Apparently, a disturbing violent incident occurred last night at an all ages show at Big Fernwood (FCC), resulting in numerous people being hospitalised. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

In the wake of this tragic event, staff of the FCC are trying to piece together information about the incident and any events leading up to it. If you have any information please contact FNRG’s Executive Director Roberta Martell at 888-8938. She asked that I post her contact info and this thread on LiveVic.

Questions being asked are: If the perpetrators are connected to the scene or not? and What, if anything, could be done to prevent such incidents in the future?

The FCC are highly concerned that all ages shows remain safe for all, and want to do everything possible to ensure this.

It is anticipated that the reputation of the overall scene will suffer greatly from last night's event. There will likely be a lot of media attention regarding this incident in the days to come. Anyone willing to lend their voice in support of the all ages scene, are asked to connect with Roberta (888-8938) as she prepares the deal with questions from the media.

Roberta would especially like to speak with promoters that have hosted shows at FCC in the past. It is hoped that this isolated incident will not adversely affect the future of all ages shows in our community, nor give the general public the impression that the “scene” is steeped in violence. This is definitely a time for the scene to come together and support each other.

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

What a lovely way to start the day. Wasn't sure when I woke up this morning, after S.V. told me about all of this, if it was apr 1st or not. My thoughts are with everyone at the show as it's not just going to be the victims that are severely traumatized over this. Anyone involved or witnessing this is going to need counseling services bigtime. - Sat, 27 Oct 2007 10:57am

i wasnt there for the incident, but i walked passed them and they called me a bitch as i walked by.
harmless looking gangster teenagers..
a few looked around 16 or 17.
one big fat native guy..
around 4 girls 6 or so guys..
not in the scene at all..
seemed like they were there just because they saw or heard people there, and decided it was a place to get drunk. no one i knew at the show knew who they were. they were just looking to start shit..
it isnt bad enough we cant walk around downtown near bars without being hassled or attacked by people like this. these shows are for young people to go and enjoy themselves. its a fun thing to do where they arent getting into trouble...and now because of these people, the people who start shit for fun,
kids might not be able to go to shows anymore. it hurts the bands, it hurts the kids, and it hurts the community...it absolutely kills me that good friends of mine are going to get stabbed in the face just to help other people. it was over nothing.. someone thought someone pushed someone..and nothing even happened. its not even just fighting, its not even like when someones asking for it, ang gets hit. these people did nothing, and could have died.
senseless.
its scary knowing little is going to be resolved about this, and scarier that kids need to be fearful or getting stabbed near a neighbourhood community center. i spent a very long time cleaning up a frightening amount of blood, in a daycare washroom after the incident.
this is all i know.
i wish i knew who these people were. - Sat, 27 Oct 2007 1:45pm

good to know at least the people starting trouble were not connected to the show. so that is a good start.

Like Trevor said, the Police need to be called right away when uninvited guests show up.

Maybe a solution could be to let the police know of the shows before hand and invite them to drive by a couple times in the evening. Sucks for all the kids that like to get drunk in the parking lot but a small price to pay for safety. - Sat, 27 Oct 2007 6:17pm

Heather said: "I hope those kids that did that get whats coming to them."

-- it is important to remember that kids like those described above like violence. Fighting them is what they want. They'll be bragging about the kids the knifed for days.

-- despite what they say... Kids jail sucks (they brag about that too... but it really does suck for a sixteen year old to have their freedom taken, I know, I worked at a foster care home for troubled youngsters, they hate jail). Just call the police and they'll take them to the kids jail for a bit to calm down. - Sat, 27 Oct 2007 6:21pm

I was there, there's another thread about htis in "show reviews"... I'll call this lady as soon as I can. I actually know one of the guys who was part of the group, but I doubt he was involved in the actual violence. The guys were there earlier, tried to start shit with a few of us, left, came back, did it with more people, left, then were hanging out by the top of the venue. Calling the cops gets the show in shit, once there was an actual fight that broke out, the cops did get called, but before it seemed like empty threats. Anyways, I'll go call this woman... - Sat, 27 Oct 2007 7:37pm

Wow, I was going to go to that show but wasn't able to make it. This sounds messed up. Anyway I was reading all the news reports on CFAX and Times Colonist and so far they have not used the words "concert" or "rock show" or anything like that in reporting the event - this could be good news. I think this means they know that the stabbings were not necessarily related to the show or its promoters, especially since it happened by and large after the show. I think to cover their butts they did not make the wrong assumption that it was caused BY the concert, that way they won't have to print a retraction later.

Speedy recovery to the ones who were hurt.

Every time I go to an all ages show these days, I feel like an old veteran of the scene (regardless of whether that's realistic). I feel a certain amount of responsibility to do what I can to make the show go down smooth, even if I don't really have anything to do with organizing it. As such, I feel a bit bad that I had left before this shit went down, that I wasn't there to help in any way I could.

Every time something stupid happens at an all-ages show, there's a strong response from veterans. Usually a lot of people saying we should look out for the kids when we're at shows.

