to take this opportunity to thank Nev and the rest for this place.. not only has it provided minutes of wondrous entertainment but it has also given a venue for me to communicate directly with bands and let them know I even exist. I do not feel like I am in any sort of direct competition with LTR and for the most part I have a very good and healthy relationship with others who are doing the same or similar as myself. Also.. who cares if the Perish come here to track a few songs. Am I going to turn away the business cause of the situation here on livevic (see 'minutes of entertainment' comment above)... a paying customer is a paying customer. Nice thing too is that while they're here they wont have to worry about limiting their volume level or disrupting neighbouring business. - Sat, 2 Oct 2010 1:46pm Edited: Sat, 2 Oct 2010 1:49pm

steve User Info... | Who ever posted it is a marketing genius... thank you Go Victoria Go. That steep climb there at the end starts at Oct.2nd.. If I was smarter than I am I would have started this thread. MC.. who would ever post under a fake accout? Thats just crazy talk... like imagine if some guy pretended to be a hot girl that... wait. - Mon, 4 Oct 2010 2:07am Edited: Mon, 4 Oct 2010 2:13am
::Saint:: User Info... | Runway Studios is run by Steve, who is a very professional, honest, and reasonable human being, with a realistic sense of entitlement and self-importance. Based on that, it would be impossible for Runway Studios to be in direct competition with LTR. I should also add that marketing to people with more money than sense has been a staple of almost every successful business in the history of the world .. recording The Perish seems like a smart move to me. - Mon, 4 Oct 2010 1:21pm
Go Victoria Go! User Info... | Wo hoo! Am I reading that right??? 24 visits and up 62.5%! That’s amazing! I’m so glad to help you out. I guess I am a marketing genius… And I didn’t even know that. And hey, don’t get all down on yourself and be all like “If I was smarter than I am I would have started this thread.” Because you are smart Steve… like in a previous thread when you were all like “And yeah.. I am trying to 'cash in on an unfortunate situation'... know why.. cause thats what smart businesses do.” And your totally right! That works especially well when your in a smallish nitch community of people looking for your type of services. I’ll make sure to visit your site on a daily basis, and I implore everyone who reads this to do the same. Let’s shoot for like 35 views a day! Together we can totally kick LTR’s ass! ...Well at least in the website views department! - Mon, 4 Oct 2010 8:43pm

steve User Info... | GoVic, Yeah 24 visits... up almost 63% Wow hey! Especially since I just enabled google analytics the other day. http://www.runway-studios.com was in shambles for awhile there and I found some time to re work it and added a few cool 'widgets' (what they're called apparently)... I guess it only starts recording hits once you enable it.. which would explain why it looks like absolutely no one went there the whole month previous. Regardless I do think that starting a thread with 'the Perish' and my studio name in the title was a brilliant marketing idea. My business model is based on providing an affordable alternative. Most bands can't afford $500+ on a set of quality recordings and yet still want to record their songs. If I can provide that to them then fantastic. If I can drum up some business because another studio space is drawing negative attention on themselves then so be it. Am I serving a 'small niche community'? Yes, like any other recording and rehearsal Studio (Save for those in New York and L.A. i imagine) Now I assume that by referencing my admittance to 'cashing in on an unfortunate situation... because thats what smart businesses do.' you are implying that I am in some way a bad person, perhaps even unethical in my practices. That can be your opinion and I won't argue that with you. What I would like to point out is that by the same token Lemon Tree is equally if not more guilty. Where as my 'attention grabbing' did draw some attention... I don't think it in took business or competed at all with Lemon Tree. Dont think I didnt try but those that rehearse at LTR do some out of convenience. I am located in Sidney, the 20min drive is too daunting. Furthermore my target client base for recording are those who can't or don't want to pay 'big bucks'and repeat customers/referrals. In contrast the business practices of LTR that you are so valiantly defending did/does impede and negatively effect another business and those it employs. Quite significantly from the sounds of things, cashing in on a negative situation as it were. I am not sure how you have come to perceive this as a Runway vs. LTR issue. I wish them the best, my clients need a place to rehearse and not everyone can rehearse at pro jam. Hey.. I just thought of another great marketing idea... if LTRs crew would stop bringing this up and trying to call me out.. maybe it will all blow over? just a thought. - Mon, 4 Oct 2010 11:05pm Edited: Mon, 4 Oct 2010 11:06pm
Go Victoria Go! User Info... | I just realized that you are a marketing genius after all Steve. You started that thread titled “Lemontree is amazing”. I bet that they have got 10’s of views on their website from you doing that alone. It’s sheer brilliance!... But why Steve? Why advertise for those guy’s??? Those LTR kids/crew have barely any skin, and frankly should probably just go away. Isn’t it clear enough that we don’t like them? They should probably find another local Victoria musician website/message board to post on. Also, I looked at their website, and let me tell you it’s nothing special. At least on your site people can play with your widgets all day long if they want. Not the LTR kids/crew though… They can go play with their own widgets as far as I’m concerned. You’re so right by saying “by the sounds of things” how they negatively affect another business and those it employs. That’s another thing I like about you… Your willingness to stick up for people and take a stand… so by the sound of things I’m with you! Good point however about your clients needing a place to rehearse and I guess if pro jam is all booked then it’s totally fine for them to go to Lemontree. It’s not exactly what you said but it sure seems like that’s what you’re getting at (wink wink). After all if your clients can’t practice they probably won’t need to record! - Tue, 5 Oct 2010 10:23pm
