Event Description

Mezzrow's Productions is presenting a major blues event this Thursday, Oct. 16th at the DaVinci Centre (195 Bay St.). The show is called "The Real Folk Blues Sessions," and features three true blues giants in one evening: Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne, Lurrie Bell and Paul Oscher. Tickets $35 ($25 to Blues Society/Jazz Society members), $40 at the door; available at Lyle's Place, Island Audio and Ditch Records. For more info: 250-727-1269.

In tribute to American music of the past and present, Mezzrow's Productions presents the Real Folk Blues Sessions, featuring KENNY "BLUES BOSS" WAYNE (piano), LURRIE BELL (guitar) and PAUL OSCHER (harmonica, piano, guitar). Each an established and exciting performer in his own right, these three blues luminaries unite to pay respect to their heroes, the true purveyors of the real folk blues (such as Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Memphis Slim). They come together in the spirit of the deep blues, tempered with a contemporary edge. With both acoustic and electric presentations, the group will explore their roots, while presenting a look into the future of the blues and breaking some new ground along the way. Each of these virtuoso players brings a healthy personal history of the music to this project.

Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne is a pianist born in Spokane, raised in San Francisco, and currently based in Vancouver, BC. Lots of traditional blues and boogie-woogie with a taste of Kansas City swing and New Orleans rhythm best describe Kenny's music. He has been compared to Fats Domino and Big Joe Turner. Kenny Wayne's musical roots are firmly planted in New Orleans jazz and blues; even though he was born up north, he definitely acquired his musical feel from his Louisiana parents. He developed a true West Coast feel over many years in the jazz, R&B and blues scenes of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Aside from being a featured headliner, he has backed artists ranging from Charles Mingus, Jimmy Reed, Sonny Rhodes, Joe Louis Walker and blues-rocker Jeff Healey.

Guitar player Lurrie Bell has taken the influences of Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Eddie Taylor, Big Walter Horton, Lovie Lee and Jimmy Dawkins, because these are the musicians he literally grew up around in his home in Chicago, since his father, the blues harmonicist Carey Bell, worked for Muddy Waters. At a time when most other young blues guitarists, both black and white, were favoring the rock-blues "guitar hero" style made popular by the likes of Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lurrie's playing has always followed more in the traditional style of such blues greats as B.B. King, Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Eddie Taylor. For Lurrie, it has never been about how many notes he could play or how fast he could play them. Rather, it's always been about the music, and more specifically, about the blues. Above all, whatever style or flavor Lurrie chooses to draw from, it is his own sound that rules.

Paul Oscher, a blues singer, songwriter, recording artist and multi-instrumentalist (harmonica, guitar, piano, melodica and bass harp), first came to national attention as Muddy Waters’ harmonica player from 1967 to 1972. Oscher has backed up major blues artists such as John Lee Hooker, Earl Hooker, Son House, Fred McDowell, Lightning Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Albert King, Magic Sam and Big Mama Thornton. Paul recorded a number of records with Muddy Waters for the legendary Chess Records label in Chicago. These recordings and live performances would influence an entire generation of young players. Paul remained in Muddy’s band till the end of 1971 when he left to form his own band using the name Brooklyn Slim. Oscher’s current album, "Down In The Delta," was recognized as Acoustic Blues Album of the Year in the 2006 Blues Music Awards.

If you love the blues with a traditional tinge, this is a show you cannot miss!
