All in all I would say it was a very good show. F.A.Q. started it off with a nice, fairly easy going mix of covers and original material, done really well for a drum/acoustic 2-piece. Very talented guys, good song-writers and enjoyable to watch play. Would be interesting to see what they could do with a full band.

Then we got up there and did our thing (The Black Orchid Rebellion) .. I'm going to have to review the video footage I got of our set before I REALLY know how we sounded, but I'd say we have definately played better. I think we were not helped by rehearsing full-bore for an hour and a half before the show.. We basically burned up all of our useful energy doing that and when it came time to get up and play, all we had left to us was adrenaline. And then somewhere around the middle of the set the songs started to get faster and faster... and never slowed down. I was not pleased about the massive index-finger blister I managed to cause myself during rehearsal either.. ah well, c'est la vie. I am officially my own worst critic. At least somebody came up to me afterwards and said I was an awesome bass player.. that made me feel better!

Acidwash was frickin great. If you haven't seen this band you are missing out. You can definately tell they have been together for a long time and must rehearse like machines because they have it absolutely together and pulled off their set with effortless panache and a lot of enthusiasm and humour. Doesn't hurt that they are all awesome guys either, I might add.

If there is one thing I needed to choose to criticize I think it was Alex dropping so many F-bombs during between-song banter. I can appreciate a well-placed f-bomb as well as the next guy, but for some reason I find it really detracts from the overall concert experience when it is thrown around with reckless abandon. But hey, the guy is an awesome guitarist, so I guess I'll have to forgive the potty mouth :)

So who else was there??!! I'd love to hear some feedback about B.O.R.'s set. And be honest.. we clearly have work to do on our live show, and some honest feedback (even if it is all good.. or bad) would be helpful. - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 9:28am

I didn't see the show, but the importance of honing your live show via "game film" is essential. Keep it up and keep taping your gigs and all of the other stuff (on stage banter, etc...) will certainly work out.

Next time I see a gig listing from you guys, I'll check it out. - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 10:18am

You must have been thinking of a different date or something, Brett - BTB was never on the bill that I know of.

You did a hell of a job up there with Rob, though, man. Nice going! - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 12:40pm

Naw, I just said I was there to check out what Balck Orchid Rebellion was all about. If I mentioned anything about playing songs I'm sorry. I was way past wasted. We enjoyed FAQ. Great choice of covers. It kind of sucks when they wanted you to stay outside until you played but I guess that's just the breaks. Unfortunately, I think I saw only half of Black Orchid Rebellion. Key word: think. Now I'm so wasted that I don't know my own name. The plan was to see the whole show but the beer told me to leave. I really digged the BOR groove. Next time I'll be more sober. - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 1:00pm

Yep good night all around for sure. Pretty decent turnout later on in the night.

Frequently asked questions had some cool songs, and funny jokes/charisma on stage (1 acoustic / Drums). Defintaly a good opener for a show to get the crowd to loosen up.

Next was B.O.R- Great band all around, tight songs, sounds somewhat "90's/grunge influenced).... as far as things to improve on.... some more energy/stage presence (but that comes with time).....then again some of the greatest bands just stand still on stage so who knows. - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 1:33pm

I really wanted to rock out a little more on stage but I was dying from the heat.. I should have worn shorts. I don't know you managed to keep from passing out in that frickin blazer you were wearing, but man.. I run hot though at the best of times, what can I say?

Apart from that, like I say, I just burned all of my energy at rehearsal (won't do that again - live and learn), and I really had nowhere to go on that little stage (especially with my Mesa cab behind me.. that thing is frickin deep) .. the one time I tried to make a real go of it I smashed the headstock of my bass into the overhead speaker, so I figured it was best to be a little conservative at that point.

I do agree though, that we need to liven up our stage presence, introduce a little more interaction with the crowd/each other. And rehearse the crap out of the set. At our first show at Logan's we were tight due to 2 or 3 weeks of intense practice leading up to the show, getting our set ready, etc.. this time around we were resting on our laurels almost up until 2 days before the show, just working on new material and not really practicing the current stuff much. We had it down (or so we thought) fine in the studio, but I think our adrenaline kicked in and our lack of regular rehearsal of those songs reared its ugly head.

I think we will be better the next time around, hopefully in every way imaginable. I think our music is the kind of thing that requires a lot of room to move around and groove to on-stage.

Anyway, Colin, Brett, or whomever, any other feedback on our sound, mix, and just general impressions of our material and performance would be much appreciated. - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 1:50pm

Cool, man, good to hear. It was hella sloppy compared to usual, but if that didn't come through too much I'm certainly happy. I'm curious how vocals, etc, sounded.. I really couldn't hear much of my own mic in the monitors but I caught in the mains from time to time. Man I really need to go home and watch the video. T-minus 3 hours I guess.. - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 2:16pm

big ups to BOR for the 3 part harmonies. Echo-Guitar guy was pretty sweet too. I thought "locked in the trunk of a car" was the best song of the night.

Saint i thought the mix on BOR was perfect, nothing to complain about there.

I thought Alex's guitar couldve used some more juice, but then at some points it was squeeling through, maybe some EQ.

I really liked it when Ruben(spelling?) did backup vox.

Thanks again to Acidwash for getting FAQ on the bill, thanks again to the BOR for letting me use their bass drum. - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 9:20pm Edited: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 9:25pm

Thanks for the props Brett - we had a good time, even if it did feel like we had flubbed up in a few places. Our set was video-taped and upon reviewing that it seemed to have gone better than I thought, which is good. I would have video-taped the rest of the show as well, but I only had enough battery and space for like 40 minutes.

Anyway, good performances by all, definately. It was a pleasure to share a stage with all of you! - Sun, 19 Aug 2007 11:13am
