Has anyone ever played there? Hundred bands or so have probably in that past 2 years. They are in fear of closing due to lack of funds. Everyone there is a volunteer, they deserve our support. Come on everyone lets band together and not loose another place to play music in this city. Go in there with some donations, or volunteer with them. Put on a show there and give them some of the door.

We are also doing a benefit concert each month to keep them going. Come out and help us SAVE CAMAS - Thu, 2 Apr 2009 5:55pm Edited: Thu, 2 Apr 2009 5:55pm

I don't get it, how can Camas bookstore be going under? Did the owner go on a multiple binge and spent all the profit? - Tue, 28 Apr 2009 8:57pm

If the live shows are going under it's because the city is imposing their nasty live music wrecking bylaws. Funk - V is searching for good reasons to stick around Victoria but the incentives certainly seem to be dwindling. Granted there are still a few cool places to play 19 + but all ages shows.. but unless you already have enough of a following to fill Element.. forget about all ages gigs. This is just one more nail in the coffin, and it's sad to see. If any one has something better to share.. some good news that I haven't heard yet I'm all ears. - Wed, 29 Apr 2009 4:37pm

"I don't get it, how can Camas bookstore be going under"

well mixed with a tough economy and people with deep pockets and aligator arms... makes for a small business like a bookstore VERY hard to compete. Also with rent cost/building cost on the up&up; makes for an even harder business to run, especially a specialized bookstore or any specialty shop for that matter.

and for the record there are MANY more places to host an all ages show... but again, most people do not think of the cost(s) involved with running a show/venue.(ps, a venue doesn't HAVE to be in the downtown core either). - Wed, 29 Apr 2009 5:19pm

the NEW owner of the roxy theatre reported camas to the bilaws officer, it has slated may 15th as the end date of all live music happening there.

bummer.

boycott the roxy. the owner is a greedy developer who gives nothing to the community and treats his employees and longtime customers like dirt.

i sure would love to see that guy get his. feel free to vandalize his business if you are more of a punk than me. PS his name is MIKE SHARPE - Mon, 4 May 2009 8:51pm

My question would be...how does Camas having shows effect the Roxy and their business AT ALL! the only thing it does is bring more people and LIFE into the neighborhood...and that can't be a bad thing for business. This town continues to dissapoint me. The city of Victoria continuously caters to douchebag business men, and destroys anything vibrant or unique that's happening in this city. It's very frustrating. - Mon, 4 May 2009 10:43pm Edited: Mon, 4 May 2009 10:44pm

The ROXY just bought a full PA system and is planning on having shows in the near future. And it is my understanding that the brickyard stopped doing shows because of a liquor license issue and not because of the odeon next door. Pierre at the odeon is a pretty chill guy - Tue, 5 May 2009 3:48am

They won't be booking any worthwhile shows at The Roxy. It will all have to be "events". On a weekend, they'd have to make $500+ for the room before they paid the band, just to make it worth cancelling a movie. And that's if they start shows after 9PM. Plus, like you said...it's a sit-down venue. Book punk or metal, and seats get broken, etc. - Tue, 5 May 2009 3:54pm

How is a benefit show going to help Camas though? Obviously it's a good initiative, but all it could do is help them get through another month, before they're faced with the same financial problems again. - Wed, 6 May 2009 11:01am

"They won't be booking any worthwhile shows at The Roxy. It will all have to be "events""

is this FIRST HAND info? or just an assumption? It would be terrible for a venue, who's simply trying to expand the music scene, to have some idiot(not saying directly that YOU, poster, are an idiot) touting negative feedback to a venue they a)have never played in b)never booked or organized a show at said venue.

it could be like me saying that Camas Books has never booked any worthwhile shows for me to attend. And all they do is cater to a crowd that wants everything for nothing... but is that the case? - Wed, 6 May 2009 2:01pm

second story is long gone. i think it was due to high rent costs? it was a super chill coffee shop/book store downtown that held all ages shows and it was in the space above (i think) flavour.
but anyways, i poked around a bit online but couldn't really find what i wanted to know about business licenses. is it unrealistic for camas to obtain the necessary licensing to host all ages shows? are the workshops still happening? i suppose i should just go down there and talk to comrade myself. - Wed, 6 May 2009 6:56pm

Hey I am the guy that organized the benefit show. At the time we organized the show Camas had just lost a financial backer, but was still able to have music, they had no idead that there music was going to get shut down at all. We were doing it to help with Cash Flow. . Our event went well btw and we reised a few hundred bucks for Camaas (Thanks to the music going community) We did plan to do thme once a month, to try and keep Camas around specifically becuase it was a place that my band, and lots of others we know have played.

No joke, 1 week after our show, the Bylaw rolls by and drops this bomb. In a way I feel bad all of a sudden becuase I wonder to myself . . . By publicizing the fact that people care about Camas, and that it is in fear of going under, did we wake the beast who then saw an opportunity to come drive a nail in the coffin, while the bookstore was already down. . .

All in all a sad situation. Orange Hall is where we held the benefit show because it holds more people that Camas. It only costs 20 per hour to book, and the Woman Muchelle who runs it was awesom with us. We played loud hip hop, and live Reggae Ska for 3 hours and no one complained a peep. We were done by 11:00 and we are playing there again on the 16th of May. I would recomend Orange Hall as a good venue. Got to pick up your own sound setup from LM Though for the night. All in all still worth it. Sound and the space could be yours fro about 100. It not hard to make that back on a 5 dollar show, and the sound in there is great.

Shhhh Please dont tell the city there is somewhere to have music, next they will be sending arsonists to burn down the places that do have permits. . .

Hey there,

I'm a member of the Camas Collective, which runs the bookstore. Actually we run a community space, and book sales are one of the ways we pay the rent, utilities, and insurance.
We are all volunteers, and Camas is a non-profit society with the goal of providing accessible community space for community organizing, activism and art. We sell books and host music events as a way to subsidize the space for grassroots community groups that would otherwise not have a space to gather.
We want to thank the local music community for helping us provide this space.
Yes, after this fundraiser we will need more fundraisers. That's the name of the non-profit game.
So we're always looking for bands willing to play a set at a fundraiser.
For more info about Camas visit http://camas.ca
Thanks again - Fri, 15 May 2009 1:23pm

I don't know if any of us had heard yet that the Roxy owner was the person who called the city. The bylaw department has told us they had received 3 complaints in the course of a year and a half from business owners, but would not say from who.
We're committed to being part of our local neighbourhood here, and we'd rather approach our neighbours and learn how to resolve our issues (if we can) without having to resort to calling the bylaw department or vandalizing property.
We plan to assess the impact we have been having on the neighbourhood in a respectful way and do not intend to antagonize anything right now. - Fri, 15 May 2009 1:40pm Edited: Fri, 15 May 2009 1:43pm
