Does anybody else have horror stories from this place? Has any body else blacklisted them from getting your money?

I hear alot that people have problems with them, but people keep going back.

Personally, I think they have always treated me like shit when I was just getting into music. I have since moved on to more honest and friendly dealers of musical goods. - Fri, 6 Apr 2007 8:19am

i've bought 2 guitars there, financed a bass and currently financing a marshall head (both cases paying hardly any interest) and been happy every time...even when i miss a payment here or there they are still fine about it...possibly because of the 30 dollar return charge lol.

u might get a little attitude from some of the guys that work there but think of how many idiots they have to deal with daily....we're talking about musicians here.. ;) lol - Fri, 6 Apr 2007 12:01pm Edited: Fri, 6 Apr 2007 12:03pm

I've never had a problem with Long & McQuade, but really, there is someone who's got a problem with virtually every location around. Tempo Trends? I loathe that place- they've (thus far) ripped me off pretty badly regarding a specific issue. I might even seek legal action depending on the next response I get from them. Ah, it has been good times, I tell ya'!

That aside, you really can find someone who isn't happy with the business practice from just about every store, but for my big purcahses I go to Van or buy used from fellow musicians these days. - Fri, 6 Apr 2007 12:57pm Edited: Fri, 6 Apr 2007 1:01pm

I did a lease to own on a Ibanez guitar w/practice amp. I also did a rent to own on my Digitech RP-80 effects pedal (when they first came out). Both times, not an issue (always 30% of total cost as a down payment, then the remainder over 12 month's). I actually was treated like a somebody, never had any issue with the salespeople down there. L&M is always awesome for rent to own, as any fool can do that, and you don't need a huge credit rating. (An infamous story about returning an amp to Long & McQuade can even be found in Joe Keithley's book "I, Shithead"). - Fri, 6 Apr 2007 4:15pm Edited: Fri, 6 Apr 2007 4:18pm

All I know is I just bought a vettaII down there and a FBV pedal and when I registered them at line6 the Vetta came back as sold on 2004 and the pedal came back as 2000. So needless to say they're shuffling stock around stores and who knows what the fuk torture that pedal has gone through. The pedal won't calibrate for the foot pedals. And the Vetta has serious knob issues, keeps turning it's self up. I know this is a simple fix but I just bought the fuker and combined total was over $3000 so I'm taking them both back and get ones ordered right from the factory. They brought the pedal in from another store, so it's been crapped on for almost 7 years. I’m pissed. - Fri, 6 Apr 2007 4:54pm

I've bought and rented tons of stuff from L&M and continue to do so. I mean TONS. Like thousands of thousands of dollars worth. I've never had any one treat me bad in any regard. I'm 18 (have been using L&M for 10 years), and as a teenager, I'm used to getting no respect from most stores and businesses. But I've always been treated great there. Nowadays I go there sometimes without intent on spending money, just to ask people questions about gear and learn things. And they're still helpful and kind. Only problem I ever had was when I needed a repair on my amp and it took a long time. I went in 3 and a half weeks later, asked them when it'd be done. They didn't even bother checking the status, just replaced it with a brand new amp. It was no longer under warranty either. Oh yeah, and there was one other time when I ordered a 9 guitar stand and they tried to give me one that had been wrecked. They said it was damaged during shipping and still wanted to charge me full price. I talked them into trading it for one they were using on the showroom floor though and paid $10 less. that's the WORST things I can think of in TEN years of going there at least twice a month. - Fri, 6 Apr 2007 10:08pm

All I can say is I can't wait for a Tom Lee to open here in Vic.

L&M financing rate: 24% (18% if you use direct withdrawl)

Tom Lee financing rate: 3%

That being said, L&M have always been pretty good to me. If not for their financing, as outrageous as the rate is, I bet half the musicians in this town would be playing a pawn shop guitar with the neck duct-taped back onto the body.

Wayne has always gone out of his way for me. - Sat, 7 Apr 2007 9:38am

Tom Lee's finance rate it 3% of the total of the purchase. So for a $2000 amp you'd end up paying only $60
At L&M it's 18% . BUT it's 18% on each PAYMENT, not on the full price. So you'd end up paying around $250, depending on what your down payment is... It's quite a bit more, but not really outrageous. - Sat, 7 Apr 2007 11:49am

I too have spent untold amounts there. Too much over many years, trust me. Like any large retailer, the staff turnover can be problematic, and you'll always have some issues. But they do a lot of things right. Many music stores have the Nigel Tufnel attitude about guitars: 'No, you can't touch it- don't even look at it anymore!' I LOVE that you can be an absolute novice and try really beautiful guitars. They DO offer financing to just about anybody, you can rent stuff and they bring in lots of stock with something new every time you go in. They ARE Canadian, prices are REALLY fair and I've always found that they offer fair trade for your used equipment. You'll hear all the same complaints about Tom Lee when they get here. It's inevitable. Really, I think we're lucky to have a store that size and that reasonable. - Sat, 7 Apr 2007 1:39pm

