Satelite + benefit to only 3 provinces + cost = waste. It's obvious some of you are completely clueless on what a waste of money investing in satelite 'broadband' is. Its a far cry to even think we "need" satellite broadband... and its an even further piss off that it only services 3 of our provinces. How could anyone be OK with this? I want my access too motherfuckers!!! And why the FUCK should Quebec be on the first list for satellite broadband access for Canada? | Bryn User Info... | Seriously folks, if we want to move past the many many social problems that infect the far north, access to broadband internet is essential to provide education and communication that is on a par with more privileged regions. Plus with the global warming opening new shipping routes, Canada's sovereignty in the far north is going to be a huge issue in the next decades, which, unusually for politicians, the current regime is actually showing some forward thinking regarding. - Wed, 29 Aug 2007 1:51am | ||

Or maybe the other provinces realised that it was much cheaper to lay fibre, for true broadband, than it is to rely on technology that should be on it's way out. PIF: It cost Shaw/Telus, since they partnered in BC, about 18-20 million to lay hundreds of miles of fibre back in the mid-late 90's. A far better investment that both companies benefit from. Satelite is going to be nothing but a headache up north due to signal levels dropping in bad weather conditions, which they get a lot of. - Wed, 29 Aug 2007 10:56am | ||

There was a time when the federal government invested (or wasted) millions of dollars building a railway out to a few thousand people clinging to the far west of this country. That investment paid off, and I am sure this one will be good to givenn time. As for how it will benifit northern communities... It isn't "keeping up with the Jones'" that the internet will bring that will make life better for people of the North, it is the access to information and the ability to attract Jones' to come and live and work in certain communities. We take for granted here that we can hop on LiveVictoria and shoot off our mouths then download music and read the latest news... that is not the case fopr someone in remote Manitoba. As the article said, it will be important for education which benifits future generations of Canadians and it will benifit health care thus SAVING money for taxpayers. As for this program benifiting only three provinces and not *worthy* of taxpayer money, I don't understand your logic. Ontario is the Largest Province and Quebec is second, so right there it touches over half of ALL Canadians. 20 million dollars in the scope of a federal budget is almost meaningless. The Federal government doles out money for regional projects across the country. Should ALL those projects be scraped? If this project does have a benifit for health care and education then it does infact target what you claim the govenrment should be funding and thus saving ALL Canadian tax money... so then, what is the arguement? As Bryn said, the North is increasingly becoming important for it resources. By investing a small amount of money now, Canada as a whole will be able to profit from the productivity of the North... thus making this paltry investment of 20 million dollars a bargin. - Thu, 30 Aug 2007 11:44am | ||
| Chopper User Info... | Considering the resources that are known in the northern reaches of the country are allready spoken for (athabasca tar sands and diamonds), and the government allready gains taxes from those working in those industries. How is investing in outdated and overpriced technology bettering those industries? If we're talking forestry as well, that's an industry that's been entrenched in the north for decades now. We seem to be straying from what was my original point, the technology and the cost and who it benefits. The technology is oudated, the cost is similar, or more than what Shaw/Telus paid to lay hundreds of miles of fibre lines accross this province. Satelite internet, because it's NOT broadband, is going to be nothing but problematic in northern climates. They'll be better off with a dialup connection than on satelite, especially in the fall/winter/spring. So where's the benefit if you can't even get proper signal strength to use it 3/4 of the year? That's why it's wasteful, especially when there's better technology out there that can be aquired and implemented at similar costs. As for the provinces themselves and the size. Lose 90% of both of the provinces you stated because theres probably about 10% of those populations living in far north of those provinces. | Jeremy Baker User Info... | too be 100% honest with you.. i don't about the technology, so if it is outated like you said... then your right, we shoul dbe putting in what's best for future growth. I am always for investing in rural Canada. The strength of the cities comes from the resource gathering from the north. Just because few people live in northern Manitoba doesn't mean that the effects of progress there won't reverberate to Winnipeg and then to points beyond. The government is investing billions in infestructure in Vancouver. Does that affect me oin Victoria? Maybe not directly, but if the gears of industry move all the more smoothly and cars and trains move effiently then that benifits the the whole Province benifits. (yeesh... but maybe not the air that we breathe, good thing the winds blow that shit away from us here on our little Island and east out over.... oh oh... the farms and the food we eat! | Chopper User Info... | That's what pissed me off the most Jeremy, the waste of using such asinine technology that has these issues and has been known about since it's inception. That's why you don't see market saturation in regards to satelite internet, nobody wants it. The latency alone (1sec, when anything over 250ms causes issues), makes it a waste as well. But that's in perfect conditions. Storms, be they thunder or electrical, degrade the signal to the point that signal strength drops to unusable rates and raises latency even higher. | mica User Info... | Perhaps there are some issues with running fibre through ice, permafrost, bogs and marshes? Maybe the cost of running fibre to the far North would be considerably greater than it has been even in BC and Alberta's more rural communities.
