korn on the knob KORN Frontman Blames Piracy For Last Album's Disappointing Sales - Mar. 15, 2003

KORN frontman Jonathan Davis believes significant sales of the band's last album, "Untouchables", were lost to piracy, and he vows to do something about it. "We got so fucked on our last one it leaked four months early," he says. "[Next] time there will be no CD going out before release. We're not going to give it to the label until a week before it comes out." "Untouchables", which has sold "only" 1.3 million units, according to SoundScan, is the worst-selling effort by the group, and its numbers are far below half of KORN's two previous full-length studio releases, 1999's "Issues" and 1998's "Follow the Leader".

According to Rolling Stone magazine, record labels are now taking unprecedented steps to protect their merchandise from being copied and distributed illegally. Perhaps no disc has been more heavily protected than LINKIN PARK's "Meteora", due March 25. None of the copies have left the custody of the band members, management and executives at Warner Bros. When the album was being mastered, the band had security guards on hand in the studio twenty-four hours a day to prevent any leaks. As tracks were finished, all earlier CD versions were destroyed. Press, radio programmers and retailers can only hear the album by going to the company's offices. The same level of security will likely be in place for new albums by METALLICA, LIMP BIZKIT, and STAIND.

I agree. fucking lazy rockstars. Kids that go through the effort of ripping a bands cd are the same kids who will still pay fucking ridiculous ticket prices to go to concerts. Im wondering if the lack of attendance at Korns live shows are because of mysterious pirated Korn concerts. Korn impersonators playing shows for free....must be.... - Sat, 15 Mar 2003 2:48pm

Ok, so the album doesn't leak before release day. That does not mean the numbers of sales will be higher. People will just rip the disc after they buy it and everyone will download it from the net regardless.
They "only" sold 1.3 million units of their last album. Man, life must be tough for these guys since the mp3 was invented. - Sat, 15 Mar 2003 3:34pm
Anonymous great one Wreaker! That was hilarious. Korn is looong due to disappear.

and so is 'Nu-Metal', hopefully. - Sat, 15 Mar 2003 3:47pm
Anonymous All they have to do is what massive attack did on there last disc and put copyright protection on it. It lets me play it on my computer but the second I try to rip it to itunes it jams up my computer making it really slow, and trying to stop it is a slow proscess aswell. - Sat, 15 Mar 2003 5:14pm

The record industry is doing what the dinosaurs did. Resisting change and it will render them exstinct. They will never stop people ripping cd's. Technology will always be one step ahead. Whether we like it or not we are lead by technology. All through history all that have resisted change have disappeared. Let er rip! - Sat, 15 Mar 2003 5:40pm

yeah nothing has changed, before record companies had cds, people would just tape records from a friend, or off the radio, didn't hear to much complaining then. They should stop complaining and blaming bad sales on piracy, and just realize that maybe Indie has been found again, and not all of their mainstream bands have anything going for them anymore. - Sat, 15 Mar 2003 7:31pm

Anonymous korn is crap for lil 13 year old fools who actually think its cool to whine about being abused by daddy or whatever
korn has just capitalized on that just like the bizkits and the linkin parks they are folowing a formula
i was at the foundations forum in LA in 94 and they were the big deal there (the next big thing)
i didnt have the heart to tell my band mates where metal was going....fuk KORN and thier silly lil pissy singer and cunt faced guitar players .....i was watching new metal videos recently on muchmusic USA which has a show called uranium which (by the way) plays DAILY!! and what all the nu metal bands were missing is what i like about metal in the first place....riffs that fuckin stay in your head....
remember Creeping death? or about 2 dozen other metallica songs of yesteryear....how about slayers Post Mortem or that riff in the middle of AOD?....and lets not forget sabbath....we all owe it to them for metals beginnings....
think im living in the past?
damn fuckin rights man....today doesnt hold alot for me as far as metal...except for Down and SOAD and maybe a handful of others...(ok ill stop my ranting)
cheers CC - Sat, 15 Mar 2003 8:43pm

O.K. I'll try. I don't think that the "piracy" has made things much worse for any musicians who are willing to work hard. Every album is supposed to be a work of art, not grounds for a media circus. I don't know much about korn or other nu metal groups but I know that they still sell out when they play most places. People just have the freedom to decide for themselves now whether or not an album is good. Sorry korn. - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 1:27am
