David 'Fathead' Newman & The Tilden Webb TrioTenor player David 'Fathead' Newman comes from a long line of great Texas saxophonists that includes Booker Ervin, Ornette Coleman, Arnett Cobb, and King Curtis. The Texas sound is characterized by its deeply soulful blues sound. Newman is best known for his 12-year stint (1954–1966) with the late great Ray Charles with whom his big, earthy improvisations became a trademark. Over the years, David has released over 35 albums on labels like Atlantic, Prestige, and Kokopelli while working with artists as diverse as Herbie Mann, Stanley Turrentine, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Jimmy McGriff, Hank Crawford, Eric Clapton, and Queen Latifah. He also appeared in the Robert Altman film Kansas City. In 2005 the saxophonist’s recording I Remember Brother Ray (High Note) became the number one most played jazz album in the U.S. Newman is joined during this special performance by the Tilden Webb Trio, a Vancouver-based group he recorded with on the CD Cellar Groove (Cellar Live). Pianist Tilden Webb is one of the most prolific musicians in the country. He’s worked with everyone from Ray Brown and Maria Schneider to Phil Dwyer and Terry Clarke.
