Slayer frontman Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo have started a yet-unnamed Christian metal side project with ex-LIVING SACRIFICE (and more recently POD) guitarist, Jason Truby. The three have been jamming together since the end of the recent SLAYER tour with UNEARTH and they are presently looking for a second guitarist. Araya, who is Catholic, has commented several times in recent interviews that he and Lombardo don't necessarily subscribe to the lyrical contact of SLAYERS songs.
"We've been playing this kind of music with dark and anti-religious topics for a long time now and I feel like I need something new, something more positive in my life." Explained Araya. Chuckling, he continued, "I feel like I have to do some penance as a good Catholic, you know?" SLAYER fans need not worry though - when asked if he is disbanding SLAYER, Tom reassured his fanbase: "This new project will not interfere with SLAYER any more than my going to church has. It's just a small side thing at the moment."
When asked to comment on the side project, Kerry King had only this to say: "Whatever Tom and Dave need to do to exorcise their demons and keep the Slayer machine moving is OK with me. I wish them the best on their project." - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 12:42am

WoW... O.K. open up a potential war here eh... or? i have had to struggle with the concept of GOD or Creator or Jesus, or ALLA, or Halle Salase, or Jehova, or money or a HIGHER POWER.... and that is HIGHER not higher like you fuckin dope heads. anyway this i find this interesting....
now i know alot of you have no problem putting on your SLAYER T-shirt and heading down to the Bar for some shit. But you very rarly see a person with a Christian T-shirt at a bar..... Lets admit SLAYER's Music is POWERFULL and strokes negative avenues.... BUT GOD is powerfull and just wanted us to stroke posotive avenues. Us humans are a strange animal and i wonder what this spiritual higher power thinks of his/her/its creation? HUMANS... of coarse Satan and Evil is there in all us but we don't have to do his work.

confused again, but i do pray and not to Satan!.... what is some you smart peoples take on this issue.

Well let me put some input on this one....being a huge SLAYER fan and all,I think whatever a musician feels is necessary to further their career then all the power to ya!People get older, people change....as far as religion views go..I have none what so ever.Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo have been rippin it up for over 20 years and I fuckin love the music and prob always will.God or Satan may take your soul, but being a musician stays in ya for life...nothing can take that away!!!Alot of times I dont even pay attention to lyrics,If the music catches my ear then I think thats what matters....to some!! just my opinion. - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 10:03am

Hey thats cool,

No matter how "metal" and "negative" a band is, the members are people and a lot of people are catholic. I find bands try to put up symbols that make people shocked or almost creeped out to fit the sound of their music. Heck, Slipknot had huge pentagrams on their set and they all agree they are in no way into Satanism or what the symbol means, which I find kinda weird, and lame. I'm not a religious guy really, but I still find it almost disrespectful to use symbols that mean things to so many people and not have it mean anything but your band's image. I didn't actually know they were Catholic, but then again I'm not really a slayer fan, yeah I said it! It's kinda weird that they play music that they don't really believe in themselves. Again, not a Slayer fan so I don't entirely know what I'm talking about.. - Thu, 28 Jun 2007 12:12pm

Exactly ... what must be running through Araya's head when he's yelling out lines like "Satanic laws prevail your life is through" or "Learn the sacred words of praise, hail Satan"? Just kind of funny. - Fri, 29 Jun 2007 12:03am

He's probably thinking "it's all an act Lord, I'll see ya Sunday!" As far as playing music you don't believe in, bands like Cannibal Corpse don't actually butcher people, at birth or otherwise. But when you're trashing your own core values and belief systems through music that's definitely a little fucked. Who ever heard of a Jewish NSBM band? - Fri, 29 Jun 2007 12:35am

hahaaa, Araya always looked way too jolly for a metalhead. Well, maybe not always...
I've gone to a hella lot of metal shows where I honestly can't sense any darkness, yes, even at black metal shows. Same as going out to gospel and feeling next to nothing (or visiting a catholic church and feeling absolutely no light). I've always felt both at Slayer shows, even back in the day sans cutsy girls & emo kids, the only difference being that there was more respect for the black back then. But its always been a "celebration".
Even though I'm trying my best these days to forgive, get over my past & be a happier & more loving person (cuz I deserve it), I have a pretty severe dark side, and an honest reverence for those into THE dark side - and those who don't think I do really can go fuck themselves. If you don't have the ability to sense that much about me, I flat out believe that you're a clown.
If this is true about him, I bet thats along the lines of what he & his bandmates are thinking as well. - Fri, 29 Jun 2007 11:57am Edited: Fri, 29 Jun 2007 12:04pm

