Review: Citizen Fish - Thirst (Lookout Records)
---
While I was doing some data entry work this morning, I decided to take a listen to this CD, and wow, was I ever impressed. Not familiar with who Citizen Fish is? For a decade Citizen Fish has been touring the world: turning gatherings, benefits, and social gigs into an international never-ending weekend. These four dudes from the UK, Dick (vocals, motormouth, idealist, one set of clothes for each tour), Phil (guitar, facial hair, soccer, model for BEAR magazine), Jasper (bass, sweaters, cigarettes, ladies man) and Trotsky (drums, one time proprietor of a worm farm, possibly the only member of the band who can drive a van or bench his weight) have created a blend of punk, ska, and straight up rock'n'roll that appeals to the sing-a-long music fans and even the "muso" musician types that typically dismiss punks as not being able to play their instruments. But it's not so much the fact that these dudes are the most talented musicians in England, it's what they say and how they say it. In a fun loving, all inclusive way, Citizen Fish (and their previous outfits Culture Shock and the legendary Subhumans) have brought working class radical politics to generations of questioning minds.

The lyrics are intelligent, and take a honest view on what the youth in middle-class Britain deal with. The guitar is sharp and really pulls you into the songs. I've always gotten a kick out of Dick ever since I fell in love with SubHumAns-From the Cradle to the Grave (I'm a huge mark for the guitar sound they used in it, and it's one of my alltime favorite punk albums, other then Never Mind the Bullocks, and Circle Jerks-Wild in the Streets/Group Sex). My favorite tracks on this CD include: Popsongs, Plasticash and Catholic Sex Confession. If you can find this CD, definately worth picking up!!! - Fri, 27 Jun 2003 8:59pm

I was hunting down CDs today, A&B have every Citizen Fish album but they want $21.50 per (that's before tax). Tempting to buy Thirst, cept I bought DOA-Hardcore 81 fer $20 (go figure, methinks Joey is getting back at the bootlegging of this album on the net :). Seems strange, first punk album I bought from Lyle's 20 years ago was Hardcore 81, and here's me buying it from him on CD 20 years later, rocks BTW! - Sat, 5 Jul 2003 4:17am
