Bong head! What a great night!
All three acts were amazing!
About 200 people came out to see Bong despite the two other great shows that night.
Shakey T got everyone hopping and then Greenlaw Ave from Toronto was really cool & groovy & had the crowd dancing.
Then King Bong took the stage and blew me away! A very soild hour and a half! One great tune after another.
They had the crowd roaring and I have never seen that many people dancing at Steamers before, also there were so many women, shit man I swear it was three to one chicks!
A really great night, three great acts, and I am totaly a fan of King Bong now! I can't wait for their full length CD to be out!
Thanks Bong! - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 11:51am
Pothead I was there and it was fucking RAD man!
King Bong Rules!!!! - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 12:26pm
georgey I never thought King Bong was all that great, they do have a few good tunes but they really lack stage presence. I saw them at steamers once and I really was expecting more from what I had heard of them, they were just standing around when they played, no energy at all. I didn't mind the weed they tossed into the crowd afterwards though, thanks guys - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 12:54pm
Bong Fan Hey idiot, they have ten pieces in their band ..ever seen the stage at Steamers? And If you think that KB has no energy your a fucking loser..that band is like a wave of energy! Just ask any of the 200 people that came out to that show last Friday night, or perhaps you should ask Big D and Kids Table from Boston who asked them to open for them on their next west coast tour! Or the kiltlifters who have requested that they submit two songs for an upcoming compilation CD, to be sold at Ska fest, despite the fact that Dane freezes them out of Ska Fest for shitty bands like the Hootchies!
You can say a lot of things about King Bong but, no energy is not one of them..hey are you the loser that always shits on them?..I heard about you..look guy it is obvious to anyone who has ACTUALLY SEEN this band that they are at the very least a great show BECAUSE of their energy..you should be careful of critisism that is obviously made up without any real experience..it shows loser!
Get a life..

Musicfan I've been at the last 5 KB shows and they have not given any joints out ..so what show were you at?
I don't think they even do that any more.... - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 1:31pm
Anonymous pssssssst........hey music fan, try the cookies! oops gotta go now. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 2:49pm
Anonymous Joints at Logans show...where were you? - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 2:51pm
Anonymous Uh for the record the comp is to showcase island bands and not ment just for ska fest. Plus KB doesn't want to be associated with the ska scene. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 2:57pm
Georgey look buddy I was posting my honest review of the band, I thought that this was a reviews section. This is the first time I have posted on this fucking board and I don't think I will again. And by the way, I was at the Big D and the Kids Table show and I thought that King Bong was the worst band there. I wasn't too fond of Big D either but at least they went nuts on stage. I didn't mind the hoochys, they even had more energy than King Bong and the Planet Smashers were fucking awesome. I never said i didn't like King Bong's music, I enjoy that Anna song, and I like the one about slowing down and smoking a little pot ( even though the lead singer has played that song in every single fucking band he's been in, in victoria ). And don't talk shit about Dane because he's done more for the Vic Ska scene than anyone in victoria - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 3:05pm
SweetGrass Georgey, don't lose faith in posting on this board. You are entitled to your opinion but it does seem that whatever side of the argument you are on, you will get blasted by someone. It's true we are a big band and your comments about our energy are good to know. It sounds like you are a ska fan as well and we are moving in a different direction. I'm glad you like Anna, It's one of my faves and mostly we're having a really good time and our show reflects this. I didn't understand your comment about Dane, I didn't see anything on the post. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 3:58pm
SweetGrass Just read post and get the Dane ref. but it's true, I know Dane very well personally and have worked with him and still feel ok. saying it would be cool to see more variety in the local bands he has showcased during ska fests and not just focusing on the big out of town acts. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 4:19pm
georgey haha, now I feel bad. anyways, I will probably come check you guys out a lucky in the not to distant future. it is true that the stage at steamers is small hell. and I am looking forward to hearing all the bands on that kiltlifter organized comp. it just pissed me off the reply i got from that asshole bong fan guy, i didn't mean any disrespect, it was just my honest opinion - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 4:40pm

