EPIC, EPIC, EPIC.

Frank Black is one of the best singer/songwriters of modern rock. To see him perform a solo show was truly a treat, and not at all what I was expecting.

That one of a kind voice, one of a kind guitar style was an absolute privilege to witness on a small, intimate stage. He started with acoustic, and finished with electric. I actually got goosebumps when he did Veloria, and other Pixies classics.

I have seen the Pixies, many times. I have seen the Catholics, many times. I have seen Frank Black, many times, but I will remember this show as one of the best performances ever. I actually feel sorry for anyone who wasn't there.

Could somebody PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, post some pictures?

He did Caribou, Where is my Mind? and Cactus from what I remember. Opener Aidan Knight did a really great job. Wish he stayed on stage because the second guy wasn't me or my wife's cup of tea. He kind of rambled on and on with really silly lyrics. Like, he wrote them on seperate LSD trips or something accompanied by an accordian [of all things to play solo] and a piano.

Black Francis was great. He interacted with the crowd, told some stories. Gave props to Canada. When he opened with Caribou, he said he thought it would connect with canadians. I also like the part when he was talking about an artist and a group of people kept shouting "Hey! Play Hey!". To which he responded that he was going to play that song but wouldn't anymore since they were talking when he was talking. That was awesome. I really respect that he appeared human. He aborted a few songs. One got screwed up in the middle. One he forgot how it went. And another he stopped because he thought it sounded stupid without drums and he apologized. The dude played what he wanted and didn't conform it into a greatest hits show, which I think disappointed a few people who just wanted to hear more Pixies songs but this is 2008. Let him be. - Fri, 8 Aug 2008 11:03am

That's really different from the review I heard about the show DTJ.

I wasn't there personally but I was told by an associate who went that Black Francis was disappointing. The feeling was that the material he was playing simply was not enough to carry a single guy and an acoustic, it needed a full band to cover up the fact that there is not much going on composition wise. Instead of rocking it came off as pretentious and lame to the point where the person that gave the review left early.

I also heard that David P Smith's set was great which would be expected since he normally kicks ass any time I have seen him.

To each his / her own I suppose.

I would agree with DTJackson's review. It was an amazing show. If anything, the lack of a backing band really made the songwriting stand out. I also loved the carefree, play anthing attitude. Skipping intros because he forgot how to play them, stopping songs because they sounded too much like the last one. It gave a human element to the show. Pixies' songs that I recall were Caribou, Where Is My Mind?, Cactus, Velouria and The Sad Punk (which was the one that he aborted due to "sounds stupid without a band"). I did end up leaving a few songs before the end due to exhaustion from travelling but he had been on stage for damn near two hours, so I don't think I missed much.
So glad I went. - Sat, 9 Aug 2008 6:46pm

i was thrilled to be at this show, and saddened to have to leave early in order to catch a wee bit of sleep before working at 6am (was so wired from the show that it took me forever to fall asleep, thus negating the need to leave early! damn i wish i was 19 again and able to pull all-nighters)

i have seen a number of sir francis shows in his various manifestations and this was one of the most unique and enjoyable ones for me...especially when he silenced the 'hey' shriekers that were right next to me breaking my ears. i do love when he pulls a pixies song out of his repertoire...but i am there to see him and he has a vast selection of his solo and catholics works to play for our listening delight. i loved his interaction and narratives as i have seen him play with hardly a word, just laying into song after song.

i loved the fact that his old acoustic looked like it has been with him, loved and abused for so long, and his electric *not a musician here so bear with my pedantic descriptions* shrieks to me in that oh so frank black way!

it has been interesting to watch his evolution, and my heart races at the gentler ballads as much as it did when i was a youngster hearing doolittle and bossanova for the first time... - Sun, 10 Aug 2008 8:32am

So he couldn't remember his own songs and had a hissy fit because some fans wanted him to play some Pixies songs (he was, after all, performing under his Pixies name "Black Francis" after dying for years with the name "Frank Black"). Couldn't figure out after how long on the road that some songs needed a band behind them (like maybe, the Pixies?). Yet this showed his "human" side, eh? Sounds more like his incompetent side. More evidence that without the Pixies he is all but washed up. Tickets were how much? As overrated (and incompetent) as Cat Power but not as cute. Hope you all had fun fawning over this guy. - Mon, 11 Aug 2008 1:01pm

He also played Mr.Grieves.

I find Black Francis a great composer, personally. One of the most consistent out there over such a long period of time. It did come off as a bit pretentious but it was an experience I wouldn't trade for anything. Different strokes for different folks.

He didn't have a hissy fit. He just informed them he wouldn't play that song. - Wed, 13 Aug 2008 2:59pm
