Anonymous perhaps you should have walked the 5 steps outside from the patio and smoked there like everyone else instead of on their patio or in their bar??? - Mon, 12 May 2003 4:38pm
Pot Fan I think bad judgement was used by all ..but I have smoked a ton of weed on that patio...and it was a SMOKED OUT BRAINS show with who as the opener? The band that give weed away at their shows? King Bong! They had to expect some people to light up! I have seen other clubs in this city fill with bud smoke at other such events, the bouncers did not chuck anyone out..just made them put it out . that is the fair approach. That bouncer seems like a dick, bet he wants to be a cop! - Mon, 12 May 2003 4:44pm

Correct me if I'm wrong but as much as we'd all like it to be different isn't weed still illegal? Why yes it is, and if you get nabbed on their patio they could lose their liqour license. Which starts at about a quarter million dollars. How hard is it be cool to the bar your at, and walk even ten feet away so they wont get fucked if you get nabbed? Maybe I'm just rambling but I've spent ten years working in nightclubs and I've thrown out every single person I ever found smoking dope in the bar while it was open. Notice I said while it was open. - Mon, 12 May 2003 7:50pm
brain acctually we got passed a joint by someone i guess I could have turned it down but I still think they should move to the states or something - Mon, 12 May 2003 8:27pm
Curious George Wow. For the first time ever... I agree with Jay. Wow.

Anyways...

While I do think that it sucks that it happened to you guys, I do have to side with Steamers on this. Jay's right, why should the bar have to risk losing their license because of you? I have smoked outside Steamers (not on the patio) hundreds of times, and had no problem. Why? Because once you're outside, Steamers doesn't have to worry about the license thing. If you didn't have the respect to do that, well sorry buddy, you deserve it. I do think barring FOR LIFE is a little extreme. Instead of slagging them on a message board, why don't you try calling up Andrew at Steamers and talking to him like a man. The worst that he can say is his decision stands. Maybe if you try being civil, he might see your point and maybe let it go. I don't know, I've never pissed Andrew off or smoked pot IN his bar, but I know he's a nice guy. I'd say give it a try! I want to see Smoked Out Brainzzzz play!! - Mon, 12 May 2003 8:53pm

Anonymous after this thursday you all will have something to say about de-criminalization of marijuana... or at least that's what has been "leaked to the media"... but the most you can possess without being charged with traffiking is under 27 or 30g's... I can't remember the last time i was able to buy 27g's - Tue, 13 May 2003 3:26am
A*Funk Sadly, I watch these things like a hawk, and here's the story:

The bill may well be introduced this thursday, but like all others it needs to go through three readings, usually seperated by a goodly space to time to give MP's etc plenty of time to think about it/consult the public. Luckily, both Commons and Senate committees have done this (the Senate actually recommended we legalize). Nonetheless, it is unusual for a bill to pass through third reading in the space of two months (unless its an important supply bill, etc)... and seeing as the spring Parliamentary session usually ends in the middle of June if not sooner, this one's gonna die "on the floor" as they say.

So yeah, maybe it'll get reintroduced in the winter session (starts Sept 30), but with a Liberal leadership contest in November, its still not gonna have time to pass before Paul Martin gets his stinking hands on it and throws it in the trash can faster than he can say "yes sir Mr. Bush," which will likely be the tone of his upcoming administration.

Sorry guys, but there's alot of hard waiting left until we're allowed to make free choices as adults. - Tue, 13 May 2003 3:33am

Dear Smoked Out Brains: You once called my friend's radio show on CFUV 101.9 (DEADPAN DELIVERY - Thursdays at 8pm) and asked them to play on of your songs. They laughed at and they didn't. I hope this clarifies your stupidity for you. - Tue, 13 May 2003 3:41am