Hey I think as a band we are always open for review, and as far as I'm concerned everyone is entitled to their opinion. I always say you if don't like KB don't come to our shows, simple. The fact that you take the time out of your day to say that you don't like us, when this was a posting about a show that happened last Friday night, not "the" show you said that you saw, says more about you than us. We had 200 folks at our last show, every bar we play invite us back and
I have yet to find a room we can't win over.
As far as the song Anna or any other song that is in the body of my work, like many song writers who have been creating original music for a number of years we develop a number of good songs that work. If you ever write a decent song and if you stay with it long enough boy, you may begin to understand that. The song Grow is one such song. Why would I stop playing it ? It's a great song and crowds literaly roar when we play it.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean with the Dane refrence but I will say that I have worked with Dane on a couple of projects and have found him to be a professional, promoter who is good at what he does. That does not change my opinion that few local bands appear on any of his bills, and bands like the Bloodwarmers & the Kiltlifters, who by virtue of the fact that they have stayed together this long making
great ska music are playing free shows at ska fest, while One Drop,( who are amazing and who I'm sure work hard and get my respect), play the "Big" shows. It's about clicks and nepitisim, and I hate both.
As far as the comment regarding not wanting to be affiliated with the ska scene, that is actually true. It also tells me who wrote the post because he is the only person I have had that conversation with. But the fact is that KB is not really a ska band in the Victoria sense of the word. We don't put on little suits, and little hats. We don't ride scooters, and we don't kiss scene ass. We are very proud to find ska in our roots but we are also proud to find funk, punk, metal, jazz, and rock and our set reflects that..
And in the end the HG were never supposed to be on that bill with the Planet Smashers, they begged Tamara to get on, then they pulled some bullshit so that they could play second instead of the 30 min opening set that was thrown as bone to them.
We were paid to play that show and frankly were very nice by going on first ,I could have told them to fuck off and Tammara would have pulled them from the bill right there..as it was we got our full set and they got yanked....
The point is that we are not in competition with any other band. I don't want your labels on my music, and while you're free to post what you want about my music I can assure you it will not affect the future of KB or any of it's members..
In other words..sticks and stones boy..
Peace

don King Bong, it's nice to see the respect you're showing others who offer critisism of you're performance. Critisism--in a constructive way--will only help improve your work and it was refreshing to see a band acknowledge that. Classy. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 5:27pm

Yo Dean if your accusing me that I'd like to state the fact I use my name and if I have something critical to say I'll say it to you. Such as lose the sour grapes about One Drop, they are a good band. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 7:10pm
Anonymous who's dean? - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 7:50pm
Zoot suite gomers "we dont put on little suites,we don't wear little hats,we don't ride scooters and we don't kiss scene ass". That's probably the most intelligent thing I've heard come out of that guys mouth, ever. I like ska music, but I find the costume suite scooter thing to be kinda annoying, and quite franly, stupid. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 7:57pm
SweetGrass I think you'll notice Bong mentions how great a band One Drop is and how he respects them but that bands who work hard every week like Bloodwarmers and Kiltlifters should have some of the light too. I didn't hear a sour note directed at One Drop There? Sour Grapes to you! - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 9:59pm
SweetGrass I would also like to take the time to address the review of earlier as lacking in energy and let you know what happened. We were supposed to be up after Hoochy Girls, but they were unable to fulfill their time spot for whatever reason, so with 10 minutes notice and missing several members of the band who were expecting a later start time we put our egos aside, went up first ,called all members, who got there in 15 minutes, and did our full set, no warm up or sound check! Because show got started late Hoochies got cut short after us. We did this without complaint for the sake of the show but obviously weren't thrilled about getting pushed up like that. It's really all about the music after all! - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 10:03pm
Georgey this sweet grass guy sounds nice enough, but the King Bong comes off a bit arrogant, all I said was you guys lacked a bit of stage presence when I saw you, in my personal opinion (which means shit). I said I like the music, why are you so pissed off. I didn't mean any disrespect. I know I didn't go to the show in question but you play so many shows I didn't think I was going bitched at for making such a small comment. And by the way, both the Bloodwarmers and Kiltlifters have already played the main stage at previous ska fests, I don't think they mind letting One Drop play this one, it would get boring having the same local openers year after year. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 10:13pm
SweetGrass That would be SweetGrass Girl... The Sweetgrass Girls are the voices behind the man on stage...Very reasonable, but don't piss us off! - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 10:25pm
Simmer down, big monkey King Bong guy seems to have good things to say sometimes, but other times, no offence intended, he comes off sounding like a bit of an asshole, and think he is much too sensitive to fair critisisms that people may have about his band. The rest of the band seems to have a bit more class when it comes to this kinda thing.Maybe they should take him aside for a down to earth chat one day.Peace. - Mon, 23 Jun 2003 11:30pm
SweetGrass In the begining of the board there was kindness; and then came the anons and all their not so kind responses, and from the mire the beast was born...we call him, with much affection... KING BONG, ( he is a rather large monkey ya know!) We love him just the way he is and sometimes we sing about him...

