jamaylott User Info... | hey there everyone, had my first open-mic ever at steamers on Monday. I went up a little after this guy who rapped. his beats were good, but unfortunately about 20 people got up and left while he was up there. what really pissed me off though, is after he drove everyone out of the bar, he didn't even stay to listen to the last few people, what an ass. Anyway, the purpose of this post is as follows: As a current math major at UVIC, i took the liberty of crunching some numbers. There are about 4 million people in BC, and i would say it is more than fair to say that over 3.5 million of us watch TV, considering that over 2.8 million of us watched HOUSE last week. I was thinking the other day about how much time Ive spent watching re-runs since i was 12. Even though, i have never actually owned a TV or had cable in my house, i still think it would be fair to say that i watched about 12 to 20 hours of re-runs every year since i was about 15. so, multiply that by 5, and we got a grand total of 50 hours in 5 years. now, lets say, that in the last 5 years, everyone who watched TV, *wasted* or rather, spent, 50 hours (which is probably very low-ball considering that is only about 16 30 minute re-runs per year) watching re-runs, just because "there wasn't anything else to do." So here we go: 3.5 million people X 10 hours of re-runs a year X 5 years = 175,000,000 hours spent watching shows we have ALREADY SEEN, and probably get 0 benifit from. I say zero benifit because what do you acctually gain out of watching the same sit-com episode twice? a laugh? read some Douglas Adams or Roddy Doyle (the commitments), go to a comedy Club, if you have to watch TV, go rent a Movie from a local video store like Night Hawk. That means, that in our province alone, we have spent, and i truly mean spent, over 175,000,000 hours watching TV, THAT WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN BEFORE in the last 5 years. wtf!? Okay, we all need our down time, but why not do something enriching, practise or develop a new skill. And anyone who says "but i don't have any skills" is ridiculous. If Napoleon-f.ing-dynomite's got skills, So do you. That's alot of F-ing time if you ask me. if we said that, when we aren't watching re-runs on TV we were doing something healthier or more enriching, that we earned ten "life dollars per hour" engaging in activities such as Outdoor or organized Sports, Going to the Gym, Art, Music, Literature, Academic Studies, Paid-Work; basically any activity that involved us not watching the EXACT same show for the 5th time this year, that means that our province would be 175 million hours X $10 per hour = $1,750,000,000 dollars richer than we are now; over a billion dollars worth of healthy development that we have wasted watching the same bloody episode of god-knows-what sitcom. If you think that these numbers are kind of cool, or you yourself have some interesting thoughts or ideas then you should join the BCFAST mailing list. You wont get spammed and you are free to ask questions at any time. The goal of BCFAST is to promote the Building Of Communities For A Sustainable Tommorow. bbjones User Info... | Couldn't disagree more with most of what you posted. I don't want to "enrich" myself or anyone else with my downtime. I want to do as much of nothing as possible. TV (even re-runs) does that for me. I think your value is off on what people's downtime is worth. I would put it closer to $0.00/hr instead of $10/hr. So 1 bazillion times 0 = $0.00 savings. Watching the same thing more than once doesn't make it worthless. Can a person's time be more productive? Always. But your alternatives are no more valuable than watching a re-run of Seinfeld or the Simpson's (which I would value above some of your suggestions). How many hours have you wasted watching a crappy movie or reading a useless book? What's the difference? If you have cable (like most people) then most of your other alternatives will cost people more money than they already spend. $1 dollar of real money is going to be worth 1,000 times more than your make believe money. How many art exhibits and museums are there anyways? I sure hope you don't suggest going to those things more than once... to see what you've already seen before. How can watching A-Team for the 100th time not be a good thing? Now that I got that out, I will agree that: - most sitcoms/dramas are pointless drivel - people should be paid to sit through reality tv - community focus is a good thing cheers. - Tue, 5 Dec 2006 2:44pm Edited: Tue, 5 Dec 2006 2:48pm
Gman User Info... | "but why not do something enriching" Because the human mind is not set up to be constantly bombarded by novelty. It requires a certain amount of repetition to function correctly. You're just stuck in 'math-think' anyway. Math doesn't have all the answers either, you know. "community focus is a good thing" Tell that to Jim Jones' buddies. - Tue, 5 Dec 2006 2:48pm

trevor corey User Info... | $15 per grammer(same price for everyone), 28.3 grammers per ounce=$424.50 x 16 ounces per pound= $6729 - $2000 original cost = $4,729 profit, all while watching T.P.B. re-runs. Grade ten math, yeah! - Tue, 5 Dec 2006 5:28pm Edited: Tue, 5 Dec 2006 5:54pm

Maybe it’s called living in a free society to waste our time the way we wish ? Meh! "considering that over 2.8 million of us watched HOUSE last week." ___________________________________ ..us who ? And you're saying 2.8 million of us watched HOUSE ? Hehe! Most of us don't even know what the hell that freakin show is or even care ! Where do you get your figures from ? You can’t ever get 30% of the population here to vote in any election,…. but they were happy enough to have themselves polled on a dumbass show called “HOUSE”? Meh ! NO ? Double “Meh” with a cherry on top !!lol! And last but not least , _________________________________________________________ “”””was thinking the other day about how much time Ive spent watching re-runs since i was 12.
