Rude Boy Holy Shit this band sucks!!!!
Last night at Soundgarden I saw the HOOTICHIES blow that shitty Kiltlifters band away! Nanaimos best band......It figures..wish they would have stayed there!
Didn't the ORIGINAL kiltlifters break up about 4 years ago...they should have stayed broken up.....BORING BORING BORING... you have to be one of the LAME barley legal morons on that shitty soundcheck show on cfuv to like this shit , you know those musicaly-trapped-at 15-losers who think that all ska comes from two bands... could those idiots play any more Less Than Jake or Pie Tasters? Or perhaps they could suck Dane Roberts dick a litte harder and promo that loser show staring Chris Murray....Only thing worse than a hip hop wanna b is a white Toronto boy pretending that he is a black man from Jamaica and it's 1961....I believe wigger is the term. Lame wanna B anyway you look at it, it's 2003 Murray and the Skatalites WILL ALWAYS KICK YOUR WHITE ASS and they have been doing it since 61!!!! Ever think of comming up with something new?... Wonder why Murray is the last member of Appartus still at it, LA laughed in his lame wanna B face and Victoria is one onf the few places he can still get a gig. Next stop for Murray..he will be selling pool equipment in Hamilton.
Even worse I saw some of those kiltlifter losers pulling down posters from other bands last week...desperate or what? I guess if you got no set, no talent, no brains you would think that pulling other peoples posters will get people to your show.... I think it's loser behaviour.
So if you really like SKA check out The Blood Warmers or Los Furieos , go see the Hootchies, but leave the SHITLIFTERS to play for the all ages kids who have yet to see a real show! - Sat, 19 Oct 2002 10:53am
Gerry Isn't it strange how some people attempt to make themselves cool by picking an historical scene and trying to emulate it. I mean I love ska and as a younger guy (14,15,16), I enjoyed all the original Jamician ska plus the Specials, Bad Manners and even that Montreal band Me Mom and Morgantaler(?), but I grew up, and took with me aspects of that love of ska..It helped to create my love for bands like Fishbone, and Sublime who also use aspects of ska but in new interesting ways..evolution and growth I think is good , trapped in the past not so good. I would personally rather put on a Desmond Dekker record than pay money to see a white man try to achieve that same effect.
Also, easy on the university radio guys...everbodys got to learn and that station is generally pretty crappy...so what can you expect?

Holy Shit your attitude sucks. What were you doing at a ska show if you hate ska any ways? There are only two radio shows in Victoria that play ska and both are on cfuv. I think that people who like ska are more then happy to have these two shows and will continue to support them. Do you know who hepcat is? Do you know Neville Staple (from the specials)? Any idea what they have in common? Chris Murray thats what. As if he doesnt have a place in ska. He is very talented and he is finally getting recognized for it. His first cd was released on moon records but I guess thats also just a trendy label in your mind. I dont understand how you can bash a guy who is doing what he loves and playing the music he loves. And your comment about white people playing ska, just out of curiosity ever heard of the two tone era? Ska would have died in Jamaica if people in the UK hadnt picked it up. The Kiltliftes are wonderful guys I've known them for quite some time if you dont like their music then dont listen. Just in case your wondering who I am. My name is Gare I play trumpet with the Hoochy Girls. I've played with Los Furios, Bloodwarmers and Kiltlifters countless times and I love the fact that Victoria is one of the few places in Canada where ska is still alive. Ska is all about Unity and Racial tolerance and I love that our scene is so supportive especially all the guys in the bands. Oh yeah I dont think they'd be going around ripping down posters but only they know the answer to that. Oh well I had a wonder night and I know most people did as well. Sorry for this extra long turbo hungover rant. - Sat, 19 Oct 2002 3:31pm

To the sour asshole who calls himself "rude boy"
People like you piss me off man, I mean ok we get your point you don't like Ska, ok ok nobody is forcing you too.
Nobody forced you to go to the show or listen to CFUVs Soundcheck, so whats your problem?
As someone who has played shows with ALL of these bands, including opening for Chris Murray and King Apparatus,( as Skanky Crackdown), at the icehouse in 1999 I can say this:
1. Although I don't know Chris Murray personally I have met him twice and I think he was a pleasent quiet man with a hell of a lot of talent.
2. One of the first shows I ever played on this rock was with the Kiltlifters and they were a nice professional, talented group of people then and I have a hard time believing that they have changed. Now I did not see this show, (working), but I doubt that they sucked. I also doubt that they pulled anybodys posters down.
3. All the members of those other bands you mentioned in your rant ( Hootiches, Blood Warmers, Los Furios),are nice guys who just like to play music and have fun. I don't see anything wrong with that.
Finally, please DON'T come to a KING BONG show, although we are not a SKA band per say we do like to have fun and play music and you seem to have something against that.
Smoke some BC weed and relax,

PS This site is vicious man, I posted our show, some friends put up some postings for fun and hype and all the negative assholes come out of the woodwork! This is supposed to be fun man. - Sat, 19 Oct 2002 6:49pm

Hey fuck that I don't dig ska either, but so fucking what. It's not as easy to play as it sounds, and it's true about the message ska has. Fucking rights if you don't like ska then what the fuck are you doing at their shows then anyways you baby? All I know is these cats like to get their drink on just like anyone else, and they support each others bands just as well as all my bros in punker bands, so who cares if it ain't your deal, they don't want you there then anyways. You probably should've stayed home and pulled it some more, sounds like you need it. Bitch. - Sat, 19 Oct 2002 8:39pm

Well...hehe...I hate to add my fuel to the fire, but that's what a message board is for, eh?