I have always had great relations with the staff at L & M especially since the new store opened up. Since I know a bunch of the staff there they do things like watch out for good deals on stuff that I'm looking for etc. and have done me lots of little favors that you wouldn't expect from a massive chain store such as them. No complaints here... - Sat, 7 Apr 2007 2:11pm

L&McQ have always treated me well and you just can't beat the prices for new gear. If I were running a music store I'd charge huge interest too. We are talking about deadbeat musicians here. As for Tom Lee, the grass is always greener on the other side right? We'll see about that one. I just hope they stock some REAL ESP's- not the LTD's. - Sat, 7 Apr 2007 2:48pm

I was so excited last year on my first day of x-mas shopping, and the first place I went was Long and Mc Quade for a Drum Throne for my boyfriend, I was waiting forever to get help from someone there, which was fine I knew they were busy, I was looking at the thrones and found one I really liked. It was a Pearl Roadster and it was around $275.00 but it was a floor model and I wanted one in a box that no one had sat on....if i'm gonna pay almost $300 I wanted one untouched.....anyway when I finally got helped I asked the guy for one in the box...he said this was the last one...i said well would you take a couple of bucks off because it was used and he yelled at me " we are not a second hand store...we don't do that here"...I thaught that was so uncalled for he made me feel like such an idiot in front of a bunch of people....so I left the store, I hate being yelled at so I cried in my car...lol...i know its silly but fuck him,,,,,,great salesman!!!!!you want my money or not asshole...so I went back in and talked to the boss lady and told her that guy was a dick... she sold me the throne for $20 off the price....she was cool.... - Sat, 7 Apr 2007 7:53pm

Always been treated very well by the staff at L/M, dating back to the days they were across from The Brick.

Id have to say without L/M in my life, life as a young credit-less half employed musician would have been without decent gear.

I also like that I can order a product in and if I dont like it, there is no hassle, no money down (Im sure there may be for more expensive items ..)

But Tom Lee also gave me an account in Vancouver (based on the fact that I now actually have credit..) but they WILL NOT order in any LTD or ESP without a downpayment.

And that being said, L/M will consider you for an account even if your credit is the shits, whereas Tom Lee do credit checks through Equifax.

Also, L/M clinics kick ass for free to cheap. Ive seen so many killer clinics in the past few years, and now really looking forward to Bill Bruford drum clinic for a paltry $5 for some world class drumming.

They should bring back Jennifer Batten, nothing like watching a late 40's hippy rocker mom shred circles around every guitarist I ever seen.. - Sun, 8 Apr 2007 12:38pm Edited: Sun, 8 Apr 2007 12:41pm

I'm quite disconcerted that Ray the accountant shaved his head. I've been going through toupee-separation-anxiety because of it. (RAY-BAAAWWWT!)
Nicola is a goddess.
Bill Bruford will indeed so unbelievably rule. (note to self - must dig up all maudlin old Yes, King Crimson, Bruford band, and Earthworks albums and cds for him to sign.) (I missed A.W.!)
Rob in drums is awesome.
The main guy (Wayne?) is cool because one time he actually hummed (perfectly) the theme song to "Fernwood Tonight".

I don't really want to over-state this, but I have noticed that apart from some of the old-timers at L&M, I find the level of knowledgeable customer service to be lacking in recent years. There didn't used to be so much guessing about the answers to direct technical questions. As far as I know, all employees must still be musicians to be employed there, but sometimes I wonder what kind of musicians, as answers to what I would have thought straightforward questions (posed in the appropriate department of course) seem to confuse the staff more than anything.

As mentioned, Colin and bunch are a different story, but those guys don't seem to be working the departments much anymore. Rob in drums is top notch as well. Extremely talented and knowledgeable.

L&M aren't the only people having trouble keeping up with customer service. It's become very difficult to find good customer-service oriented people, and you have to pay them very well to stay around for any length of time.

I still buy 90% of my things there, and recently got back into Renting a bit, so it hasn't put me right off or anything.

I would welcome some competition just to keep everyone on their toes. It does do wonders for retail motivation. Tom Lee here in town is obviously not a full service music store. Obviously they can bring anything in, but most-times you need shit right now... - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 10:59am Edited: Tue, 10 Apr 2007 11:13am

I think L&M should be open on SUNDAYS as well. Why are they closed all day on Sunday? Also I thought it was quite lame when I went there on boxing day to do some purchasing but yet they are closed?

Perhaps this will change when they have more competition like Tom Lee coming to town. - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 12:07pm

I love l&m though rob is a really awsome guy and so is linden many a times ive heard hilarious stories from them any they will often cut a deal or something like if your buying a bunch of things and one used thing theyll knock some of the used item cause thier great guys

if i wasnt lazy and had a car id probably be there right now buying drum gear

victoria doesnt exactly have many other options ESPECIALLY for drummers tempo trend never been there personally but anyone i asked hasnt liked it

larsens is okay and i have to say a bit frendlier but they have hardly any selection fro drummers and only sell one brand of drums as far as im aware - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 4:08pm

"L&M aren't the only people having trouble keeping up with customer service. It's become very difficult to find good customer-service oriented people, and you have to pay them very well to stay around for any length of time."

