Danakil Depression
since circa 2009
Within the Afar Triangle and part of Africa's great Rift Valley is the Danakil Depression. Descending 120 meters below sea level and with temperatures reaching 63 degrees Celsius, this is one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth.
The Depression is a plate tectonic triple junction with a mantle plume, where the spreading ridges of the Earth's crust are slowly being pulled apart. The floor of the Depression is composed mostly of basaltic lava. The Depression has several active volcanoes and an erupting lava lake of fire. This techtonically volatile region has frequent earthquakes.
Earth that was once under the Red Sea is now a layer of salt deposit 5Kms thick. Martian landscapes are created by fields of sulphuric acid ponds and hydrothermal springs growing sulphur, salt, mineral and thermophile bacteria deposits of wildly bright colours and diverse shapes.
The odd and dark diversity that is the Danakil Depression is reflected by the band members and it's music.
