Bourbon blues on the street, loose and complete
Under skies all smokey blue-green
I can't forsake a dixie dead-shake
So we danced the sidewalk clean
My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in?
New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim

Colonel Tom, What's wrong? What's going on?
You can't tie yourself up for a deal
He said, "Hey north you're south shut your big mouth, you gotta do what you feel is real"
Ain't got no picture postcards, ain't got no souvenirs
My baby, she don't know me when I'm thinking bout those years

Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just to stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud that looked a little like me

I had my hands in the river
My feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the lord above
And said, "Hey man thanks"
Sometimes I feel so good, I gotta scream
She said Gordie baby I know exactly what you mean
She said, she said, I swear to god she said...
My memory is muddy what's this river that I'm in?

Jamie Stellini is one of several singersongwriters who i have emailed back and forth from finding her at garageband.com - one year ago I did a review of one of her songs and she and I have emailed a couple of times - she lives in New York and sent me this email today....

http://www.garageband.com/song?%7Cpe1%7CS8LTM0LdsaSkYlSxa2g

Her song is called safe trip... her email reminds me that while we all got our beefs about the Victoria scene there are plenty of tougher places to play music...

In New Orleans...

I met a blues man, a local legend who had taught the guy who had taught some big shot we've all heard of. He believed God had woven a code into the Bible that, when cracked, provided the keys to immortality. He moved ashtrays with his mind and asked me to be his fourth wife. I took piano lessons from him.

I learned how to eat crawfish on the bayou with my crazy friend Monique and her Vietnam Vet uncle. Monique had grown up on the bayou and was fearless and self-destructive. Her uncle kept making jokes about how cute how genitals were when she was a child. I left that day with many Southern stereotypes questioned and faltering and many firmly intact. I emerged with a fierce love for crawfish.

I learned how to drink. Or, more specifically, I learned how to down 16 jack and cokes over the course of an entire night and emerge from a bar at 11am without the help of any stimulant of any kind. I learned that New Orleans is the only place in the world where someone might say to you, "I've had 6 shots of tequila in one hour, but, I've got to drive home because my friend is really fucked up."

I sold a guitar to have an abortion. I was dating a one-legged Australian at the time, with a dazzling smile and body odor of anecdotal proportions. He knew the baby wasn't his and he paid for it anyway. Years later, as a form of atonement, I would go back to New Orleans seeking this sold guitar, hoping to buy back a piece of my lost baby's soul, a piece of mine too. I went straight to the Music Exchange on Louisiana and Magazine and simply said, "I sold a guitar to someone two years ago." Everyone in the store nodded solemnly. They knew what it means to sell a guitar in New Orleans. They helped me look for an hour and when we couldn't find the guitar, the owner of the store hugged me and said, "I hope you find your baby…".

I learned that Emeril Lagasse is an asshole. But, man can that fucker cook.

I learned that most people begging for money on the street in New Orleans are not down on their luck, nor are they lazy or handicapped. They are simply, certifiably, insane. I learned that most people in New Orleans are insane, though not necessarily homeless. There's a special quality to the insanity in New Orleans, though, and I believe this quality can only be called pride.

I learned that two bullets whizzing across the hood of your slow-moving car provides an adrenaline rush that lasts pretty much throughout the day.

I lived and worked at a backpackers hostel on Canal Street near mid-city, meeting all sorts of people from everywhere. I fell in love with a boy who had canoed down the Mississippi river with $100 dollars and two oars. He used his money to buy a guitar at the Music Exchange and then left it at the hostel, as a gift, before he left. He met me in Utah a month later and we drove back down to New Orleans together for Halloween. He left the day before, breaking my heart, and I wore my stripper costume down Bourbon Street, choking back tears and trying to pull the thong out of my ass.

I learned that crackheads steal pennies but not Sebadoh CDs.

I met a drummer, who gave me a brand new electric guitar. Because I needed it. Because he didn't. Because that shit just happens in New Orleans. I named it Lafayette after my friend, a bassist from New York who had died a week before. I had often told him he should come to New Orleans, that he would love it there and that I'd love to show him the city. I guess that was my way of finally doing that.

I learned that people make music because they have to. Because it's the only thing they have or because it's the only thing that makes sense or because it's the only thing that pulls them away from their pain. Or maybe it's the only thing that brings them close to it. Either way, it's the need that makes it special. Nobody understands this better than the people of New Orleans – musicians and listeners alike. And in New Orleans you are one, the other, or both.

* * * *

This is not a eulogy nor is it an advertisement. It is my story of New Orleans. There are untold numbers of stories out there, quietly flashing and humming in the brains of people all over this world. And though different, they would all, I'd be willing to bet, give some insight into a city that has somehow escaped the homogenization of the rest of American culture with an ardent pulse, a soul all its own. They would all bring light to the ugliest and most beautiful parts of human nature as only stories of New Orleans can. My love for New Orleans and its citizens is profound and true, and I think New Orleans needs this love, from all of us. Even if it's just a story. Even if it's just three words.

GET WELL SOON

This is my get well card to New Orleans. Please tack on and send along if you feel the urge…

Love,

Jamie

If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break,
If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break,
When The Levee Breaks I'll have no place to stay.
Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan,
Lord, mean old levee taught me to weep and moan,
Got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home,
Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well.
Don't it make you feel bad
When you're tryin' to find your way home,
You don't know which way to go?
If you're goin' down South
They go no work to do,
If you don't know about Chicago.
Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
Now, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move.
All last night sat on the levee and moaned,
All last night sat on the levee and moaned,
Thinkin' 'bout me baby and my happy home.
Going, go'n' to Chicago,
Go'n' to Chicago,
Sorry but I can't take you.
Going down, going down now, going down. - Fri, 2 Sep 2005 9:40am

What a bunch of phsycos those americans are, they looted every gun shop and every other store for that matter. they are shooting each other. snipers are picking off inocent people. When the tsunami hit tailand i don't remember hearing about the disrespect for others and there own country. Richmond and delta could fall to a flood it's not impossible, but i would like to beleive we as canadians would help each other out, in stead of 'me first' mentality those southern freaks have shown us.

i heard an intersting fact last night on cnn, the levees around new orleans were suspose to be upgraded a couple years back. Bush pulled the funding cause the war in iraq and the 'rebuilding' of iraq has cost the goverment too much. - Fri, 2 Sep 2005 9:41am

Up to Here has to be one of The Hips best... and fuck not playing that song. Prophetic man... but to be honest, New Orleans is built in a swamp below sea level. It had to happen one day.

America is a racist country. Black people are left behind to fend for themselves. White people are sipping Mai-Tais in Houston. Where are the CNN crews staying? Drinking pure water, eating and then going to work reporting about the violence caused by people who have not eaten in 4 days.

I love watching the scientists try to explain why Katrina was so fierce. Its becuase of Global Warming and the Gulf has been a couple degrees warm for a few years now... the reason, all those oil platforms off the coast... but you can't actually say "Global Warming" in W country or blame the only industry outside of gambling (oil) putting money into the stagnant economy... so instead you watch the scientists dance. Its good sport, watch for it next time you're by CNN. - Fri, 2 Sep 2005 12:19pm

The City of New Orleans
by Steve Goodman

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

CHORUS:
Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.

CHORUS

Nighttime on The City of New Orleans,
Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee.
Half way home, we'll be there by morning
Through the Mississippi darkness
Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.

Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.