It might be time to do that in some kind of semi-organized way. An informal group of sensible veterans that look out for the kids and the show. Somebody people know they can go to if they're getting a hassle, or anything.

I also think keeping the police on our side is a very good idea. If they get called to a show for some kind of disturbance, and they don't know anything about it, it looks like a bunch of punk kids starting trouble. If they know about the show, and have a good relationship with the promoters, it looks like a bunch of people looking to have a good time, with a couple douchebags starting trouble.

There's a constructive way to handle this. Let's find it. - Sun, 28 Oct 2007 11:46pm

The papers were just working with the info they had.
6 people were arrested, as far as i know there was only 3 of them who were involved in the actual assaulting.
So the other 3 being released makes sense. the reports can't say for sure whether or not that the police are pressing charges because the police haven't released an official statement. - Mon, 29 Oct 2007 1:10pm

Hi all,

Here's the latest as reported on CFAX's website.

FOUR ARRESTED IN FERNWOOD KNIFE FIGHT CASE
Oct 29, 2007

VICTORIA POLICE ARE CONFIDENT THEY HAVE ARRESTED ALL THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR TOUCHING OFF A VICIOUS BRAWL IN FERNWOOD FRIDAY NIGHT.

DEPARTMENT SPOKESPERSON SGT. GRANT HAMILTON SAYS SOME OF THE OFFICERS ARRIVING AT THE FERNWOOD COMMUNITY CENTRE FOUND THE MOST CHAOTIC SCENE THEY'D EVER WITNESSED.

"CLOSE TO TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE ON THE STREET," SAYS HAMILTON, "SOME STILL FIGHTING, SOME RUNNING AWAY, SEVERAL BLEEDING FROM ASSAULTS AND KNIFE WOUNDS."

SGT. HAMILTON SAYS A BOX CUTTER WAS USED TO INFLICT SLASH WOUNDS ON UP TO SEVEN PEOPLE.

"[ONE YOUNG MAN] SUFFERED SHOULDER LACERATIONS AND A HEAD WOUND. HE'D BEEN SLASHED IN THE BACK AND STRUCK IN THE HEAD FROM BEHIND WITH A SKATEBOARD WITH NAILS PROTRUDING FROM IT.

"A 19-YEAR-OLD MALE HAD A LARGE LACERATION TO HIS HEAD REQUIRING TWELVE STITCHES, AND ALSO DEFENSIVE WOUNDS ON HIS HANDS REQUIRING ELEVEN STITCHES.

"A 22-YEAR-OLD MALE HAD A SLASH WOUND ON THE LEFT SIDE OF HIS NECK WHICH RAN FROM HIS JAW ALL THE WAY DOWN INTO HIS NECK."

THE SEVEN INJURED WERE TAKEN TO ROYAL JUBILEE AND VICTORIA GENERAL HOSPITALS -- SEVERAL OF THE VICTIMS WILL HAVE PERMANENT SCARRING AND DISFIGURATION.

FOUR PEOPLE -- TWO BOYS AND TWO GIRLS, ALL AGES 16 AND 17 -- ARE FACING ASSAULT AND WEAPONS CHARGES.

THREE WERE ARRESTED RIGHT AFTER THE INCIDENT -- A FOURTH WAS ARRESTED SUNDAY.

SGT. HAMILTON SAYS IT APPEARS THE FOUR CAME FROM ELSEWHERE IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AS A PUNK ROCK SHOW WAS DRAWING TO A CLOSE, LOOKING TO START TROUBLE.

ROBERTA MARTEL HEADS UP THE FERNWOOD NEIGHBOURHOOD RESOURCE GROUP, WHICH REGULARLY RENTS OUT THE COMMUNITY CENTRE FOR ALL-AGES MUSICAL PERFORMANCES.

MARTEL SAYS FRIDAY NIGHT'S ATTACK WAS HIGHLY UNUSUAL.

"FERNWOOD HAS DECADES OF HISTORY PROVIDING SAFE AND SECURE ALL-AGES SHOWS. THIS IS SHOCKING.

"IT DIDN'T HAPPEN AT THE SHOW, IT WAS OUT ON THE STREET. LUCKILY, THE CENTRE WAS OPEN AND THE KIDS WERE ABLE TO COME BACK INSIDE AND GET FIRST AID ATTENTION."

THE TROUBLE DID START ON THE STREET OUT FRONT OF THE BUILDING, BUT ALSO ON COMMUNITY CENTRE PROPERTY -- A BASKETBALL COURT BEHIND THE BUILDING.

MARTEL DOESN'T WANT THE PUNK ROCK SCENE TO GET A BLACK EYE FROM THE INCIDENT -- SHE CALLS THE KIDS INVOLVED IN THAT SCENE PACIFISTS IN DIFFERENT OUTFITS.

"WE'RE REALLY IN SUPPORT OF THE PUNK ROCK SCENE. WE HAVEN'T HAD AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS BEFORE. THIS IS A GREAT GROUP OF KIDS DOING GREAT WORK. IT'S KIND OF LIKE JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN DIFFERENT COSTUMES -- THEY PUT ON SHOWS, BRING TOGETHER BANDS, DO COMMUNICATIONS AND PROMOTIONS, MONEY-HANDLING AND SECURITY."

