Big Thanks to C&A for bringing Origin to town and for saving me a trip to Van. I could care less about Cryptopsy, although it might be funny to see them play some of their new shit. - Thu, 21 Aug 2008 6:48pm

I'm betting that by this point in the tour Craptopsy will be demanding Origin play last so that there are even still people in the venue to witness their pathetic display (other than those who are too drunk to care). - Tue, 2 Sep 2008 3:24pm

just got home from the show... and origin killed. every member of the band blew my mind and they were fast as hell. how they do that every night is beyond me.
the opener was alright, kinda cracked me up.. "this next song is from our myspace page" spoken with a growl. hahah.
cryptopsy was boring. 2 salon selective models and 2 hipsters. left after 2 songs. and i stayed longer than most. kinda almost felt bad for them. - Fri, 19 Sep 2008 12:54am Edited: Fri, 19 Sep 2008 12:55am

Origin was sick, as Mike said, the bass was absolutely mind blowing. I just wish I could've heard it better in the mix.
The first band sounded too muddy. 5150+vader cabs sound cruddy in my experience. Awesome on their own, but muddy together. Again, they were fine, but nothing memorable.
Also, I left before cryptopsy... Yikes... - Fri, 19 Sep 2008 12:18pm

who would be fool enough to think they could follow Origin and look anything less than flaccid? I could think of a handfull of bands that might stand a chance, and cryptflopsy aint one of them. - Sat, 20 Sep 2008 12:46pm

I definitely didn't have any problem with Cryptopsy like everyone else seems to have. I sure preferred this vocalist over Mike De Salvo. Sure, their new stuff had some simplistic grooves that made me scratch my head in bemusemnent a little, I spose, but there aren't many bands out there who I can see for a fourth time and still be legitimately entertained, that's for shit sure. True, HIV, Origin should have gone on afterwards - I wounder if they switched bill positions from city to city. The Last Felony coulda used a bit more support - I had no problem with them, either.
But then there's fucking Origin......holy fucking crap......I had the luxury of sitting on the stairs to right of the stage so I could look down directly over Mr. Longstreth......a drum clinic from fucking heaven.....thank-you, Raf, for shooting them - when we looked back at your video it looked the bassist was playing in fast motion......the fret hand was this fucking blur that did not look real - fucking insane as shit. The singer was quite the comedian - probably thought we were a bunch of hicks. I wish I had a better view of Jeff's shredding.

Curmudgeon, I was expecting to see you at our show!

Ok, let me see if I can gather my thoughts... ORIGIN, fucking ORIGIN!!!!
That was the show of the year for me, I've wanted at them for years and I got to see them at the Cobalt!
Thanks SO FUCKING MUCH, Heather! It was great meeting you under such killer circumstances and congrats on being cool enough to make this your first show in Vancouver!
And thanks to Wendy & John, of course, I love them. I was telling people that I was making involuntary squeaking noises coming off the skytrain to the show.. butterflies in my stomach for days. First time seeing them.
That said, DRW opened and played a wicked set.. totally rose to the occasion & delivered.. so my neck was shot & I was spent from the get-go. I'm hoping its better by Carcass.
I got to plant myself front/center off the shower for ORIGIN so I didn't have to miss anything! 'cept I had to kick a couple of people who cozied up too close a few times (wtf is wrong with you leaning into a bony knee in your butt?!), but later the gross mis guy was kind enough to keep the pitsters at bay so I could focus. Yes!
That massive vocalist was wearing a Misery Index shirt - fuck, that was a great show too.

Before, when I imagined seeing them, probably in Seattle, I thought it'd be more surreal & elegant, so fast that it'd feel like slow motion, with everything else fading into the background and them sorta in that fuzzy, glowing, distant light - and it SO wasn't that way at all! Everyone was amped up and cuz it was the Cobalt the crowd was lit up with everyone I knew flying around, so definatley different from seeing them at a commodore type place like where I'd expected to finally catch them. That was brilliant.

Just the best night. Thanks those of you there who were as happy & excited as me, it made for a great time.
I got the new cd! I never get stuff but I felt like I owed since everyone was so generous that night, and I want them to come back. Now I feel even more indebted!
:)

p.s. was it me or were those cryp guitars excruciatingly painful? - Sun, 21 Sep 2008 11:37am Edited: Sun, 21 Sep 2008 11:46am

Saw Origin in Vic and Van ... just blew me away both nights. Such a tight unit! All songs played to perfection ... even as a 4 piece. A shame no Jeremy Turner (CR, that was Paul Ryan on guitar .. J. Turner is the big bald guy that toured with Cannibal Corpse when they were here), but it was a complete NON issue as soon as they got things going.

My only critique was that the guitar sound was a little crappy, but I'm not a fan of the digi-guitar rack mount sound at all. Definitely could use a beefing up.

As far as I'm concerned .. Cryptopsy didn't play this show. In fact, Cryptopsy disbanded when Lord Worm left the first time, got back together for a reunion tour/album, and broke up again. That band that you 30 people watched was not Cryptopsy .. It was just some amalgamation of the Quebec heavy music "scene" with Korn as their stylists. - Sun, 21 Sep 2008 5:53pm

Agreed on the tone, Shawn. I found it hard to make out a lot of what was going on in Origin's set as well, which was lame. It was an awesome set, nonetheless... - Mon, 22 Sep 2008 11:02pm

I thought the show was pretty good. The first band was ok but kinda sounded like a wall of noise. Everything kinda blended together. Origin was amazing. They were extremely tight. The drummer was awesome as was his sub bass. The bassist was insane and the guitarist was really good too. The vocalist was pretty good and was definitely entertaining to watch. Cryptopsy was good but their levels weren't. Guitars are really important in Metal and I just couldn't hear them. It seems to be 'cool' for the sound guy to have the drums punch you in the chest and the guitars weak in the background. I don't listen to Cryptopsy a lot but I've listened enough to know some of the songs. It was extremely difficult to figure out what songs they were playing due to the levels. - Fri, 26 Sep 2008 10:31am