steve User Info... | You're really quite funny. And yes that was what I was getting at, if pro jam is full bands should rehearse at LTR or any of the other spaces. I support LTR in their pursuit to provide (really nice) rehearsal space and recording/photo graphy/label services. As long as their doing it in a way that doesn't impede the ability of another business to operate. wink wink 'the LTR kids.. can go play with their own widgets' -thats funny. - Tue, 5 Oct 2010 11:28pm
::Saint:: User Info... | It's good to lead by example, I say. For instance, Lemon Tree Records has done a wonderful job providing us all with a perfect example of why children shouldn't run businesses, and now this thread is here to give us an example of how said children and/or their ironically anonymous friends should give up on attempting things that they clearly aren't cut out for, like winning arguments with their "smarts". In all seriousness, I've known Colin for awhile now, but after seeing how LTR has responded to people's concerns and complaints on this board about their business, I can't think of anything that would convince to entrust my music, my schedule, or my gear with these people. Steve is certainly not the problem; all he has done is capitalize on other people's stupidity by offering a better alternative to these petty and immature shenanigans. - Wed, 6 Oct 2010 1:02am
Go Victoria Go! User Info... | Steve, you’re a good sport, and I think that you’re probably “getting this”. I commend you. As for ::Saint::… Well that’s just too easy… “It's good to lead by example, I say.”… That’s tempting but I’m just going to leave it. But I will say that I don’t think Steve needs your buddy Backup or you speaking for him. You just really don’t add anything to the subject. And I’m still not sure why you guy’s think I’m somehow associated with LTR, cause I’m not. I’m just a concerned musician who is getting tired of seeing childish behaviour and hearsay comments… gang mentality no less. If you have a real problem, then go see or deal with it for yourself in person, maybe then you can be taken seriously. Or… We can all hear LTR in action for ourselves on… Thursday October 8th at Logans when Runway-studios Proudly Presents: Year of the Rat/The New Colors/and Liquid Tuesdaze??(really??? Tuesdaze, that’s almost as bad as Device Box or actually having a fohawk) Anyway’s there’s some free advertising for you guy’s, compliments of me! Now lets all move on over to Facebook and join Chris Logans highly anticipated Facebook group and give those LTR guy’s some more what for! - Wed, 6 Oct 2010 6:25pm

This is our forum for these things... if you dont like it; then dont come into the thread. Just because you dont like what's going on doesn't mean adding a thread like this is helping the situation. Why dont you do something about it then? If you're so sick of seeing all this "bashing"; then do something yourself. Until then, I will continue to express my opinion whether you like it or not. steve User Info... | Oct.28th two.. eight... 28, and don't forget Raw War. Go Vic... Do you have anything positive to say or you just going to continue being sarcastic and over dramatic? Take a read and you'll see that you're blowing this way out proportion. 'This' being my position and influence on the matter. You rarely make sense and your references are for the most part mis-interperated at best. I am not sure what it is that you are trying to accomplish but I do hope that in someway you have positive intentions. If not and you simply decided to chime in on a topic that beyond being a musician you have nothing to do with (Your words not mine). And without offering anything constructive have instead chosen to antagonize the situation further and try and call me out. Then I feel sorry for you. again.. 28th of Oct. .. at logans pub.. 19+ (sorry go vic) http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=154402767909911&ref=ts ...first you try to ridicule the fact that 'the perish' might record some songs here. Then you take a dig at my website and widgets (to which I am quite fond) then you try and spout off about band names and hair cuts... do you understand how immature and pathetic that makes you seem? .... ::Saint:: User Info... | First of all, it's 'fauxhawk', and if you don't know how to spell something, you probably shouldn't be making fun of it. Otherwise it's like the word has tricked you into making fun of yourself. I guess what I'm saying is that you were outsmarted by a fauxhawk. Congrats. I guess it's an indication of just how weak your argument has become when your best digs are about the name of a band I was in 2 years ago (and I'll admit it was a terrible name), and my chosen hair style. I'm sorry if having a stripe of longer hair in the middle of my head offends your sensibilities, but we can't all pull off the unkempt hipster-bangs and an ironic beard. I also like to wear pants that don't make me look like an eleven year old girl, are you going to make fun of that, too? I get the whole "I'm just a concerned musician" blah blah blah, but hey I've got news for you .. you're not that special; that phrase describes practically everybody else on this board, and apparently most of us disagree with you. And I could see where you're coming from if this was just a matter of a bunch of jerks ganging up on some poor, innocent person just because we're assholes, but the fact is that this conversation (and all subsequent threads) has sprung up as a direct reaction to LTR's inappropriate and/or non-existent handling of the original complaint. We may not always see eye-to-eye, or play nice with each other, but there is a community of musicians and music-minded people in this city, and what LTR has done, whether intentionally or no, is piss off that community. All of this is just a natural consequence of that. - Thu, 7 Oct 2010 10:55am

