local music nerds may be interested to know, this MPA line-up features the bone-crunching rhythmic team of John London & Kev Smith (Neos), both formerly of Jerk Ward, Sludge Confrontations, and Mission of Christ reunited on their first focused collaboration since 1988!...not to mention 'ol James and I are there as well!

similarly, Bronze features Nick from Crown the Wolf...and Rotterdam stars a solid line-up of dudes from Meatlocker Seven, Run Like Hell, and many more!

Anyhow, MPA will be tracking about 70 minutes of material in late 2009 / early 2010.

Zak has given his notice as Rotterdam's "bass player". He feels he has outgrown the band and is looking to pursuing his solo career.
This may be his last show with us. It may not. Depends on who takes his spot and how quickly they become awesome at it.

I await to see the sound of the new MPA. MPA has a group of men who have been playing victoria underground since most of you where water in the Sooke reservoir. I think this will be one heavy show. If your a drummer your gonna want to check out MPA's new drummer. In the mid/late eighties i think this drummer could not be beat. It should prove worth the entry fee.

If you are a fan of heavy driving rock this will be a show not to miss. Bronze.... alls i can say is holy shit! Can't wait to feel thier sound.

Years ago i stood on the dancefloor at Harpos with the late Chris Buck, watching a band. The band that came on the stage was not on the bill. They were the MELVINS. It was one of the heaviest moments of my life.... next to seeing John Lee Hooker in the same bar, and Tony Iommi in Heaven and Hell. Needless to say the MELVINS have never returned to Victoria so all the islanders i told to see this band might not have had that experience. It was heavy.... i fully anticipate this MPA/BRONZE show will be of a similar experience. - Wed, 17 Jun 2009 6:37pm

I chose the Hip {stares at feet}.
I will get another chance to witness the awesomeness that is Rotterdam again soon enough though. I heard all about how amazing your set was from everyone.

Bronze just simply blew my mind.

In another thread Mr Hell made a "joke" about how people should get out to see his band because you never know if you'll get hit by a bus. After battling a lifetime of health issues, I live by that philosophy. I never got to see Bronze because at the time they were together, I was not strong enough to go out. Tonight's re-union represented a second chance for me. It is so good to be alive. So good.

MPA had huge sound tonight. I actually had to move back from the stage because the bass and drums were vibrating my chest too much. Great show.

Nice to finally meet you Ricky Jak. - Sat, 20 Jun 2009 2:50am Edited: Sat, 20 Jun 2009 2:51am

I'd like to add that Victoria really surprised me last night. Sounds like all three show did well factoring in the Tragically Hip show and all. Imagine if all the people who came out to Lucky, V-Lounge and Sugar last night would come out even on a part time basis to support local bands? That would make for a stronger base here in Victoria.

Rotterdam's burly metal had an awesome sound, though I wonder what happened to that super fat chunky bass sound that disappeared after a song or two, too bad!

Bronze had some very inspired riffs and good atmosphere, but a bit too "stoner" (never liked that term in music) for my taste. Great solo work though!

Like the other bands, MPA had a pretty much spotless sound, which is quite impressive for Lucky Bar. Finally a Lucky show that was totally enjoyable.

Biggest surprise of the night was hearing Hellhammer over the speakers while munching on greasy pizza at The Joint. That'll teach the hipsters. Things are looking up! - Wed, 24 Jun 2009 1:33am

The whole evening was some heavy. There has been some retro type metal lurking around this town.... i must start from the begginning. Basically the first Black Sabbath albums are no doubt my favorite pieces of vinyl in my house. I only wish i wasn't only 5 years old when this band started playing shows. that would have been a time to experience. But still the stages across the world have taken fire with the influences of those first heavy Sabbath riffs.

Enter Victoria Lucky bar June 19...

Rotterdam, the logging industry is dead here on this island. The men who used to fall trees, drive logging trucks are not working... so now enter the men who should be falling trees and driving huge trucks. These men are ROTTERDAM. That's what this band felt like to me. If you are into "BURLY METAL" yes Mr. Hell said it right! Rotterdamb aren't noisey like Spreadeagle, or Bison... ROTTERDAM are a band that you can stomp your foot to. Do i like this band.... HELL YEAH!

Stoner calling all Stoners.... BRONZE, This band definatly had the biggest dancefloor crowd! The streets out in the Western Communnities were a little safer because a good lot of folks from that area were on the Bronze dancefloor. Pulsing vibrations.... Every town needs a band that's like this, and i think BRONZE do it very well! I am living proof that you don't need to be stoned to enjoy this band... but if you are a stoner (and able to get your lazy hippy wannabe ass off the couch) this band might be pretty good for you too. FEEL THIS BAND.

MPA.... Mexican Power Authority. The new MPA, with all new songs, all new sound. Were the people ready? Maybe not totally. My feeling is it was late, and the crowd would need to concentrate to get this new sound. I heard the sound of a retro 70's metal. MPA have always had quick tempo changes, one of their songs could easily be broken down into two or three heavy songs... thats what MPA are. My personal opinion is you might not be able to get MPA on the first sitting. You might have to do some research to understand the amazing construction of the songs. Was it HEAVY... hell yes. You're not gonna get your basic three cord teenage angst music with this new MPA, NO. MPA are playing their instruments. Go the the MPA myspace and watch the video of a song from the show, listen and tell me what you think. I think its "FUCKIN AWSOME"

love -ricky JaK
