Basterd Son Of A Basterd Son Uhh ya, and hopefully you dont forget 95% of the bands in this city that are better then the 5% who particiapted last year.. Oh wait.. what if these good bands dont have enough friends with time or care to nominate? Guess they are shit out of luck for being so nonchalant.

I nominate the Dayglos for being the local band that has done more, put out more albums, toured to more places, and have more fans internationally than any other band in Victoria. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 7:05pm

If you really want to be involved and don't think anyone else will nominate you than nominate yourselves. And besides, I think the importance of this event is not that there are awards given out - it's that there's another event that will draw attention to the Victoria music scene. Is that so bad? Just let the people be that want to be a part of it and maybe they won't bitch about the things you are involved in that they find disagreeable. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 7:11pm
Basterd daughter of an ageless Ent So if I go and nominate myself I might get noticed? That is crap. Why doesnt MPower note the achivements of local bands ( that have them.. ). Basically, a band that has played 10 shows and happens to have 200 giggling friends will do better then a band that has played 100's or 1000's of gigs and dont walk around with an ego thinking they are super worthy of this award. IE: the band I mentioned above, The Dayglos.. do you think THEY care if they get an award.. I doubt it. Do you think they would go around and pester their freinds and relatives and coworkers to nominate them? I doubt it. Yet they still have a larger fan base than almost any other band on Vancouver Island. Thye have toured, Europe, Australia, USA, Canada, soon to be back in Europe AGAIN, they have sold more albums than almost every band in Victoria combined, and are easily the longest lived band to ever come out of Victoria. They should get nominated without even trying! They have put Victoria on the international punk rock map. Punkers and metalers alike worldwide have heard of them. They have even been in Rolling Stone magazine.. Nancy Reagan herself had them barred from the USA.. Now thats an achievement!!!

Im not trying to go to bat for the Dayglos, in fact I dont really even like them anymore, but point is fact. MPower is bullshit the way it is run now. Ive been in this city 20 years, and I hadnt even heard of half the bands nominated last year!! - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 7:21pm
Matte Black Basterd Son Of A Basterd Son will keep bitching and whining about last year until the deadline passes and then he'll start complaining that no "good" bands got nominated this year either. Go to Long & McQuade and fill out the form if you're so worried about it. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 7:24pm
Basterd is back Oh ya, ok. Why dont I. I did last year, but nobody I nominated got noticed. MPower is a flop. Admit it, and rework it. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 7:31pm
Anonymous "Basterd daughter of an ageless Ent - So if I go and nominate myself I might get noticed? That is crap. Why doesnt MPower note the achivements of local bands ( that have them.. )."

Because, like I already said above, it's not about awards. The only people that really make awards shows, battle of the bands, etc. ugly are the ones on the sidelines, not the participants. If you don't believe me, participate in such an event and see the positive and supportive attitudes of the people involved and than come on here and watch the poo fly back and forth between people that weren't involved. Go nominate yourself and have fun. It has everything to do with participating and nothing to do with winning. This sort of event does far more for the entire scene than it does for anyone one particular group involved. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 7:32pm
Mr. Mug Basterd Son/Daughter:

Your statement: "They should get nominated without even trying!"

This is where you make your mistake. This is not a business where you can get anywhere by "without even trying." If that's you're attitude, what do you expect? You get back what you put in! If a band feels they're too established or successful to participate, then that is certainly their choice to put themselves on a pedestal. Maybe it's not such a bad thing that many of the acts are, as you say, "unheard of." What's wrong with exposing quality acts who wouldn't otherwise see the light of day? At least those unheard-of acts ARE trying! And, as far as your complaint about bands with a following getting more votes - Creating a following for your act IS part of the skill of becoming a successful act. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 7:34pm
Basterd is still alive Well I would go nominate meself but I sound like a cat when I sing, and I cant play an instrument. My point is, in an awards show, it shouldnt be up to the bands to nominate themselves, but a panel of judges that make up an ecclectic mix of the local scene. It shouldnt be about how savvy and caring your fans are, but about what the band has done for itself, and in the city and abroad. What if a band were on tour and couldnt nominate themselves, even though they were doing more as a band then any others in the city? What about the mark atkinson trio who tour all the time? Gogo is cool, he rocks, he is quite succesful, but there are others. This city has depth and style, and lots of it.. the MPower's should be used to show appreciation to the scene as a whole. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 8:17pm
Raymond Juice From what I've heard so far, "Basterd" the only one who thinks it's not a celebration of the whole scene. Plus, I've already seen two M*POWER posts on here stating that there IS a music industry jury in addition to the public vote. Sounds like they're trying to accommodate everyone's opinion, which is a good thing, isn't it? - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 8:26pm
Matte Black If you think that there is some all seeing eye floating around making sure that all bands achievements, naughty or nice are being put down on a big Santa Claus-like list and prizes are given out for "artistic merit" and "musicianship" then you are seriously deluded. Even actors take out billboards in Hollywood promoting themselves for the Academy Awards. It's hard for a band or musician to self-promote, but if you wanna succeed who's gonna do it for ya, yer mom? - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 9:10pm
S.V. I think a key point being missed is that this event is intended to highlight and promote unsigned, independant bands...not "rockstars" like the Dayglos (or NoMeansNo for that matter, who in my opinion put Victoria on the map :) - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 9:15am
