Yeah, yeah, I know it's a bit early, but the metalheads have already got the jump on the rest of us with their "Best of..." lists, and we can't let those satanists get too far ahead. So here goes:

Best Shows Yet to Happen in 2007: No contest. Joel Plaskett for two glorious nights at Lucky in late-December. A real treat. Here's hoping for two completely different setlists. Great way to finish off the year.

Best Show That Didn't Happen in 2007: The Queers at Lucky a few months back. Tough break for the old punkers in this town. My night was salvaged, though, by wandering down to Legends that same night to catch Widemouth Mason.

Best Shows of 2007 That Did Happen:

1. Social Distortion at the Curling Club. In my opinion, there can be no debate about this. So don't start.

2. Weakerthans at Sugar. It takes a special band to get someone feeling nostalgic about living in Winnipeg, for fuck sakes. But these guys do it for me. Relatively simple scenarios in their songs like the bus driver who drives his route all day regretting a lost relationship, some dude sitting in a curling rink all night instead of being at home with his lady, and a cat that abandoned its boozer owner - all of these plots somehow remind me of my years on the prairies and get me totally homesick. Great, great band, and a great show.

3. Bouncing Souls at Legends. The show was made even better by The Loved Ones, also on the bill.

4. Wednesday Night Heros at Logans. Small crowd and a short set, but the WNH proved that they're the best thing to come out of Edmonton since, uh,..., well, they're the best thing to come out of Edmonton.

5. Tragically Hip, two shows at the Arena. Better crowd the first night, but a better setlist the second. Too much money to go to both shows, but I don't drink much, don't smoke, don't do drugs (other than my rather alarming caffeine addiction), so I thought I could justify it. No regrets, although seeing them a few years back in the cosy confines of the Royal Theatre was much nicer.

Anyway, my two bits... - Tue, 13 Nov 2007 7:47am

Graf Orlock, Black Lotus' first show, that all ages show with The Hoosegow in January (and numerous other all-agers of course), probably several more I can't think of right now.

Though if non-Victoria shows count I'll obviously have to be a dick and say Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany and Hellfest in France were pretty fucking sick. - Thu, 15 Nov 2007 12:11am

^ Yep, Turbonegro's gotta be in my top 3.

Apart from that I can't decide. Some of those were awesome, but they just weren't *MY* favorites of the year - Fond of Tigers, Tyrants Blood, SNFU, Dark Tranquility...
And I've seen a ton of great local metal shows featuring my favorites, but I can't narrow it down to one in particular. - Sat, 24 Nov 2007 8:18pm

This'll sound wierd, but the Keg Killers/Dry Fisted show at the Cobalt was up there for me. The bands were on top of their game that night and it was a jaks reunion - I always try to avoid those. I've told people that sure enough It was everything from scary to charming to offensive to impressive to infuriating to disgusting (all cuz of the crowd, of course).

There's not enough around that feels like real adrenalized punk anymore. Usually I'm bored but those guys were playing as tight as the metal I'm used to and the bar was used as it was meant to be - flying chairs, beers, bodies, firecrackers, the works. It was probably a slow night in their eyes, but to me it was big.
Also refreshing to see people at least as tough as Wendy up on her stage for a change, haha. - Sat, 24 Nov 2007 8:22pm Edited: Sat, 24 Nov 2007 8:24pm

Covers for a cause with Jets Overhead, Vince V, Immaculate Machine would also be my fav of the year. It was one of the only shows I went to, but I still think it is most likely the best show I have ever been to in this city, and the pics turned out sweet.

In fact, I think the other show was Tegan and Sarah, and they were dam good too...wait I'm not meant to say that on a board like this :) - Thu, 29 Nov 2007 10:38am

Deftones- Victoria Curling Club

Slamming around in the stifling heat, with a tear in my eyes, in the darkness, two hours after my 12 year old, giant wolfdawg died. Howling with the crowd in between songs. It was like a gift from God

I hope I didn't hurt anyone to bad when they played this-

Ladyhawk, Constantines, Spoon, Wolf Parade, and Wintersleep were all great shows that I saw @ Sugar in 2007. Although the percentage of douches at the last Wintersleep show has increased dramatically since previous times that I've seen them...

TV on the Radio at the Commodore was neato.

Immaculate Machine and New Pornos at McPherson was great too.

Final Fantasy at Alix Goolden was different than anything else I saw this year, and was pretty amazing. - Tue, 22 Jan 2008 2:19pm