Brains Actually I did speak with Andrew and he was choked for good reason but is King Bong barred, they lit and passed us the Doobie and the bouncer saw it, I'm not disrespecting Andrew but who pointed the blame at us is the unmanly one. I'm sure in time I'll talk to Andrew again and see if this can be forgotten but in the mean time I think it's cuz we're not a radio friendly band.In the end, so be it. - Tue, 13 May 2003 1:29pm
Anonymous "ottawa- The federal government is considering fining small time marijuana users as little as 100$ under the decriminalization legislation that is expected to be introduced on THURSDAY"
"...sources say that the amount, equivalent to a low-level speeding ticket, was still under discussion Monday as Justice Department offficials scrambled to put the FINISHING TOUCHES ON THEIR BILL...." hence they are finished? so why would they need any further legislation or readings if they consider themselves finished? who else needs to read it if the government is happy and "scrambling" to get the bill together intime for thursday?
I understand that most things take forever to pass, but this has waited long enough and it WILL be passed on thursday with out a doubt... its called "fast-tracking" - Tue, 13 May 2003 1:58pm
Anonymous ion my opinion... fuck the states and anything they have to say about it. There is no way that the senate would promote legalization of anything... they have spent billions of dollars to end the "war on drugs". And they have clearly stated that they don't want us(canada) to change any of our laws on drugs, which is bullshit, and if we do we will be subject to longer waits at the boarders(yada yada yada)... and this bill won't be like everyother bill that "dies on the floor", i will bet money on it. - Tue, 13 May 2003 2:03pm
Mr.XXX I wouldn't use that radio friendly excuse to justify you not being able to play steamers. That's pretty weak.Steamers has supported pretty much every style of music since I've been going there. This week alone.Mon-open mic (radio friendly?)Tues-Jazz(radio friendly).Wed-country/bluegrass(radio friendly).etc.It seems you truly have smoked out your brains. - Tue, 13 May 2003 3:06pm
no brains more like it Brains you don't have a clue man! Your little tirade in livevic has blown your chance out the window. Andrew said he wouldn't waste his time after he saw this, no matter how far you backpeddle. As for blaming the fact that the joint was lit up by others - what the fuck is that?

I'm guessing this bill will not be past on thursday but we shall see. It only means its decriminalized, not legal. What happens when you get busted with twenty individual one gram baggies? That is criminal and the bill will not cover your ass. You will still get a criminal record. I believe you should not recieve a criminal record for simple possesion but that doesn't mean we should all light up. Pot is highly overrated and i would prefer my teenaged kids to not get invovled. It is there choice but i learned my lesson the hard way, i'm now a lazy slacker and always will be until i lay off the pipe which won't happen. Get off the couch! - Tue, 13 May 2003 7:24pm

Anonymous pot pot pot
whatevah
i stopped smokin the shit a few years ago
its a creeper drug
meaning.....it creeps up on regular users until they cant deal with anything remotely real unless they are high
which means all the time
i used to sell weed untill i saw friends of mine having a hard time dealing with simple problems from over use
i dont have a prob with people doin it in moderation but its like anything else...you can abuse it
eg. try talking to someone whos really high when you arent
thats why they call it dope
it doesnt really enrich your life
so why smoke it everyday?
should it be illegal? NO!
do what ya want but realize the effects of what you do
and to base a bands beliefs on weed is really kinda dumb
if weed disapeared would you survive? yeah you would - Wed, 14 May 2003 2:01am

Troutbreath is right, Bong speakes to many issues in our set it is really one of the reasons that we exsist.
Many of the members of Bong have spent years as activists, for many social justice issues. Medical Pot is just one.
These recent threads have been about our weed stance, and I'm not complaining cause press is press, but what about the other stuff that we talks about...what about the coporatization of the world, what about Human rights, what about revolution of the mind, culture jamming, questioning authority! What about raising peoples conciousness and waking them up..If pot opens a door, if pot creates a rallying point, a place that we can all start to meet ..what the hell is your problem? I would much rather see an 18 yr old boy on their couch smoking weed then on CNN invading another country for their oil!
We are wasting Billions of dollars a year to please the American War on Drugs. Billions that are stripped away from our social saftey net..THEY ARE KEEPING MARIJUANA FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE DYING!!!And their war is bullshit!
Nine cops recently attended a bust of a MOM and POP operation consisting of 30 plants and two lights! Nine cops at $60,000 a year plus, for two quiet older people who are sick..not HA not Drug Zars..just sick people...
Just you try and shut me up, I have not even started to scream yet!

