Just when you were really getting extra excited about Victoria's 8th Annual Ska Festival we have just come out with yet another announcement to get you even more pumped up! Jamaica's legendary harmony trio - THE ITALS have been added to the Reggae Extravanganza - Thursday, July 12th @ Market Square! As they will be doing a short mini tour throughout western Canada, the festival has been blessed to have the opportunity to host the band.

Tickets will be a "steal of a deal" at 18 adv. -- All ages + beer garden. Be sure to get our to the following tickets outlets as the capacity of Market Square is not huge...

Victoria locations: Lyle's Place, The Reef
Nanaimo: Fascinating Rhythms
Duncan: Area 51
Saltspring Island: B-Side Surf

TICKETWEB.COM for those purchasing from out of town

BTW: If you get the tickets now before we get the new ones re-issued you can save $1.00;)

Here's some information about THE ITALS to get you even more pumped up!

One of Jamaica's signature harmony groups, similar to Jamaican music legends such as Culture, the Mighty Diamonds and the Wailing Souls, the Itals were chiefly responsible for keeping the sound and spirit of roots reggae alive well into the dancehall era. When they finally made the leap to LPs in the '80s, they attracted highly positive notices from many reggae aficionados, even despite the fact that roots was rapidly growing passé in Jamaica with the advent of dancehall reggae. Hits such as "Ina Dis Time," (described by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones as being 'the perfect reggae song') and "Give me Power" provided more credibility to the band right until today as their accolades have included a Grammy Nomination, inclusion in Pollstar's top 100 artists among many more. After recording steadily during the '80s, they remained a productive touring unit for over 25 years performing countless shows worldwide With original lead vocalist Keith Porter and with the release of "Mi Livity," Mr. Porter steps a little further out front and demonstrates why good reggae music allows no labels or limitations. - Tue, 5 Jun 2007 8:58am Edited: Tue, 5 Jun 2007 9:02am

You may have noticed this picture from an in flight Westjet Magazine feature on Canada's Best Festivals (describing Victoria Ska Festival). A few people told us they saw it last month and finally I was able to get the proof...

Regardless:

Don't forget to come to the kick off show for the festival! It's on Wednesday, July 11th @ Market Square 5pm - 10pm) followed by an afterparty at the Reef with Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra.

This band MAMA PULPA from Mexico City is going to perfect for kicking off the festival. They played in Vancouver last year and also visited Victoria. Alfredo Fernandez - lead singer and guitarist in the band also has his own comedy program in Mexico. I've added a link of a TV show review they did of their trip to Vancouver and Victoria in 2006. There are some cool parts in it including when they were being interviewed on DJ Ska T's radio program. Hopefully they'll do another one this year:)

This is kinda a bummer but also kinda cool at the same time:

Outlaw Nation will not be playing on this year's festival. Instead they'll be replaced by UPRITE DUB ORCHESTRA! So all in all it's all good;) They'll open the festival at the Kick Off Show on Wednesday, July 11th @ Market Square!

I wanted to tell all prospective Victoria Ska Festival attendees that I had the opportunity to take in LOS RASTRILLOS at the Vancouver Jazz Festival on Canada Day and it was AWWEESOOME! I'm telling you those boys are gonna rip it at Market Square next Thursday! I also partied with them afterwards and they were VERY STOKED to play the Victoria Ska Festival (to say the least). Make sure to catch these guys now while you still can at an affordable ticket price with a reggae line-up never seen yet on Victoria's Annual Ska Festival. Tickets are going really fast for the show and there won't be very many left at the gate as Market Square's capacity is smaller than the Curling Club (which is also selling well).

Tickets $18 when purchased in advance at: Lyle's Place, The Reef, Jamaican Jerkhouse & TICKETWEB.COM

ALL AGES/ Beer Garden with required ID.

This photo of Arturo from Los Rastrillos taken at the Vancouver Jazz Festival sums up the energy and spirit of the band. Not only is the band super talented but they're also some of the nicest dudes you'll meet. All of the bands on the festival (especially our local boys - Arbutus Trio) are in for a festival show to remember;) - Wed, 4 Jul 2007 2:44am Edited: Wed, 4 Jul 2007 2:55am