To address some points:

1. We Kiltlifters are not Nanaimo's best band, as far as I'm concerned... I always like to mention Wunderbread (for sheer fun factor and professionalism) and the Papillomas, even if they don't reside in the Hub City anymore.

2. The Kiltlifters have never broken up; only the rhythm section has changed from the original lineup. Keep the rumours going, though, it means people are talking! hehe..

3. I like Soundcheck, and the dudes who run the show are really cool. I give credit to anyone who volunteers their time to do something for community or cause. Apply to do your own show if you feel 'your' music isn't getting the airplay it deserves! (a radio show is pretty fun, too!)

4. Pietasters kick ass.

5. Dane Roberts kicks ass. I doubt 'Rude Boy's rants' will do anything for the ska scene as remotely close as to what Dane has done for ska, music, and positive vibes in Victoria the last few years...unbelievable. He's on my Xmas card list!

6. You guessed it, Chris Murray kicks ass. Not only have I been throughly entertained by both he and King Apparatus, he is a cool, *incredibly* intelligent guy and is a joy to talk to. It is also evident that he is fully into supporting the ska scene.

7. Murray the last member of K.A. still at it? I believe Mitch Girio and possibly Sam Tallo are still doing music, possibly ska. Mitch has produced a ton of ska albums.

8. Murray's tour schedule shows much more than Victoria and, well, Hamilton.

9. The point that irked me most - we did not and have NEVER used guerilla tactics in regards to postering. We are more than secure about our band to have to resort to crap like that. Besides, having done the classic tramp-around poster run in tons of cities tons of times, I am pretty sympathetic to everyone else that takes the time to do the same, foster knowledge of a scene, and get their band and gig known. Seeing gig posters everywhere, to me, represents a vibrant music community, something not reflected in all cities in this country. Victoria is amazing for the diversity of acts; the varying threads from punk, metal, ska, rock, hiphop, folk, etc. musicians on this message board proves it!

None of us live in Victoria, so I find it highly dubious you would have seen us there last weekend...hehe.

10. I like how you diss Chris Murray for being a 'white wanna be ska player', as compared to the Skatalites (sp), yet you mention the Bloodwarmers and Hoochies as being great ska bands to see, made up of, from what I can tell, pretty much all white guys. I'd like to know, then, your opinion of whether or not Bucket, Matt Collyer, Stephen Jackson, Bradley Nowell, Greg Crowe, Easy Big Fella, et al. are posers and wanna-bes.

11. Some of the best shows I've ever seen have been all ages shows... I was introduced to ska by seeing Pressure Cooker in 1994, and to this day that still stands as one of the top 3 live shows I have ever seen. Brilliant!

In conclusion...bring on the frosty beverages! - Sat, 19 Oct 2002 11:37pm
bubba that's great you dont like ska. but making fun of a local band who's trying their hardest to perform and entertain people is just down right mean. There are some bands I dont like out there but you know what, I still go to their shows sometimes to support them. And if KiltLifters didnt have any talent then why the hell are they so goddamn popular? I think someone is just jealous of not being in the spotlight. "everbodys got to learn and that station is generally pretty crappy...so what can you expect?"

In complete agreeance, sir. I imagine one day someone there will come to her or his senses, and we'll be listening to Sublime and Fishbone, two "musically challenging" and "artistically innovative" groups that have charted a new course for ska, and for humanity in general. I, for one, often end periods of ennui after realizing that so many of the younger generation, who could have been lost to something as vapid and "bo-o-o-ring" as books, have instead found marijuana usage, binge drinking, Ford Ranger trucks, and the soft, So-Cal grooves of Sublime.

jay - Mon, 21 Oct 2002 11:14am
CFUV FAN Dude have you ever listened to CFUV I'm sure both Sublime and Fishbone have been played lots of times by all kinds of different shows . Thats what I like about that station.....I don't think it's crappy...I like the kiltlifters too. - Mon, 21 Oct 2002 4:51pm
() Chris Murray has worked extensively with the Skatalites and other bands in the ska scene for a number of years. He doesn't care that he's not from Jamaica and is definetely not a wanna be or a wigger. What Chris Murray is is a incredibly talented musician (especially song writer and singer). Chris Murray is a musician that unites bands and promoters all over North America. Bands and promoters trust him and he is reason why many bands and promoters work in partnership with one another. Trust me, I know that members of the Bloodwarmers and Los Furios also like Chris Murray.

---- In fact a couple of the members from the Bloodwarmers would love to see him play this weekend @ Steamers also. I should know because I am good friends with one of them. ----

Almost all ska bands who are not from Jamaica don't try to pretend that they but they use the styles that developed there in their music. Those styles mixed with their own personal ones often make for an awesome sound.

CFUV 101.9FM is truly an awesome local radio station. They have programming that is unique to any other in Victoria. They have supported and will continue to support the bands you like (i.e The Bloodwarmers and Los Furios). Without them it would be a lot harder spreading the word about them.

SOUNDCHECK ON CFUV 101.9FM IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! (They have worked tirelessly in the past promoting a diverse range of bands in ska/surf and punk. They have also given a lot of promotion to the Bloodwarmers by the way...

SKANKSTER'S PARADISE IS AWESOME!!!!!!

Your serious lack of understanding about the ska scene in Victoria and probably about many other ones around North America is evident by your attempt to create discord in the ska music community. That is something that is not part of ska music culture. People in the scene are generally positive and want everyone to succeed. All the guys I know work to avoid conflict at all costs but you seem to want to do is create discord.

Your energy leaves much to be desired. But perhaps being at some more ska shows might brighten it up a bit. Chris Murray Combo w/Kia show would help just as the Bloodwarmers and Los Furios would too.

PS - I love the Kiltlifters! - Tue, 22 Oct 2002 1:06am