And most don't pay customer service people like they should be paid. And that is why the good people end up leaving...not pointing fingers at L&M, just a blanket comment for the world.

I haven't had any bad dealings with L&M. I used to know 90% of the staff in the store, so I didn't have to deal with the sales staff that I didn't know. I go in there now and am in and out like a snap as I don't do a two hour social call. - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 5:59pm

L & M has been dece to me, i've been going to them for 13 years now. My beef is when you order something in and they never call you then when you come in weeks after they say it will be in and ask whats going on they magically find it. Otherwise I'm happy with that store, I've financed lots of stuff and I have found almost all the guys that have worked there helpful. Tom Lee is really cool though, I've only dealt with their drum section in Van, never financed. Actually I was there today, that is a freaking huge drum section. They got it all, and actually have sales on in their drum section sometimes, I got a Paiste 18" Sig Fast Crash for 25% off there, when Paiste was on sale, saved $100! righton. - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 7:35pm

It's an awesome place in a lot of ways, a little behind the times in a few others.
You will NEVER find an easier place to get credit approval in your life. Renting and financing is super easy (In house financing is extremely rare, I doubt Tom Lee has this)
They have never been open on a Sunday in the 50+ years they've been open.
And you may think that you get a poor attitude when you go there sometimes, but they treat their employees well, and pay decent. Whoever goes to work at Tom Lee will not be able to say the same. I judge every business by how they treat their employees, if they seem unhappy I don't go there again. - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 8:32pm

Ah but that's all part of my point, good customer service starts with happy employees. A good business is customer oriented, and employee oriented.

Too many (other) businesses ask the maximum from their employees and pay the minimum, not to mention treat them poorly. This will always reflect in poor customer service. How many people have had that job they left because they "didn't make enough to put up with this crap..."? - Tue, 10 Apr 2007 10:42pm

I always go to L&M for my guitars and bass stuff.
Today I was at L&M to buy tube preamp for my acoustic electric guitar, since the guy at the recording departemen is acting like a jerk not even say Hi to me. Soo, I went to acoustic guitar section to ask for second opinion about the tube preamp.
Soo I talk to this Acoustic guitar man and I mention that the tube pre amp is coast about $55 to $80 soo that's mean I don't want to spend toomuch money to improove my acoustic guitar sound for now. and He's first sugestion is BUY ANOTHER GUITAR! hahahaha.... very helpfull!

soo I am back to recording room, grab the tube preamp and go to the cashier and finnaly nice gentleman at the cashier give me lil suggestion. soo I bought the preamp, I was just trying it 1 hour ago and very happy with it. I shoudn't go to the acoustic guitar section at L&M and talk to that man, makes me don't wanna go back there. Peace " - Thu, 19 Apr 2007 7:21pm Edited: Thu, 19 Apr 2007 7:53pm

No real horror stories but I am not really happy with them at all. So much so that I paid off my account last year and haven't bought anything big (other than strings/pics) for almost a year now.

I can walk into any place and get at least tax knocked off but they just won't budge for me at L&M. I was told "they don't do that here" and "this is the absolute best price we can let it go for". Despite the fact that some of my buds get good deals on stuff. Its just complete BS.

Of course this won't affect their business at all but when you think about how many amp heads/guitars I will buy in the next 20 years (figure on spending $1000/year which is like 1/5 of what I normally spend, and no I am not kidding) then they are looking at $20K, not alot of money to them so why should they care.

I am not the type to complain to anyones boss but I am the type who will quietly take his business elsewhere.

hey just a little note on the not giving deals subject we offer the lowest price in canada with a 30 day price match on any canadian retailer, one of the reason we can do this is because we do not work on comisson. also we tend to be closer to cost than other retail stores, so there is not a lot of room to budge. that being said if anyone of your friends did get a deal than i don't know what to tell you, but it shouldn't of happend - Tue, 24 Apr 2007 7:52pm

I've bought two guitars from them as well as other things like mini studio monitors, cases, strings, straps etc. I've had issues with them as has a friend of mine but their prices are very good so I will continue shopping there. I usually don't ask for help so I can't comment too much on the service. Some of the guys are great and some aren't which is normal for most other places.

As for horror stories I once returned my studio monitors under warranty. They sent them back. I called them various times to see if they were in and they kept telling me they would call me when they arrive. Anyway 6 months later I talk to a new guy that just started there and he thought it was strange so he looked into it. He said the company doesn't return the repairs they just send out new ones and Long & McQuade was just supposed to give me a new set. They didn't have any in stock so I waited another two weeks for shipment. I'm glad this guy went the extra mile and looked into the issue. Everyone else just checked to see if they had arrived and told me they would call me.

A friend of mine once ordered a custom case for his V years ago when they were at the other location. They said they would call him but they never did. We still joke about it to this day that they still haven't called. - Wed, 25 Apr 2007 2:35pm
