EarGoggles Vol. 2 DVD
Bull Terrier Productions
By: Denis Maile

The second installment of the EarGoggles DVD found its way into my DVD player, and the speakers were cranked up loud. Watching this DVD is like spending an entire month at The Cobalt and not worrying about the stink rubbing off on you. Apart from bands there was also a short movie about a ninja who is as crazy as the day is young, and a skateboarding intermission with Hippie Mike skating a 2x4 on wheels. Throw in a reading by Chris Walter for the literate and it’s a party.

The bands playing The Cobalt’s stage are the main course of action as there are over 25 of them in all. Some hi-lights included Mr. Plow bringing Chi Pig on stage for an acoustic rendition of the ‘Cannibal Café’. Fuck The Facts from Ottawa delivered a female fronted metal performance, and you would not believe the voice that comes out of this tiny chick. Hippiecritz played their brand of punk rock that could be considered both dirty and dirty, while featuring the infamous Mr. Awesome on bass. Anatolian Wisdom was decked out in leather, spikes and corpse paint. The only thing they were missing was some blood drinking.

Balls Out Face First did the punk rock thing, and their singer would have won the best pants award if it weren’t for Lesbian Fist Magnet’s tight pants featured earlier in the DVD. Jones Bones put on a disgusting display of debauchery that featured shots of people jumping off a balcony into a giant pile of trash. And what would a night at The Cobalt be without The Jolts? They played ‘Black Snake’ from their latest album. Tyrants Blood had 4 guitarists on stage and one ragin’ bassist. That’s 29 strings of pure metal!

And how could I not mention the great performances by Troll Band, Sinned, Japandroids, Uptown Riot, The Fight United and No Bunny from the states who featured a shameless, pantless front man in a bunny mask. Speaking of shameless front men, Alcoholic White Trash tore the house down and brought the crowd on stage. EarGoggles Vol. 2 ended with a Wendy Thirteen serenade while her friend played the acoustic guitar. It was a very suiting ending as she sang about the shit water hotel.

So the next time you’re at The Cobalt pick yourself up a copy of this thoroughly entertaining DVD and while you’re at it you should scoop up Vol. 1 as well if you don’t already have it. Also available at Zulu records on W. 4th, Audiopile on Commercial drive and Red Cat Records on Main St. - Mon, 24 Nov 2008 10:43pm Edited: Mon, 24 Nov 2008 10:45pm