I did see a guy with a Tourniquet shirt at the Dying Fetus show... It's fine by me if they want to do this. I've never cared which side of the fence a band sits on, it's all about the music. Problem is so much Christian Metal is message oriented, and the music seems like an afterthought. That and their unwillingness to work with secular acts, and the shunning and sometimes ridicule of those that do is bizarre. There have been a few decent acts over the years (the aforementioned Tourniquet, Living Sacrifice, Extol) but I have yet to hear anything that matches Believer. They once toured with Bolt Thrower, Sacrifice and Anacrusis. I would give a nut to go back in time and check that lineup out... - Sat, 14 Jul 2007 7:47am

my question is what exactly is "christian metal" anyway.

50% of metal lyrics talk exclusively about the christian god, jesus, etc etc etc with no other references to anything else. "christian metal" then to me, means metal with a soley christian target demographic.

Maybe this retarded project wont have songs about how fucking much jesus loves you....they will just be normal metal songs....just with a specific target audience.

either way

There have been lots of musicians throughout the metal genre that have been christian. Notably there is Ronnie James Dio who is a catholic, hell, Tony Iomi is a devout anglican. It's not about the message of the music for guys like that, it's about entertaining the fans that have supported your music and being able to look at yourself in the mirror at the end of the day. Hell, I've jammed in death meatal and black metal bands and I'm catholic. The music is fun and then when you're done playing you go back to being you. Just my two cents worth.

HAHA!

Some of the most messed up metalheads I've known were raised Catholic (no offence to any catholics intended).
They can rail about it all they want, but its still got them by the balls. And if they're forced back into a church for any reason, they'll still answer back during the sermon or whatever in all the right places - whether they're actively bitching about the whole thing or not. Its like a twitch! - Mon, 16 Jul 2007 12:37am Edited: Mon, 16 Jul 2007 1:26am

Is this for real? I can't seem to find any solid info on this except on a couple of random forums...

Not that I would be completely surprised...especially after the "guest appearance" that Kerry King had when he appeared on some music video (some skater/punk/rock band) in front of some half-pipe or something, and then this guitar "magically" appeared in his hands.... - Wed, 18 Jul 2007 12:38am

Slayer is one of the originators of "anti-christian" metal. Their lyrics have always been very much metal and over the top, be it quite well-written. Ofcourse it's all for shock value, it's the fans who have over the course of two decades grown into taking metal lyrics seriously for some reason. Not in the least aided by the rise (and fall) of black metal.

These guys are in their forties, no longer a bunch of brats wanting to kick the establishment's shins. Give them a break. Why should a bunch of adolescent metalheads still covered in zits feel betrayed?

And honestly, who was actually shocked to find out that Venom are no real satanists at all? - Thu, 26 Jul 2007 4:44pm

To me it's the difference between singing about something you are indifferent to as opposed to singing about something that is ANTI what you believe in. I would agree and even argue that 99% of satanic themed bands are not Satanic, but ultimately don't believe one way or another. If you are a card carrying CHRISTIAN and singing songs exonerating the adversary to your God then that is a little fishy and worth bitching about in my opinion.

Again, it's all about how seriously they take their own lyrics. Apparently they're quite at peace with their own message. And I bet when we're 46 we will have stopped caring about what the next generation of fans think of our integrity.

But apart from that; catholics are only idolizing pseudo-pagans according to most "real" christians anyway. ;) - Fri, 27 Jul 2007 3:39pm

i have always understood Slayer as an anti religious band, taking a view point from an atheistic side. im stunned to find out they support catholicism and believe in god and satan. just another virus spreading religious propaganda. this has to be a joke. are they gonna tour with that shitter underchode? good thing i dont listen to them anymore. has to be a joke. - Mon, 3 Sep 2007 6:57pm