Curious George Hey Sticky,

If it was just a couple old people growing weed because they're sick, why would they need 30 plants? I mean really dude, that would yield them like 5 pounds! I'm a smoker, so I agree with most of what you're saying. But let's call a spade a spade. Obviously these sick, old people weren't simply growing for personal consumption.

CG - Wed, 14 May 2003 1:08pm
Curious George Whoops! Just redid my math. Sorry, I'd say 30 plants would yield 2 pounds. BURNOUT! - Wed, 14 May 2003 1:12pm
Anonymous "...what happen's when your caught with 21 individual baggies...." what the hell are you walking around with 21 individual baggies unless you had the intent to traffic the drug? of course your gonna get a record dumbass... just because its not legal doesn't mean its not an advance towards the right way for marijuana. at any rate this bill is being passed for people like me and most other people around(don't wanna speak for eveyone tho') who like to roll ONE up(or 2) and go somewhere chill and smoke'm down without getting a criminal record if we are caught. tho there is still alot of grey matter surrounding the 15g limit with tickets and such... but we'll wait and see ;) less than 24hrs away now! - Wed, 14 May 2003 1:46pm

Sorry George, I should have clairified..I did not want to get into too much detail but these two old people were keeping half of their harvest and donating the other half to one of the compassion clubs. No profit involved, pure donation..I taught these people to grow because they could not afford to buy the bud they needed, as a way to give back the would donate to the club. The Federal Government can't suppy them even if they say they can have it, the Federal Government won't allow me to grow medical marijuana for them ...because I've been convicted of growing medical marijuana!
It's a stupid circle.
Finally, yeild is dependant upon the strain, the available light, and the skill and care of the grower..try five Jack plants under two 1000 w sodies..I promise even if you're a half ass grower you'll do two lbs. These folk were doin Champange..a good yeilder but certianly not Jack! I think these Folk were averaging 1.5 per harvest..not huge but more than they needed.
Hope that clears it up a little George.
Peace,

Troutbreath This new Bill seems absurd. $100 fine for 15 grams, six months in jail and $1000 for one more gram. What I can't believe is I find myself in agreement with a member of the Alliance on that one. What's this world coming to? - Thu, 15 May 2003 11:33am
Anonymous It is a smoke screen bill no doubt, trying to delay the population of canada from fighting for legalization for another few more years. They talked about legalization in the 70's and I remember everyone sat on there ass for years and talked about how great it was going to be and then the government came back with an excuse that they didn't know how to tax it so they weren't going to pass the bill. If they pass this bill we will shut up for at least ten years, well the majority of pot smokers do not get involved with more than a quarter at a time which makes it perfectly fine for them. They must keep pushing towards legalization though considering the mass amount of money being infused into the ontario and britsh coloumbia provinces. Pot is a multi-billion dollar industry in BC alnoe and the government is not going to just let that money go away. But you all must realize that the US knows this as well and that the US will lose countless billions every year if canada legalizes and so legalization is canada's trump card. As long as we can threaten to legalize than we have economic power with the US. - Thu, 15 May 2003 3:47pm

An excellent point..and lets not forget that the "profit" for the war on drugs is enjoyed by BOTH sides in this stupid prohibition!
Cops make busts, get promoted, make more money. Lawyers, crown procecuters, judges, court staff, and countless law enforcement support business, not to mention the police and secret police budgets that would suffer as a result of legalization. There is so much profit on the "good guy" side that they have a vested interest in keeping pot illegal.
Chew on that one friends...

A*Funk ... and of course, that money's coming out of YOUR pocket. I'd rather we spent the bucks on healthcare myself. Its an interesting cycle. We smoke the weed, which is apparently a problem for the government (which seeks to control the exercise of our freedom) - who then set up a bureaucratic infrastructure to police our freedoms. Only problem is, this costs money, which comes from us, the potsmokers/growers who make our money off of the very weed the police are out to get.

