Troutbreath | There is so much slagging on this site over spelling and grammar, some of it quite nasty, that I thought I should mention this. Research has shown that backlighted text, such as the text on a computer monitor is processed in a different area of the brain than frontlighted text, or the text we read in a book or newspaper. This difference is shown to cause errors in the way we perceive backlighted text and to increase the problem of correcting those errors. So, if there are problems with a persons spelling, lighten up, it's not a sign that they are any less intelligent. It is all part of the medium we are using. - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 11:27am

Anonymous | bullshit...it's pure laziness. For example, 99% of people don't know the difference between your and you're, then and than, accept or except, or if they do, they don't care. Think back man, you learned the difference in grade 4. How does that make you feel, knowing an 11 year old kid spells better than you do? Don't be lazy, do it right or the english language will end up going the way of ebonics, and then we'll all look like total idiots. Aight? - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 1:14pm
Troutbreath | The human brain recognizes words in two ways. We perceive the shape of the word and we then break the word down into individual letters. In the case of very common words; and, the, in, we don't need to know what the individual letters are. This takes place in two different centers of the brain. There are some perceptual problems that get in the way of the smooth co-ordination of these two areas. Dyslexia for example interferes with the way words are processed. The researchers were aware of these problems and were looking deeper into the process when they came across the backlit, frontlit dilemma. There are many reasons why people may not use language correctly, laziness is only one of them. - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 5:02pm

Anonymous | I worked with academics for a long time and at times I'd run into those who couldn't spell a thing properly but they became very well respected researchers and instructors despite this problem. Its not "intelligence" or "laziness". We all have strengths and weaknesses. - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 5:26pm
Anonymous | I know some people who are very intelligent; they can do multi-variable calculus, thermodynamics, and remember all sorts of technical information, but they can't remember how to spell properly. - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 5:49pm
fuck tradition | I think it is funny as hell that someone would waste their time correcting people on spelling or grammer. Now these people must be super bright and have no other way to be productive. Fuck the English language. Be realistic, write how you talk, not how we are told to talk. Werd. - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 6:17pm

Anonymous | i don't think that spelling their/they are is all that difficult...i can understand with larger words (such as "metal" or "punk") but he medium is not an excuse for using the wrong word. - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 7:29pm
Dr.LOAD | I can see proper spelling being needed in things such as legal contracts and scientific papers as these are hard records and need total clearity, but in todays society (like this board) as long as you can clearly convey your opinions and information in an understandable manner who really cares? I think that people who correct those of us who spell poorly are insecure and need a reason to feel superior to others. I can't spell worth a darn, and I'm proud of it, thanks to Troutbreath for starting this post. - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 9:18pm
