The fifteenth annual year, Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival returns to Deer Lake Park for another family-friendly day filled with amazing music. This year’s lineup includes some familiar faces and first timers: Big Sugar, Matt Andersen and the MelloTones, Bettye LaVette, Imelda May, The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, Wide Mouth Mason, Shakey Graves, Blind Boy Paxton, Steve Kozak, Chic Gamine, Rich Hope and His Evil Doers, and Miss Quincy.

Big Sugar
BIG SUGAR churn out their unique blend of roots-rock-reggae, soul and dub with double neck guitars and dreadlocks flying through the air. Gordie Johnson and his Rasta brethren are well known for their thundering live performances spiced with epic dub excursions that keep crowds grooving. Big Sugar’s style has even inspired many other notable artists, including THE BLACK CROWES and GOV’T MULE. A platinum recording career that spans over 20 years includes their latest releases Revolution Per Minute, concert dvd Eliminate Ya! Live and a recent collaboration with Reggae legend Willi Williams on Bust No Guns. The Edison Award winners are looking forward to returning to Europe Spring 2014 for a live concert tour.

Matt Andersen and the MelloTones
Matt Andersen’s narrative-driven writing cuts through the soul, blending blues and folk, encompassed in total honesty. He takes listeners on a ride with his diverse musical styles, skilled guitar work and over-the-top showmanship. Matt’s intimate, high-energy performances have captivated audiences across the world, from Canada, to the US, to Australia and the UK, from small clubs to festivals.

Bettye LaVette
Born Betty Jo Haskins, Bettye LaVette did not get her start in the church like many of her contemporaries, but in her living room, that was oft-times visited by The Soul Stirrers, The Blind Boys of Mississippi, and many other traveling gospel groups of the day. By 16, Betty Jo had become enamored with showbiz. She decided to change her name to something more dramatic. Betty's first single was "My Man - He’s a Loving Man.", in the fall of 1962. The record charted #7 R&B and put her on her first national tour, with Ben E. King, Clyde McPhatter, and another newcomer, Otis Redding. After a brief spell at Detroit's Lupine label, Betty went back to New York and became the featured singer in the Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford Review. Her association with Don and Dee Dee spawned her next big record, for the Calla label. "Let Me Down Easy". Bettye's pleading voice, set against the moody string arrangement by Dale Warren produced a record that is on many "greatest soul songs of all time" lists. It went # 20 R&B in 1965 and led to an appearance on the television show, Shindig. It also put her on a tour with The James Brown Review.

Imelda May
The rise and rise of Imelda May has been unstoppable since the release of her 2010 album, “Mayhem”, and with anticipated release of “Tribal” this June, it will only get higher. Imelda began singing in clubs when she was 16 years old and had the honour of being occasionally barred from her own shows at Dublin’s Bruxelles club for being underage. “I was getting tips from the best musicians in Dublin. One of them said, ‘Your voice is great, but it needs to roughen.” It was around this time, when driving a tearful Imelda to a gig, that her father asked her “Is your heart broken? Excellent. Now you can sing the blues”. Remembered by Imelda as a turning point in her life, from then on her voice developed into the sultry, rich and unique tone you hear today.

The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer
The Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer stir up a lot more than just violent nautical imagery. Armed with a sack of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion and a road-‐worn Telecaster, Shawn “The Harpoonist” Hall and Matthew “The Axe Murderer” Rogers kick out raw and primal blues; continuing in the tradition of a ‘decades-‐deep blues style’ (Scott Brown, What’s up Yukon), while electrifying the genre a with a lightning bolt of new life. Their sound pays homage to influences ranging from Robert Johnson to Jack White, but it’s smothered in greasy, gritty soul, and punched with funk.

Wide Mouth Mason
Wide Mouth Mason is a soul power trio comprised of Shaun Verreault (lead vocals/guitar), Safwan Javed (vocals/drums) and Gordie Johnson (vocals/bass). Wide Mouth Mason’s unique approach to jamming has earned them two invitations to the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland (which resulted in the acclaimed 2009 DVD/CD release “Live! Montreux, Switzerland”) and tours with AC/DC, ZZ Top and The Rolling Stones. They became one of the first North American rock bands to tour China in the 21st century. Previous albums have yielded such hit singles as “Midnight Rain”, “My Old Self”, “Why”, “Smile” and “Change”.

Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival acknowledges its many sponsors and partners including Chevron, Tourism Burnaby, Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre, Global BC, Georgia Straight, Burnaby Now, UniverCity, and ABC Recycling.
