Platoon User Info... | Say you are a small independant band, like nearly everyone here. Is it better to do everything yourself and then get your music on a distro or hook up with a small record company and let them in on your music? - Tue, 30 May 2006 1:33am
Spinvis User Info... | Depends on what you want to do with it exactly. The label will finance your release and it alot of cases also finance the recording budget. Its great exposure for the band. If you do it yourself then depends on how experienced you are? You can send it to distros, but if you're on a label that already has decent distrubution they do it for you. I don't know of many small record labels that have alot of restrictions to the music... - Tue, 30 May 2006 10:45am
Jeremy Baker User Info... | if you get on a "cool" label then it will do you many favours. - Tue, 30 May 2006 12:20pm
lonemonk User Info... | You might have to pay for those 'favours' though. Nothing is free when someone else is representing you. Of course it ain't free to run your own, but you'll know exactly where your money is going. - Tue, 30 May 2006 4:02pm
mactac User Info... | being on a label gets you distribution (hopefully). Getting any real distribution without a label's help is near impossible. if you are a band & want to do it all yourself, do yourself a favour & start your own label at least. (which is as easy as coming up with a name & registering the business) the other thing a label will do is help you with contacts & networking, and most of all hook you up with other bands to play with when you are starting out & starting to break, being on a label will usually help a lot. the time to think about doing it yourself is when you think you can get the distribution & don't want to be giving away a percentage anymore.... but you'd be surprised how much work it is to deal with distribution, shipping, returns , etc etc. I really can't think of too many REAL reasons why you would not want to be signed to a label , uless you sign a really bad contract... (ie that ties you up for too long). A label deals with the crap, leverages their contacts & ability to sell & lets you focus on the music, which is what you should be doing ! I've both been signed & tried to do it myself & would never want to do it myself again if there was someone willing to sign me & do it for me. - Tue, 30 May 2006 4:40pm
