Cowichan Spirit Drummers

The Spirit Drummers came together to drum at the Opening Ceremonies of the Cowichan 2008 North American Indigenous Games. There they joined with drummers from many Nations throughout BC and the Pacific Northwest, a part of the 1,000 drummers gathered to welcome the athletes to the Cowichan. For the first time, the songs of the Cowichan people were taught to an intercultural group of drummers, as well as First Nation relations. It was an honour that was not taken lightly.

The Cowichan Spirit Drummers are a reflection of the people that live in the Cowichan region. Long after the last athlete left the Valley and the Games officially moved on to their next location, the sounds of the drummers can still be heard in the Valley. This unique intercultural group continues to gather and drum together each week and perform at public functions. Everyone is welcome. Their songs are now a reflection of the ideals and goals they embody as a group; sharing, caring, working and playing together; Nut sa' mat squalawun -- one heart, one mind.
