Yes, that is terrible. Musicians wanting to charge people to see them play so that they can make a living doing what they want to do instead of working as a dishwasher or urinal cleaner. Yes, it is terrible that musicians want to earn $$$ so that they can pay their rent, food for their kids, and medical insurance. - Mon, 5 Mar 2007 5:36pm

it makes me sad... Back in 96, when I was 16 I really liked SD, they were one of my fav bands... I listened to sick boy so many times, I loved lines like "don't you feel no shame, thats what eve said to adam, before she came."
Back then though sd played $5 shows, toured a lot, and played with underground diy bands... Now you can get social distoriation wall clocks, and get their cd's @ any major store, sd back packs too...
and no more $5 all agers now, think of it the over all cost on the arena is arround $3000 rent, plus sound system, tix are $35, and the arena holds 1400 people... I am assuming this will not sell out, but still even 700 people, half capacity thats a lot of cash...
As I said it makes me sad, cause really I would like to see socail d, but there is no way I am gonna pay more for them than a tix to distort fest or burning portland, and as much as I would like to see themm, their now in that catagory with bands like Against Me and Chumbawumba, and the Brat Attack... - Tue, 6 Mar 2007 2:43pm

Once again Conrad, we bump heads on an issue.

First off, I'd love to hear where you saw SD for $5 in 1996? I've seen them a half a dozen times (the earliest in '92) and it was never less than $20(maybe $15 once).

Next, their CD have been available in major stores since their major label self titled debut in 1990(The one that "Sick Boy" was on). Even before that they were on Enigma which had major distribution. In the 80's I lived in a hick redneck town, yet I was still able to find "Mommy's Little Monster" and "Prision Bound" at the local record store.

SD hasn't really changed at all since Ness cleaned up in the late 80's. A little less punk and a little more rock n roll, but who cares? He writes and plays damn good music and deserves to live off of it.

You compare this to bringing in Jello to talk, but Jello just shows up by himself to do his thing. A band of this size needs to bring a truckload of equipment as well as a bus for band and a sizable crew. That means ferry money, as well as payment, food and lodging for said crew. You have to understand that SD aren't, nor do they want to be, the same old punk band with four dudes in a shitty Econoline barely making their way from town to town. They're past that.

Lastly, you need to realize that a lot of people are punk rockers for the music and the way it makes them feel, not the hippie PC ideals.

I had the chance back in 1983.... the Dayglos, Suburban Menace, and another LA band named Youth Brigade... at the OAP down town Victoria.... the show got shut down by the police due to open booze.

Yeah and the admission at that time was only $5 advance $6 at the door..... Conrad are you sure it wasn't this show you where refering too? Back then I was making $2.65 an hour sweeping up and repairing tires at an automotive repair shop.... so it cost me 2.7 hours labour to potentially see this show. So now this time SD are chargeing $35 to see them and minimum wage is $8 an hour... so it will cost you 4.2 hours labour. so you have to work only 1.3 hours extra... WOW seems like a real good deal to me.

But then again not everybody works for a living... hippies.

If you love the band support them! and Ty said it! "ABSOLUTE MUSIC" dance & fun

anyway... Rod Stewart is playing Van this weekend and Tickets are over $100 each.... hummmmmm why is a Great Band Like Social Distortion charging so little for thier tickets?

hmmm.... conflict is playing a series of $10-15 shows, and their coming with a lot of equipment from england, and playing often smaller venues.... I guess it must be 1990....?
$5 a tix could have covered costs, and still made a profit. $10 would still have made decent profits, and yet seamed acceptable.... even $15 is pushing it.

Hell back before i cared as much about lyrics I saw Clit 45 with Lower Class Bratts, for $5, I saw the Vibrators and the Gutter Demons for $12.
I saw conflict for $10, shit it was only $55 for united fest with the addics, anti-nowhere league, Ripcordz, conflict, gutter demons, dickies, bunch of fucking goofs, and many others (30 bands)...
Distort was even cheaper, with many great bands...
Even Burning Portland (great line up) is only about $30 I think

you decide whats a better deal...

And I don't even bother mentioning those bands playing stadiums for $100 tix, cause I think it is obviouse, their rock stars, not punks. - Tue, 6 Mar 2007 11:48pm

NNB is entitled to his opinion. Even if we all disagree.
You cannot compare Jello's little talk to this show. I was at Jello's talk. All he did was preach to the choir, and make fun of U.S. politicians physical appearances. It was cool to see Jello, but not really worth $20. If we want big name bands to come here, we have to pay. Social D is a big name band. $35 is not much in the grand scheme of things.

