OK, here's one for you Live Vickers:

Even gone to a show to see the headliners, but instead the opening band totally kicked the shit out of them?

I remember hearing a story about Flash Bastard once. It's probably not true but it sounds good. They supposedly were booted off a Motley Crue tour for partying harder than Vince and the boys, playing better, and generally making the Crue look second-rate.

Can't say I've ever seen an opener blow the headliner out of the water...You? - Wed, 9 Jan 2008 9:08pm Edited: Wed, 9 Jan 2008 9:08pm

I saw the Foo Fighters open for the Chili Peppers, probably about five or six years ago and totally out performed them...

Similar situation I went to this global hunger benefit show in Seattle and Pearl Jam was opening for R.E.M. and half way though R.E.M.'s set Key Arena was half empty....

REM sucked the lights out...

There's been some other times that I can't remember off the top of my head... - Wed, 9 Jan 2008 10:12pm

I saw No Doubt open for the band Rusty in 1994 at the Town Pump or someplace like that, just before they got huge. I was too young to get in too. - Thu, 10 Jan 2008 9:14am

Keeping with the CC theme, Abuse kicked the shit out of Cannibal Corpse at the Burnaby show a few years back too.

"headliner" is a dead concept though, the middle slot is the best.

Holy Fuck opened for Wolf Parade at Sugar back in September.

totally i felt a way better set than Wolf Parade's

Fond of Tigers also played 2nd before Chad VanGaalen
also another band that i found played the best that night
Chad was still great though...

Well in both those cases i hadn't listened to those bands that much at all so didn't know what to expect..

but i agree with the concept of "headliner" being dead.
or just something that doesn't work outside of arena rock probably more likely - Thu, 10 Jan 2008 10:25am

The Unicorns at Sugar just a little while back. Killed Metric and Hot Hot Heat. Left just a few songs into Hot Hot Heat (after waiting an hour an a half for them to set up...). - Thu, 10 Jan 2008 10:26am

I saw Danko Jones' debut at The Limit in 1999, when he opened for the Real McKenzies Not that the headliner was anything great (even at its peak) but he completely destroyed them. One of the few times I've seen an opening act play so good the crowd demanded an encore. Of course, the McKenzies didn't allow it. But it was amazing. - Thu, 10 Jan 2008 12:26pm Edited: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 12:27pm

First one to mind for this old codger is Procol Harum who blew a pretty decent Supertramp off the Memorial Arena stage when the 'tramp were at their height and PH were almost done. - Thu, 10 Jan 2008 12:57pm

I'm not sure if I should post my real name here - local politics and all, but when I was a kid I thought Chixdiggit totally stole the show from 54-40 at the Curling Club.

Also Joran (French Canadian Cellist/vocalist) was WAY better than Sarah Slean at Central B&G a couple of years ago. Joran was solo, SS had a full band, but could not compete.

The Locust actually stole they show when they backed up the Dillinger Escape Plan about two years ago at Mesa Luna. One of the most cathartic, awesomely messed-up gigs I'll probably ever see. - Fri, 11 Jan 2008 9:13am

Dreamboat opening for The Russian Futurists at Logan's. Doors at 8, watch that pudgy ginger prick eat a steak for three hours, then Dreamboat flailed around for a little bit and the Futurists played every song they'd ever used as stuffing to fill the empty minutes on an album. Seriously, if you're a balding redheaded dude with a potbelly, don't greet an irritated crowd with 'sup'. - Fri, 11 Jan 2008 9:41am

^ I agree, that was brilliant. And in 2004!
(oops, didn't post in time, I mean the Locust)

There are a ton of these.. Slayer most times I saw them as openers. And I think Misery Index opened for Neuraxis the night they played here. - Fri, 11 Jan 2008 9:53am Edited: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 9:53am

Last year or the year before, I saw Horde of Anachron open up for Cryptopsy at Sugar and totally out played them (Go local bands!!!). I can't even listen to Cryptopsy anymore they sucked so bad that night. Couple of months later (again at Sugar) Suffocation opened for Fear Factory and was by far the better act. I think Burton Cummings is losing his touch.

I saw Sepultura wipe the floor with Pantera on the joint "Far Beyond Driven" "Chaos A.D." tour at the Pacific Coliseum in '94. Prong played first, which was alright as well. Of course Phil was far beyond hammered, so it tends to have an effect on ones' overall impression of the performance. Dimebag slayed of course, but Sepultura was just that much better. In my worthless opinion..... - Fri, 11 Jan 2008 5:29pm Edited: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 5:31pm

I remember seeing that Pantera gig and yes Sepultura kicked Pantera in the ass for sure. They blew me away. Wasn't that gig at the PNE Forum, though?

Much as I love Iron Maiden and fearing some abuse from some Maiden 'eads....I though Guns'N"Roses opening for Maiden back in '88 (Seventh Son tour) beat 'em (except of course when Maiden played 'Prisoner' - at that point I creamed my jeans and I almost forgot GNR). - Wed, 23 Jan 2008 1:08pm

Khold dominated when I saw them open for Satyricon in '03. So much drive, catchiness and pure black energy...I think everyone in the venue agreed. They slayed.

Satyricon took about over an hour to show up on stage, the performance was bland, Satyr was drunk and obnoxious, and because the band took their sweet ass time, a third of the crowd (including me) had to leave 4 songs into their set to catch the last train back home. - Thu, 24 Jan 2008 12:26pm Edited: Thu, 24 Jan 2008 12:27pm

Oh yeah, Mastodon opening for Slayer a couple years back. Actually I think I've seen Slayer about 6 or 7 times &haven't been impressed once. The openers have been the reason I've gone.

Also At The Gates opening for Napalm as well. Their sound was identical to "Slaughter of the Soul".

Slipknot at Ozzfest '99.

Candiria at the Icehouse a buncha years back. Although I wouldn't say they stole the show as Cryptopsy was awesome as well, just an honorable mention. - Thu, 24 Jan 2008 12:58pm Edited: Thu, 24 Jan 2008 1:03pm

Seaweed, Green Day, Bad Religion @ 86th St 1994

Seaweed slayed, then Green Day came out and stole the show. Bad Religion were good, but nothing on GD. Billie Joe had the crowd spit on him. I'm not shitting you he had it dripping off his face and guitar. Seriously nasty. - Thu, 24 Jan 2008 8:16pm

Tool on the small stage at lolapalooza 93 was definitly the act to see on that tour. I also agree with whoever said Slipknot at ozzfest 99, and for sure what RB said about sepultura and pantera, which was at the FORUM not the coliseum. - Mon, 4 Feb 2008 8:39pm Edited: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 8:40pm

That show made me despise Tool even to this day. Terrible. Funny that I still hold a grudge.

As for local openers that stole the show, Switchblade Valentines have stolen the few shows that I've seen them play. The fact that they open for anybody is ass backwards. - Mon, 18 Feb 2008 5:27pm Edited: Mon, 18 Feb 2008 5:32pm

Any special reason for that? Possibly because they were rad and you wanted to be them. Either way a little bit petty and unusual to "hold a grudge" against a band for no reason. Did they kick your dog? or perhaps bang yer granny? - Wed, 20 Feb 2008 5:51pm