A SIMILAR SHOW SET FOR SATURDAY WAS CANCELLED -- MARTEL SAYS THE FERNWOOD N.R.G. WILL BE GETTING TOGETHER WITH SHOW PROMOTERS AND OTHERS IN THE PUNK SCENE SOMETIME THIS WEEK TO FIGURE OUT WHAT CAN BE DONE TO KEEP THE SHOWS HAPPENING SAFELY.

I am relieved that the news media has not condemned the all ages music scene in the wake of Friday's incident--the last thing this community deserves is a doubled blow to its already compromised existence (by this I mean the lack of available venues at this time).

I agree with Ryan/ KnifeGhost about feeling a sense of responsibility for the people in the all ages scene. Growing up in Victoria, I really appreciated that there were shows I could attend throughout junior high especially. It's because of my early experiences going to shows at the GOR, Little Fernwood, Burnside, the Downtown Community Centre, and the FCC that I've tried to give back to this community by putting on all-ages shows myself, and I know that the motivations of many others are similar to mine.

That being said, I also want to acknowledge what Tyler said. Yeah, it is a risk for promoters to put on an all-ages show. Looking for venues, investing your own cash in the show, and taking security (of the people attending and the venue itself) into consideration. People should help out however they can. Don't let this one episode scare you off. - Mon, 29 Oct 2007 9:01pm

I think Big Fernwood made a pretty strong point about the incident being completely seperate from the show. It occured outside, between people who weren't even participating with the venue whatsoever (unless you count standing outside, drunk, picking fights participating).

What troubles me is the reprecussions that this might have for the venue itself. I love Big Fernwood and had myself booked it out for a weekend in December, but my event has now been cancelled, along with everyone elses, and the venue is being scrutinized for events that were out of their hands. - Mon, 29 Oct 2007 9:20pm

First, Roberta, thanks for your support. It isn't often that people from outside the scene, especially "responsible adults", are willing to speak out in favour of the scene, especially in such glowing terms.

And Salt, you're right about Tyler being right. The biggest barrier to all-ages shows (other than having few suitable venues) is lack of willing promoters. Bars are straight-forward -- they're open anyways, they're making their money on booze anyways, so the financial burden isn't really on the promoters. In almost all cases, unless a _serious_ sponsor is involved, all-ages shows are funded almost entirely out of pocket. Somebody, usually one individual person who often doesn't have a lot of money to begin with, has to put up the cash. And shoulder the responsibility for how the show goes down.

So, while I'm indulging in dreaming about an ideal world, wouldn't it be great if some venues (hell, even _a_ venue) that had a suitable stage and sound system (the Multicultural Center is good for that, but cost a fortune) and didn't require a ton of investment by promoters? (The 50/50 was good for that, but, well, they shut down twice and struggled while they were open.)

And all ages club, kind of a coffee shop/hangout/venue/youth center, would be awesome. Open one isn't my calling, but I'll help anybody who wants to do it in any way I can. - Tue, 30 Oct 2007 12:18am

If there is a positive it is the perception portrayed by the media that the incidences were very seperate from the show itself. I'm still shaking my head after having read the accounts of this from Friday on this site.

I sincerely hope it doesn't deter folks from putting on all ages gigs. Believe me, I (along with scores of others I'm sure) sincerely appreciate the work involved with this. It is folks like yourselves that provided a little 17 year old shit like me the chance to see bands like NoMeansNo, Green Day, etc...for that, thank you. - Tue, 30 Oct 2007 8:27am

It's been mentioned before, but I think the time has finally come to police ourselves seriously. We need to figure out a way to organize a security team of older members of the scene who would come and work the all ages shows.

I am more than willing to give some time and effort to this, but there needs to be enough people so that there is a rotating staff of people and not the same four or five people having to go to every show.

There are plenty of us in the scene that are in our 20's, 30's and 40's who I'm sure wouldn't mind help keep all agers moving smoothly. Who's with me? - Tue, 30 Oct 2007 9:27am

Hi there!

My name is Jacqueline and I work at the Fernwood NRG aka Big fernwood. Roberta Martell and I are working together to plan a meeting with promoters, staff, as well as all people wanting to attend that are involved with the all ages show scene. We would like to discuss and brainstorm ideas on how to keep this scene alive at our centre and increase saftey at these shows. If you would like to attend please email me at [email protected] or [email protected]. We also would like to state again that this incident had nothing to do with the event itself, and sadly it was people attending the event that were injured in this RANDOM violent attack. - Tue, 30 Oct 2007 11:26am

Yeah I should note that my initial post was very early in the game, as info about the incident was still emerging. It's understood now that the trouble started outside the FCC.

It's good to see people wanting to step up and help with security. We had a little gig committee going for a while, but over time it dissipated. At least something good will come out of this... a catalyst to get more people involved in AA shows.

The idea is to have a few people who are at the shows in a behind the scenes capacity. Just to keep an eye on things and help the promoter keep things cool if problems arise. - Thu, 1 Nov 2007 10:29pm