steve User Info... | no offense to anyone else Ive worked with but that raw war session has been one of my most enjoyable. Great guys.. great passion for what they do and really helped open my eyes up to a bunch of genres I didn't necessarily appreciate before. 7" should be available by November sometime and I am really looking forward to having them back in the studio. Codine Vandal User Info... | *ponders whether he should take the bait...... - Fri, 8 Oct 2010 4:39am
Jl User Info... | take the bait? are you kidding me? He's trying to run a legitimate business and all you can do is shit on the guy; whether its the perish or raw war or anyone for that matter, its money coming in the door. Its pretty basic actually. And perhaps that's why alot of studio's fail... the willingness to do what it takes to get ahead*(some find that as "selling out"; but I see it as money in my pocket, at the end of the day we're all subject to the same bullshit in this industry. Why not make ends meat at least?) But I do side with Scott's comment... you are a sucker for punishment :P (mostly because of the PPPPPPEERRRIIISSSH; though I did find a moderately cool metal band named PERISH... not "the" perish, just "perish"... they're on myspace) - Fri, 8 Oct 2010 7:11am
Codine Vandal User Info... | ummm i'm actually friends with steve so your argument is pretty fruitless.i was just poking a little fun at him and if you think he's a sucker for punishment you obviously haven't heard the hartless recordings he did, that was pretty punishing. Don't worry though he'll be recording SON soon too so you guys will have some new ammo for your insults. As always, your resident douchebag Codine Vandal - Fri, 8 Oct 2010 7:36am
Jl User Info... | oh nice! well there's been alot of bashing on him and I dont think he deserves it. Like I said, he's trying to run a legitimate business. Some may argue that's all LTR is 'trying' to do. But the difference is, on one hand you have someone willing to work with the community at large and the other isn't. LTR may have made claims they are working with the landlord; its apparent that the landlord doesn't give a shit. So as a RESPONSIBLE business owner, I would go down to Logans(dont worry kids they aren't gunna lecture you; they just wanna work this out!?!) and man up to me causing a problem. Im just sayin'; that's all! Codine on the subject of your music; I was listening to your stuff a little more... And I def. think it would be worth either popping more backing vocals in there to strengthen your vocal melodies OR try singing above the music rather than blending in with it(if that makes any sense lol sorry its hard to convey a message typing it out). I find its very QOTSA, not so much Kyuss(i know they're pretty much one in the same). Heavy, but it could use that extra something to make you guys sound way bigger and crunchier... I think putting focus on your main vocals or even adding in harmonies/backnig vocals will do that. For the record, I've never insulted a band for their musical ability or writing... We're all in this to acheive the same goal, why not help instead of hinder. Good luck! - Fri, 8 Oct 2010 9:47am Edited: Fri, 8 Oct 2010 9:48am
Codine Vandal User Info... | yeah we get the QOTSA reference a lot. those demos are pretty weak in general and i've improved as a singer but i just don't see the point in trying to polish those turds so i'll just wait till we got something a little more respectable up there. our new stuff is a bit of a departure from the other stuff though, some of it heavier some of it more psychedelic and some of it more lo fi. we are a diverse band for sure, that's only a small portion of our stuff, some of our oldest songs at this point. 3 of them were written with our old singer before he left so we've only had since february to come into our own on the songs and those were recorded in april. we are planning on re-recording oh yeah and hard on with steve, so hopefully there will be a marked improvement in quality.Wanna come to our show next friday? I got a spare ticket. On a side note, It's Getting Harder was done with Reason on my keyboard. even the solo. - Fri, 8 Oct 2010 10:07am Edited: Fri, 8 Oct 2010 10:17am
steve User Info... | ... hold on.. there has been 'alot of bashing' of me lately? other than Go vics little attempts at rattling some chains I haven't seen anything.. Rob.W thought I might be confrontational but I think we sorted that out. Maybe you're talking about Saint making fun of unkept bangs and ironic beard.. JL.. before I started doing this 'studio' thing I watched a few friends and acquaintances make a go of it. I am trying to learn from their mistakes. And if that means that I have to work with a few bands whose music I don't initially love then so be it. I would rather be able to offer Raw War the opportunity to come in and record their 7" for under 150$, help them get their songs out to their fans, and help realize an ambition.. all for a price that the band can afford. Some of you may know that my day job isn't recording but instead Real Estate.. and it was through Real Estate that I envisioned this business model for Runway-Studios. In Real Estate you can make a lot of money selling a property valued at 1million dollars. Close to $17k give or take. .. thing is though you can make more money selling 3 properties for $333k. Closer to $20k..... also in any given month there are more properties valued around 400K that sell than around the million dollar mark... providing more potential clients and sources of income. I took that approach and applied it to the recording studio. Lot more bands have $300 and want to spend $300 than have $1000+..... Can I afford to be picky.. Kinda but not really.. Would I like to be picky? Kinda but not really. I do this for fun.. I do this to help get music out there.. and finally I do this to cover the rent for the space and maybe some new gear once and awhile. -steve - Fri, 8 Oct 2010 11:16am
