At the Bayanihan Community Center, 1709 Blanshard St. Victoria, BC

Hellacaust - brutal blackmetal/deathmetal/thrash. Recently released a split with Vancouver sweethearts Mudlark. Fucking awesome. http://myspace.com/hellacaust

Hands of Death - long running crossover band from Montreal, Quebec. Members of Everyone I Know Must Die, among other bands. http://myspace.com/handsofdeath

He Lies In Ruin - Tragedy-ish newer crust-hardcore band from Quebec. Don't know too much about them, demo forthcoming.

War Hero - fast as shit fastcore violence. Charles Bronson, anyone? From Squamish, BC .. People live there, I guess. http://www.myspace.com/warheroviolence

Scumbelly - grindcore weirdness from Vancouver. They can play their instruments from what I can tell, when I can hear what's going on. Blurry AND catchy. http://myspace.com/scumbelly

Cyborg Justice - local deathmetal. sounds like Deicide but more technical, with lots of sweeping. http://www.myspace.com/cyborgjusticefuck

$8 for the fuckload of out of town bands. If you feel this is too much to pay for a show with 5 out of town bands, please call me 250-217-2909 I would love to hear about it and accomodate you. Ask for Scott. - Fri, 29 Aug 2008 3:00pm Edited: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 3:22pm

Yeah, one of the members of HOD sent the show poster to the Bayanihan webmaster to put up on their page. He forwarded it to all the board members for that place, and they were 'creeped out' by the picture, and the band names Hands of Death and Hellacaust. So they weren't even going to let me do the show there, but they changed their mind, but told me I wasn't allowed to poster for the show. Rather than get it cancelled again, I think I'll just respect their wishes. - Mon, 8 Sep 2008 7:00am

I keep reading really good things about Hellacaust on music forums as they play different towns on the way out here. I am beyond pumped. Metalheads that are too cool to come to all ages shows are going to be severely missing out by the looks of it. - Fri, 26 Sep 2008 9:54am

I had a great time putting on this show. Not too much trouble to speak of, other than some fucking losers who attacked my sound guy because he was trying to protect the bands from getting their teeth smashed in by mics getting knocked around. Apparently this isn't the first time these people have threatened him. He fucking let us use his PA for free! This will not be tolerated the next time I throw a show, and the offending parties will not be allowed entry. Get fucked, you thugs.

Cyborg Justice ripped it up, good to hear them on point. Vocals were brutal.

Stegasaurus Beach Defense played a guerilla set for 5 minutes. They sure have come a long way since the first show. Vocals were a little bit low but I still enjoyed their set.

War Hero! Where did these guys come from? Great powerviolence played by people obviously stoked on music. I look forward to seeing them again.

Scumbelly. Wholy fucking shit. 4 guitar amps! When they busted into their grind parts it sounded fucking crushing. Tight drummer, I liked his blasts. Good vocal tradeoffs, enjoyed the "Melt Banana"ish vocals from their female guitar player/singer.

He Lies In Ruin- fast d-beat in the vein of Tragedy, so some stripped down melodies thrown in for good measure. I look forward to their first full-length or ep, as of right now they just have a demo.

Hellacaust- people really lost their shit over this band. Not enough good blackmetal comes through town, and it shows. Black Witchery, Inquisition .. uhhh, no one else is coming to mind immediatly until these guys. Glad they got to play a long set considering how many bands were on the bill.

Hands of Death- I've been listening to these guys for many years and never had the chance to see them live. Wholy shit did they not disappoint! I was worried everyone would be partied out after Hellacaust but people continued to rage.

All and all a great success, thanks to everyone who contributed by paying at the door, and even the people who came even though they didn't have money (I've never been one to turn someone away at the door.) Made me feel better about losing money on the show, it would have been shitty to be out of pocket AND an empty room with a few people just standing around. Special thanks to the people who paid extra (Meg, Kev, Doomy, among other people), realizing that the bands weren't going to break even.

I wish I had more money to give them but I was tapped out paying for the venue and gear rentals, which I absorbed and didn't take out of the door. In the grand scheme of things, a few hundred dollars out of pocket to make the bands and people from here happy is definitely worthwhile. Next time maybe twice as many people will show up!

Thanks again everyone! See you at the Impaled show! - Mon, 29 Sep 2008 2:50pm

This show was awesome, Hellacaust and HOD both really surprised me. War Hero are an awesome band and awesome dudes, the abbreviated Stegosaurus set kicked ass and Scumbelly punched me in the head 25 times. Thanks again for the rad show Scott. - Wed, 1 Oct 2008 1:55pm

There really has to be a better way... one off promoters personally losing big amounts of money on shows which so many of us agree really do have to see the light of day. Even those of us who don't make it out to those exact shows.

Geoff from Audiopile here was talking about how it seems that when one person takes on a (promotional) role, everyone kinda puts all the work on him/her, just because you know he's reliable and will get it done! But it can be overwhelming (in some cases financially) and the risk is burnout & lack of resources for the next shows. A more effective solution in order to survive is for all of us to learn how to share the load... offer to help share the load... and accept the offers...
I'm not saying thats the case here, this just made me think of it and I'm rambling.

Hopefully the Cobalt draw helped the bands out a bit. Lots of people had good things to say about the ones we got, plus we got Mitochondrion!
I must say the Mito set totally took me off guard - most def looking forward to the next one! - Wed, 1 Oct 2008 10:05pm Edited: Wed, 1 Oct 2008 10:08pm

I don't really 'like' putting on shows, and haven't done so for years. Back when I was actually doing it, we were usually throwing the shows at our house and the risk/work load was shared by everyone who lived there. Plus we were the only people who were actually putting on good all-ages shows at the time, besides the hardcore kids, so there was a necessity to step up if I wanted any good shows to happen in Victoria. There are more promoters in town here now, I just tend to pass the shows onto them. Lately though it seems like certain promoters are getting lazy and just putting on ill-promoted bar shows, and since I'm friends with some of the guys from these bands, as well as Mike from Putrescence (in regards to booking the Impaled show) I came out of retirement to make sure there would be good all-ages shows for them rather than shitty bar shows.

I'm going back into retirement after the Impaled show, which I foresee losing my ass on. Hah. - Thu, 2 Oct 2008 1:07pm