Oh and the Kiltliftrers and Blodwarmers may have played free shows on the main stage but they never opened for any of the big acts at night ..like they should have been... ask Al from the BloodWarmers if "he minds"... AND isn't Dane IN One Drop?MMMMMM go figure.

Georgey hey bong, the both the bloodwarmers and kiltlifters opened for the New York Ska Jazz ensemble during the second annual ska fest, and members of the kiltlifters opened for the pietasters with street prophets union last year. and no, dane isn't in One Drop. Even if he is was he is putting on the god damned festival anyway so it's up to him. - Tue, 24 Jun 2003 1:54pm

Members of..piss off
and know what who the fuck cares anyway..you think Dane puts on Ska fest cause he loves ska..please HE MAKES A BIG PROFIT FROM IT, there is no community mindedness about it at all it's about money, like any other promoter except he uses the non-profit groups he associates with to make HIS profit margin higher by using their connections and their volunteers.
You think I'm the only one who thinks this way, think again....but I'm the only one with the balls to say it, have a chat with The Bloodwarmers and see how they feel about the whole issue, and that's just one group I have heard from.
Like I said who cares, Bong ain't playin no free shows for Dane ever, so I don't really give a shit who is on the bill.
Fuck you, Fuck ska fest, and Fuck your scene you little dick

re: 'like any other promoter' - I happen to personally know that Malcolm from SOS, a promoter, is completely and utterly into the music. Either that, or he's willing to lose money from time to time just so that he can get his street cred and is a master of deception.

Nah...

Anyway, I'd watch the generalizations there.

Just so the rest of your band knows. I think you guys are great musicians and top notch people. We were very sorry for the mix up at that show we were told a time to play and our drummer showed up at that time (underage people can't hang out in bars right?)My only beef is with da monkey. The cd IS for ska fest despite what the anon person the monkey claims is me says. It is to help promote local bands and what better time and place to do it. - Tue, 24 Jun 2003 7:15pm

Dane be a good man. He has always been supportive of the local scene regardless of genre. Sure, he digs ska and that's where he focusses his energy, all power to him. We need more folks like him around IMO. He hasn't done much for us but his PMA can't be a bad thing.
More about Greenlaw...what did you folks notice? Ozzie and Skyla are good folk, wish I coulda been there. have heard good things about KB too. - Tue, 24 Jun 2003 8:35pm
SweetGrass Can't say enough good things about Greenlaw Ave. Very fine musicians with a unique sound that flowed in and out through their songs. I was very happy to have shared the stage with them and would do it again in a heartbeet. They are playing in Vic again around 7th of July and you can get their c.d.'s at the show. Skyla's voice lent an edge to the music that lifted the groove to interesting places and accompanying sounds were tight and well played. Love them! - Wed, 25 Jun 2003 1:07am
Brett are you fucking joking me, Dane is one of the best guys I have ever met, if he wanted to put on a show that made money why not a more mainstream type of music like rock fest or some shit like that. I wish there were more people like Dane here and less uptight dips like that King Bong guy. - Wed, 25 Jun 2003 2:05pm

I believe that he has come up seriously short on more than one of these events. Producing a large gig like ska fest is hardly ever going to make you any cash to speak of, in fact it's a frickin' nightmare. I've produced a few shows in my time..never again. Dane does it because he digs the music and if he _happens_ to make a lottle coin as a result of contributing to Victoria's flaccid arts scene then MORE POWER TO HIM. That said...ska bores me and i ain't goin. - Wed, 25 Jun 2003 2:12pm
Fred the Dragon Um Dean, I love your band, and I think you're a great guy, but seriously, you need to chill out. You're making a bit of an ass of yourself on here. Sure, there's some assholes talking shit about you and your band, but a lot of the people you're freaking on are just offering a different point of view. I know you're not going to bend over and kiss anyone's ass, but you're being a little harsh. You're being threatening and bullying people. That's never cool. How would you like it if a bunch of people were on here talking about bitch-slapping you or the SweetGrass Girls? Negativity begets negativity Dean. You can stand up for yourself, but not at the expense of other people... no matter how fucked you think their opinions are. - Wed, 25 Jun 2003 2:14pm

Starting to wonder.... What's with this toughguy "bitchslap" nonsense? I used to think this Kola dude sounded like an intelligent human being, but it seems he's flown the coop as of late. Get a grip dude, you're simply making an ass out of yourself, and your band. - Thu, 26 Jun 2003 1:08am
