Not a BC show, but I assume there was a buzz about this show in Victoria either way....

US black metal legends Absu made their first appearance in Seattle so I had to go down to check this show out.

When I arrived Candlelight labelmates Sothis were getting started playing a Dimmu Borgir/Cradle of Filth bastardization of black metal that I really did not enjoy at all. All triggered drums and gothy keyboards. Next up were Rumpelstiltskin Grinder playing a thrash/hardcore crossover mix which wasn't much better. Considering Destroyer 666 were supposed to be co-headlining this show, I wasn't too impressed with the meager replacements.

Of course no one was there for those bands! ABSU! I had been waiting bloody years to see this damn band, and the wait was well worth it. Basically all the albums were fairly well represented in the set, which was something like this:

1. Descent To Acheron
2. Nightfire Canonization
3. The Thrice Is Greatest To Ninnigal
4. 13 Globes
5. Amy
6. Magick Square Cipher
7. Swords And Leather
8. Manannan
9. Four Crossed Wands
10. Apzu
11. Girra's Temple
12. Highland Tyrant Attack
13. The Coming Of War

Of course there were lots of cool intros before many of the songs (eg. "An Involution of Thorns" at the beginning), and Proscriptor donned the headset mic (AKA Madonna mic) to introduce the songs and sing about half of the set. Despite, Equitant & Shaftiel's absence, the new version of Absu I found to be excellent musicians and all the songs were nailed with total professionalism. A little strange that there were only about 80ish people there, probably due to it being a Wednesday night. Didn't recognize many familiar faces from Vic/Van.

Wished I could have gone, didn't have my passport in order and not enough free time to make it to the Calgary show. Looks like a great set list... thanks for posting. - Fri, 3 Jul 2009 6:27pm
