Discover Vancouver Island Through Photography
Explore the coast and temperate rainforest on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and learn about its unique ecosystems and incredible diversity of wildlife. At the end of winter, the herring spawn attracts many species on the coast such as orcas, sea lions, seals, river otters, minks, bald eagles and many other birds. Spring is a time of migration for thousands of birds and mammals. In summer, wildlife is busy caring for their offspring and protecting their territory. At the end of summer, the return of salmon to their native streams means a feast for bears that must fatten up for winter. In the fall, herds of Roosevelt elk begin to gather in anticipation of the mating season. Meanwhile deciduous trees in the lush forests turn yellow, orange and red. With the arrival of winter, the coast experiences spectacular storms.
