This was the beginning of Sepultura's era of metal genius. The follow-up, 'Beneath the Remains' is what I beleive to be their greatest work. 'Arise' fuckin shredded and then came 'Chaos AD'. A decent album but a mere shadow of former glory. From then on, Andreas Kisser just decided to quit doing guitar solos and the band must have said, "Fuck it, let's just write a bunch of really simple riffs and string em together!" - Thu, 25 Dec 2003 6:30pm

sounds good to me. simple is as simple does son, nobody wants to hear complicated nonsense anymore. thank jesus christ our saviour for that too....hehe. I think ROOTS is still one of the best albums ever recorded by anyone. Ever. - Thu, 25 Dec 2003 10:18pm

Roots was alright but compared to their earlier work it is brutally boring. There's nothing I hate more than when a killer guitarist decides to quit playing great solos. What the fuck prompts that sort of decision? Did Andreas just look at his guitar and go, 'I tell ya, them emotion-provoking, epic, brilliant solos I've been doing just aren't worth my time. I'm gonna jack off instead and then just palm-mute my open e-string a bunch of times!" I dunno, I just don't get it. - Fri, 26 Dec 2003 1:07pm

Dude, epic emotion-provoking solos are what metal is all about. If there's no soloing, I generally don't care for the band. And the longer the solo, the better... but hey, I'm a guitarist so I'm sort of biased that way. - Sat, 27 Dec 2003 2:51pm

only guitar players give a shit about solos
no one else gives a fuck, and most people would prefer if there wasn't a solo on every song

not to dis sepultura, they're sweet, but if they hadnt changed style with roots, they'd sound very dated, like their old shit
like ross said: welcome to the 1980's - Sun, 28 Dec 2003 3:49pm

European metal is still full of solos. A lot of it is totally 80s style, I definitely agree with that. But fuck, all I listen to nowadays is cheesy power metal so go figure. I can't get enough of the 80s metal so I'm quite glad that there's bands keeping up that sort of thing now and expanding upon it. - Sun, 28 Dec 2003 5:42pm
