Event Description

We drift into a third covidean winter of saturated fog broken by snowstorms and a tsunami advisory.

To rupture the ennui, artists Jeremy Borsos and Lance Olsen join with curator Sue Donaldson for the temporary exhibition project LOST FOUNDRY/FUKUSHIMA RISING. The exhibition opens at noon Friday February 4 at 655 Tyee Road in Victoria and runs through Sunday March 6, 2022. Public hours are noon to 5 pm Friday-Sunday. Access is free.
This collaborative project in a Vic West fitness gym that shut down in 2019 features Lance Olsen’s Fukushima Rising site-specific sound composition and suite of acrylic and oil pastel paintings in conjunction with the watery diorama of Jeremy Borsos’ massive Lost Foundry installation.
In Lost Foundry Borsos offers a 38-foot reconstructed portion of the Victoria Foundries Ltd. building façade, through which gallery goers view the diorama. Acquired by the artist in 1996 when the building was demolished, the red foundry walls with their white IRON BRASS ALUMINIUM CASTING lettering look out onto Victoria’s Upper Harbour through floor-to-ceiling glass.
JEREMY BORSOS works and lives on Mayne Island out of a 2500 sq.ft. studio and house built from recuperated materials, mostly historic buildings. The Lost Foundry façade has lived under his house in numbered, documented piles since he brought it to Mayne Island almost 30 years ago. The diorama component of Lost Foundry is number three in an ongoing exploration; the previous one was featured in Jeremy & Sus Borsos’ 2018 Blue Cabin exhibition at grunt gallery in Vancouver.
LANCE AUSTIN OLSEN is a painter and sound composer in Victoria. His work focuses on the dialogue between his abstract paintings, and his parallel work in experimental audio composition. The physicality of his large-scale paintings, often incorporating collaged and repurposed pieces of earlier work, is echoed in his sound compositions, where found pieces of magnetic tape, and conventional objects from the painting studio, are appropriated as sound sources. He and sound artist Jamie Drouin co-founded Infrequency Editions in 2001 as a conduit for publishing their collaborative works in audio, and Olsen’s graphic notation scores.
SUE DONALDSON is a curator and writer in Victoria who works with print culture, visual and media arts. The current collaboration marks a return to her own practice after 15 years at the BC Arts Council. She is delighted.