$35, ha, I paid $50us and drove to Colorado to see them at Red Rocks with Tiger Army and the Supersuckers. Maybe I'm crazy, but it was more than worth it to me and I'd do it again. Got lucky a year ago when they were playing house of blues Anaheim while me and my fiance were at Disneyland. Tickets for that were about $30us, which really isn't to bad.
Yeah, $55 for 30 bands is a good deal, but I like Social Distortion and I'm not worried about what's a better deal. The better deal is going to see what you like because you like them, not because it's a better deal! - Wed, 7 Mar 2007 11:39am

yah and alot of bands that tour around for $5 shows are pretty much going into the hole, or on vacation while playing. (ie: paying for the trip out of pocket)

For some bands this is fine, especially up and coming ones that want to or need to experience the life of the road. But look at a band like SD, these are old men that have toured massively, the allure of sleeping on strange mattresses and showering once a week in a never been cleaned bathroom has probably worn thin for them many years ago.. - Thu, 8 Mar 2007 11:31am

> saw the Vibrators and the Gutter Demons for $12.

I promoted that show and know that the opening band lost money to play the gig and the healiner barely broke even. I did the show on a door deal because I knew the turnout would be shakey but wanted to get the band to the island, they really wanted to play as they had an extra date and played for a door split. The show in Vancouver on that tour was $20. Also Clit 45 and The Lower Class Brats ask about $1500 for a show on an off night as of about a year and a half ago and tickets for that tour were arround $15. $35 for Social Distortion is the going rate, the band packs the house wherever they play and put on a top notch quality show.

Most shows are priced lower in Victoria then they are arround the rest of north america and everyone should realize that, the prmoters in this city (Dane from Ska Society and Enigmatica, Degree One, Dimitri/Nick/Gary from Atomique, Malcolm SOS + Sealed with a Kiss (though he lives in Van now) etc all try and keep their prices as low as possible for the public. Combine that with Lyles Place and some other merchants arround the city who are kind enough to act as sales vendors WITHOUT ADDING A SERVICE CHARGE and your getting a pretty sweet deal. - Thu, 8 Mar 2007 12:43pm

No cordel I had to pay $2200, plus a rider that included meals drinks, and a hotel, plus transportations, and I lost $1000, cause The turnout was only 135 people rather than the projected 250-300, and tix were $20 for adults, $15 @ for youth, as well I let you and peter in for a total of $3.40.
I did not however pay airfair, that was included in his fee, as was his imigration costs to legally come into canada.
If I had more than a week to promote it it would have broke even, and had I a bigger venue and 2 months to promote it tix would have been closer to $10, either way that venue didn't hold 1400 people.
And jello been on the scene since 1978. Also conflict has been since 1982, and they still are playing $10 shows well on tour and often cheaper in the UK. INfact in both the cases of Jello and conflict when I have worked with them they requested to keep tix prices low, jello stated under $25, and Conflict had stated under $15.

p.s asshole I am looking for work, it is hard though when I am committedf to the volluteer work I do and the organizing first, so I need a job that can work arround that schedual. - Fri, 9 Mar 2007 11:32am

When Jello spoke at Vertigo at UVic in 2000, it was $20. The room is massive and it was packed. You can't say that the small venue is the only reason your show was $20.

There is nothing wrong with a band wanting to live off of it's music. Nothing at all.

Con, you need to save that "PC, save the world one vegan potluck at a time" hippie jive for the underage girls at the punk shows. They'd be the only ones silly enough to buy into it.

Social D in Victoria for 35 bucks? Bargain, I say. I missed them the last few times in Vancouver, and it seems to me that tickets were even more than $35 - plus you're dealing with the ferry, crashing overnight, all that stuff.

For me, $35 is a small price to pay to finally see the band that got me into punk music in the first place.

I have massive respect for bands who drive coast to coast, sleep on piss-stained carpets most nights, and play for $5. I try to get out and support these guys and gals as much as I can. I'm sure that Social D did this for years (not to mention dealing with prison, addiction, deaths of bandmates, etc.). Dues have been paid, and then some.

Good times in Victoria these days. Social Distortion, DOA, the Bouncing Souls, plus all the usual great local stuff. - Sat, 10 Mar 2007 8:15am

Hey Conrad,

I hate to say it but maybe the reason your show didn't sell out was because nobody wanted to see Jello.

You need to wake up and see that change isn't going to come through you spitting out your crusty anarchist retoric on a message board, but through real life involvement with the people around you. The people who actually are making a change in this world are silent and just leading by example. Do the world a favor and instead of trying to be heard, listen for once and see the world is bigger than your vegan potlucking, sit around and complain but not do anything about it life. People like you remind me of that scene in Life of Brian when the Peoples front of Judea, or was it the Judean peoples front are sitting there passing motions and arguing. - Sat, 10 Mar 2007 9:00am

Hell, I am going to start a real potluck. Grab on a viking helmet and bring an axe and start a bonfire. The next step is to bring a bunch of wild mountain sheep along to this field with viking metal blasting in the background. Now, bludgeon these sheep, you know chop off their heads shoot em with a bow whatever does the job. So now that all these fine animals have assumed the course of nature roast them on a giant spicket on the bonfire. However singing viking chants and carols while galavanting around these roasting animals is mandatory, damn even shoot down some wild eagles and wombat while dancing to assume your hunger. So anyways one day il do this, teach our kids the real course of nature and life which are of course; viking metal and hunting. On that glorious day you may even see a tear in my eye. - Sat, 24 Mar 2007 12:23am