How do we make enough money to pay our taxes and raise our kids? Grow weed (cause you sure can't do it at $8/hr + 10% in lieu of benefits). How do we "solve" the marijuana problem? Hire more cops. How do we pay for the cops? Raise taxes (or perhaps shift tax money from healthcare to policing???). How do we pay the tax increase, and raise our kids? ...you get the picture.

Nonetheless, interesting what DIDNT happen in Parliament today. - Fri, 16 May 2003 2:47am

Troutbreath I recieved an RCMP brochure in my BC Hydra bill this month. It concerns growing Marijuana in peoples homes. It warns me about my nieghbours and suggests I spy on them. I especially need to be vigilant if they don't cut their grass or open their blinds. So I have two questions for the RCMP. Have you ever read the book 1984 by George Orwell? The RCMP were established not only to enforce the laws in Canada but to remind the US of our Sovereignty by their presence in Western Canada, how do they feel enforcing a law that only exists because the United States wants it? - Fri, 16 May 2003 11:08am

Let me tell you about me....
I had a thriving bisness in Vancouver, owed part of a record label , and a magazine too!
I had pretty much quit smoking pot after Uni, just an occassional user...I have always voluntered some of my time to give back to the community, through public radio, and through work with various aid and poverty agencies and food banks, and finally when several of my friends died of AIDS the HIV education movement.
I've worked the needle exchange in more than one city....
In 95 I was in an accident and lost my eye..amongst other injuries..took a long time to recover..lost everything in the process, and by the time I woke up to the fact that the precription drugs that the doctors were feeding me for pain and other things were messing me up, years had gone by..
One of my friends in the HIV hospice movenment told me about the benifits of TCH as a pain medication...It saved my life..made me functional again...since that revelation I have endevored to supply and to tech people to supply their own medicene..because while the government debates this issue..the pain rages on man..it don't take a break for the summer, and it don't care what uncle sam wants...
I am not allowed to get a licence to grow medical marijuana..because I have been convicted of growing medical marijuana. While those idiots in that mine waste Millions of dollars fucking up...
I have supported the Movement through fund raisers for the clubs,( The next one being June 22 @ little Fernwood with Zola Bud/Green Law Avenue/ DJ Shakey T for Ted Smith's club), and with countless letters to my MP and to the PM! I have marched and protested and gone to Jail for this cause....And I may yet go into jail again....
There are many ways to raise your voice...
The point is to make a noise..any noise to help wake people up..
Peace

Troutbreath My Pot activist resume might be a little long for posting. Just so you know. I was in Gastown for the Smoke-in that resulted in the infamous Gastown riot, if memory serves I believe that was in 1971. The Smoke-in was to protest and bring attention to the beating of people caught in possesion of even one joint by police in Vancouver. That night I was assaulted by a cop on horseback and saved from a more serious beating when a store owner pulled me inside his establishment. The subsequent investigation and findings resulted in the resignation of the Vancouver City Chief of Police I'm still at it. If nothing else I'm a stubborn son-of-a-bitch. - Fri, 16 May 2003 12:39pm
Troutbreath Oh yeah, one more thing worth mentioning. When I worked as a Salmon Fishing guide I would discuss the drug laws in this country with many of the people I took out. One of them, for example, was a lawyer by the name of Jack Major. He was a regular visitor to one of the resorts I worked for and we got to know each other fairly well. We had several discussions over a glass of whiskey about the legalization of Marijuana in this countryThe Honourable Mr. Major is now one of the judges on the Supreme Court of Canada. - Fri, 16 May 2003 1:00pm
Justin Lee well, if you really want the shit about politics and pot from people and what we've done... my mom, uncle, and mark emery(excuse me if i spelled his name wrong) plus a few others who don't need to be named started the marijuana party from scratch.. yes that's right the marijuana party. I am not lying to anyone, cause who would really b.s. about starting a party like that?
so for that person who wanted to hear what we, potsmokers, have done politically to advance the legalization of marijuana there ya go... not sayin' that i personally did anything, but family is just as close ;) - Fri, 16 May 2003 1:09pm
