Nik Olaz, the changes your dad has gone through don't surprise me. Some of the angriest people I knew back in the late sixties were hippies. Or at least they had the long hair and clothing to suit the image. It was easy to look like a hippie but really being one was almost impossible. It was too idealistic and divorced from reality. It was easy to blame all your problems on "the Man" or the "Pigs" or even the "Establishment" without having to look inward to where the real problem might be. If you lay the blame for all the things that are wrong in your life on people or institutions you have to keep on finding new ones. When nothing changes for the better in your life the bitterness sets in and you can't stop blaming other people. It's just too hard to accept it may be your own fault. - Fri, 28 Nov 2003 5:16am

Ah yes, Patchouli oil! Some friends of mine had a candle factory in their basement back in the day. Of all the scents they used Patchouli was the one that took over. It permeated their whole house. They were so saturated it leaked out their pores. Even the cats reeked. Other cats wouldn't play with them and it was impossible for them to sneak up on the mice it was their duty to catch. I felt bad for those cats.
But then that shaved headed guy with the piercings and short pants who gave me a hug after we played at Steamers the last time, smelled like flowers. - Fri, 28 Nov 2003 2:44pm

Oh god Nik, don't start telling troutbreath he's right. He's already really difficult to live with and he's such a HIPPY!
I must add my 2 cents though.

It seems hippies were an important element to instigate debate and change in the 60's and 70's. They were a passionate bunch but once change was in motion, alot of that passion turned to more general negativity and has left the voice of the "hippy" as something much less powerful than when it began .
I see each generation finding passion to speak and act for justice, it just manifests itself differently. If you look at some of the voices that are speaking out today you will see similarities to the hippy movement as they become part of our culture. We need extreme dialogue in the pendulum of politics to help find the mediating truths. Hippies are still among us they are just using different mediums to bring their message home.
Okay maybe that was 3 cents! - Sat, 29 Nov 2003 10:55am

Weren't the true movers+ shakers of the 60's in fact the "Yippies?" That would be of Jerry Rubin/"Do it" fame.
My only beef with the few happy enough to clothe themselves in the "hippe" uniform and mindset is that "it's all good..." ethic. Many have turned out to be sleazy opportunists taking full advantage of what ever comes up. Don't trust 'em as a result.
Ironically, many so called "hippies" more often than not tend to be rather uptight arrogant fascists (rasta, etc.) I 'spose thye "peace and harmony" credo helps them to balance this out. I dunno...my parents were redneck-hippies; the most disturbing of them all. - Sun, 30 Nov 2003 1:36am

Funny how people hate patchouli these days. When I was a sweet young thang (long, long ago), I used to wear it. All the boys loved it...said it drove them crazy (in a good way)!!!

These days I've even had enough of it. People douse themselves in it until it's nauseating. *Remember kids...all things in moderation*

Oh yeah hippies??? I love em! What's not to love? - Sun, 30 Nov 2003 3:41pm

The YIPPIES (Youth International Party) were certainly much more politically effective. I always saw the Hippies as more of a social movement. A lifestyle that, it was hoped, would have repercussions on the way we existed on this poor old planet. The "Whole Earth Catalogue" is perhaps the best document to chronicle these lifestyle choices. There were quite a number of hippie first time carpenters that attempted to build a geodesic dome from plans available through the catalogue. I guess they thought that if getting something square was too hard a dome would be easier? As a result there is a legacy of leaking domes quietly mouldering away on places like Cortes Island. As a social movement hippiedom left some things to be desired. The young kids that showed up in Vancouver and San Francisco were certainly exploited by opportunistic types. Perhaps a more positive legacy were the "Diggers" who tried to provide for the street youth which evolved into such places as "Cool-aid" - Mon, 1 Dec 2003 5:22am

Hippies, Yippies???
I remember crusing up Hwy 101 in Cali as a little kid in 68-69. Sitting in the back seat of my dads sweet little mustang, I saw a seemingly never ending stream of "hippies" making their way to the mecca of the Hait in San Francisco. My old man was not a hippie, and more than likely bitch slapped a few flower children when he was out drinking with his buddies. Seems to me that by the time the concept of the "hippie" lyfestyle made it's way into the general public, the movement was over, and the carpetbaggers had moved in. Having spent a lot of time in San Francisco over the years I can tell you that the Hait- Ashbury section of town is not the love filled "free zone" that it is advertised to be. But rather a dangerous and for the most part seedy place that it is easy to get ripped off in with over inflated prices and a heavy collection of street preditors waiting around to take advantage of happy-go-lucky hippie type tourista....Happily for me, punk was born around the time my teenage rage was kindled and other than good weed,LSD, and the occasional hippie chick, I'm not un- happy that I missed it.....
Nice idea though..

There's a big difference between actually Living the life of a hippie and appropriating the costume and ethos of the day. Most of the latter turned into yuppies.Have ye not been studying yer history? How can you expect to get yer pudding! if ye haven't studied yer history! - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 6:25pm

I find that a lot of people who hate hippies actually share a lot of the same ideals. ie: D.I.Y., what goes around comes around (karma), fight for what you believe in etc. Hippy got turned into a fashion and was capitalized on just like punk and grunge and every other scene has been taken out of context and marketed. I have seen plenty of hippies gone yuppie or conservative but i wonder how hippy they really were; really fighting for a cause or just wearing tie-dyeds and smoking a lot of pot.

Overall i think it is in human nature to subdivide our own and catagorize them into sections. It makes us feel like we know where we belong. Personally i think that's bullshit. - Wed, 10 Dec 2003 11:41am

fuck that doing that rules. how else would we know who to be biggoted towards, or who to thrash on when we're pissed. i LIKE feeling morally superior to everyone i choose to surround myself with. without hanging around losers every day, i wouldn't be able to think i'm above everyone and everything. my opinion only is right and you are a mindless turd who speaks rubbish. i know what's best for the world and you are a sucker who believes that you actually know what's right, when in fact it is me and me only. - Wed, 10 Dec 2003 1:33pm

My problem with hippies is best summed up in this story:

Some friends (hippies) of mine were playing a show on "Buy Nothing Day", and were passing word around about coming, because everything was free. There'd be free food, free cover, free prizes. Oh, except the beer costs money. Now, where are the hippies' fucking principles when it comes to getting drunk? Fuck off. - Thu, 18 Dec 2003 5:02pm
