How come when a band goes into, say, The Rat's Nest studio, no bands record stuff in 1 take and they end up dicking around with Protools or CuBase VST to over dub stuff to death?!? Of course I've never been in a band recording tracks for a demo/CD (but I've been lucky enough to be at a few recording sessions) so I don't understand. Isn't that how old blues artists used to record (yes, they didn't have CuBase or ProTewlz) stuff, and it worked for them. I've always been curious about this after being at the Rats Nest the last time, and they were spending up to 45 minutes to get vocals down proper (and that was for 1 track). - Fri, 2 Mar 2007 4:41pm Edited: Sat, 3 Mar 2007 3:54pm

Looking forward to the new Remanes. - Sat, 3 Mar 2007 4:30pm

Yes I have to agree, so there's a reason why music takes so long to produce. I too am awaiting the new Remanes CD, and new Shivs CD, and Hoosegow CD, and...

there are a few reasons why you can't just record stuff in one take. it usually some time for musicians to get 'in the zone'. early takes can be frought with timing errors, strings not being muted, unenthusiastic playing, etc. sometimes after something has been recorded and you listen to the playback it becomes apparent that there's some issue compromising sound quality or the desired tone which has to be rectified before recording can continue. i'm sure there are more reasons, but those are the obvious ones that plagued my last recording session. all that being said though, i have done stuff in one take before. - Wed, 7 Mar 2007 7:55pm

Yeah, the old blues and jazz guys have different production quality expectations. With acoustic instruments things aren't as loud and hard to mix. Plus overall I would say the jazz guys at least were way better musicians the most of us. - Wed, 18 Apr 2007 1:51pm

some people still record live.
I hate multitracking. With the band I'm alot of it is about the energy and about the fuckups. Recording every instrument flawlessly and separately tends to suck some of the feeling out of the music.

If you have a big enough room, you can set up a decent live recording where the instruments wont bleed and the live feel is still there.

Plus, doing it live you can cut an EP in a day. - Fri, 20 Apr 2007 7:56am

Not everyone fucks around all day in ProTools. As far as the bed tracks go (Drums, Bass, (2) Guitars, and riddim Keyboards) People's War recorded 7 full CDs worth of material in essentially one take off the floor. (Not all in the same session obviously, we just recorded every week for a few months) I only remember 2 songs were we had to stop and start over. (And NEVER a third time, Tony Goluza gets upset when you waste time)
Overdubs are always a little more fussy partially because it's more difficult to get a good vibe going while listening to everything else in headphones and no other live people in the room. Often there is a bit more time spent on vocals 'cause, well you know vocalists....

Here's a secret for you all. Assuming people know what they're doing at all, without reservation I can say, the first take is always superior. It might get fucked up and can't be used for other reasons, but second and third takes are *almost always* less interesting than the first.
Its part of the reason people like Thelonius Monk and Miles often refused to do a second take, even if there are mistakes present.

Live recording in the studio is still alive and well as far as I know.... But to put it all together into a professional finished product does take time. And then send it off to be mastered and eventually printed. - Fri, 20 Apr 2007 8:56am
