I apologize if this isn't classified in the correct forum but I have been quite curious what local bands and musicians think of the idea of having an all ages club that all alternative bands can play. A fee would be charged to the attendees like any of those famous clubs that produced the likes of The Ramones or Rancid and percentage of the profits could be paid out to musicians. The island has a wealth of you guys wanting to build up your underground rapport, why not have a club specifically for like-minded freaks? - Wed, 28 Feb 2007 2:59am Edited: Wed, 28 Feb 2007 3:01am

Sounds great, but it just may be hard to pull off unfortunately. - Wed, 28 Feb 2007 3:53pm

The building where Soundgarden was can be bought for a steal, actually. And it's still a well respected venue, even if it's been closed for years. - Wed, 28 Feb 2007 6:13pm

I think this is what everyone wants in every city. The problems are really only about the cash to make it happen and someone who's so attached to the vision that they're prepared to push past all the hurdles alone during the bad times while everyone else bails.
And the hurdles seem to come from all sides unfortunately.
Not to put you off or anything. I'm just saying, something like that takes a lot of heart & persistance. - Wed, 28 Feb 2007 9:50pm Edited: Wed, 28 Feb 2007 9:52pm

Even the venerable CBGBs is no more, although it did have a long run.

There's no doubt that Victoria needs more places for musicians to make money, but it has to be difficult making enough money to pay the talent well AND keep up with the bills. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. Bars have the economies of alcohol to help out, but a music-only site? Do it if you can, but be prepared to blow a few million bucks.

The problems with opening this type of venue are numerous, and not limited to, money, time, and commitment. The biggest problem with Canada is they would way rather fund an established act then put money into upcoming and new talent. In places like Holland, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria, (to name a few) they would way rather fund the upcoming musician and bands. They do this by having lotteries for money to record, for gear, tour support, CD pressing, etc. A friend of mine's band got 30,000 Danish kroners in credit to record, press and release their album of a basically unknown band. That's roughly $6000. The album they put out was great, great production and packaging.
The other big thing with these countries (and to finally get to the point!) is the funding they give the venues to attract, promote and put on good shows.
My band, the Mcrackins, just did 6 weeks in Europe and we were getting on average, 450 euros a show. That's wether or not 150 people showed up or 5 people. The venue doesn't lose as that money is giving to them by their government. That equates to about $700 Canadian a show. If Canada was smart and did this, then this type of venue would be feasible in Canada, but not now, you'd just be jumping through loophole after loophole, cutting through constant red tape and putting money into a complete money pit. Sucks, but that's the harsh reality of music in Canada.
All the power to you and I'll be the first to pat you on the back if you could get something like this going because Canada really needs venues like this. - Fri, 2 Mar 2007 2:31pm

lonemonk, this establishment would be a cafe but a very music inspired one at that. Therefore it would not be a place solely dependent on bands to keep it going, but also food and beverage.
And Nautical Dog, I don't doubt something like this will cost a lot of money and not to mention time putting together. A lot could be done by volunteers though once a building is designated.
Order will be kept by people (bands included) having to pay a membership fee to the venue. This membership would show proof of age and alcohol could be served in proportion by having the member purchase something to eat in order to buy drinks. That's what would make it legal for adolescents to be there.
Strict policies will be in place to keep the law off our backs and such as would be expected. - Fri, 2 Mar 2007 4:36pm Edited: Fri, 2 Mar 2007 4:43pm

Current archaic liquor laws in BC prevent a venue from catering to both all ages and alcoholic events without a special permit. - Fri, 2 Mar 2007 6:46pm

don't get me wrong, I think it would be a great idea and I'd support it any way I could, but you seem to think it's going to be so easy. A liquor license isn't as easy as going and paying some money and here you go. Whether you serve food or not also doesn't mean you can have all ages. A liquor license is a long, expensive process that involves not only the liquor board, but the other establishments in the area that already serve alcohol.
If I were doing it, all ages, meaning no alcohol, would be your safest bet. Not only is it easier, but it makes all the other red tape like getting a building, insurance, licenses etc. a lot easier.
I myself have tried in the past to accomplish this exact thing and just ran into so many problems that it just never happened. Also, we used to have a place in Surrey called the Java Joint that was started as an idea similar to yours, that just couldn't stay afloat because of costs, people saying they'd help and not and many other things.
Like I said at the beginning though, if you're willing to spend the money and commit the time, great, I'd support you, but really do your research first, figure out every possible thing and then go from there. - Sat, 3 Mar 2007 6:14pm

Nautical Dog, I posted this in the like thread of another forum:

Yes, with a liquor license, insurance costs would skyrocket. So if it were under my sole decision, there would be no alcohol on the premises. But their would be strict rules at the venue, membership cards would be issued, a copy of members' identification would be taken and printed and all would have to sign some sort of agreement: no drugs, no alcohol and no violence. That would apply to bands as well. What people do away from the venue before and after is their own business.

Break the rules, automatically banned. No waver.

Also I know a bit about obtaining licenses, my Mom owned a store that sold pipes and we had to obtain a tobacco license. I do actually know, I do. - Sat, 3 Mar 2007 7:03pm

Membership would be free Andrew, it's just to ensure we have reference of everyone that steps into the venue.

I went and sought out a few places today. There is a space underneath the Carlton Club in Esquimalt that is vacant, but it needs a lot of work. I also found a vacant building on Pembroke St. but I didn't see any For Lease signs etc. So for that one, I might have to contact a realtor. As well, there are two seperate spaces side by side available right on Douglas St in the downtown. They are in a great high traffic area, set up for serving food and probably about the size to accomodate such a venue. - Sun, 4 Mar 2007 10:46pm

Another thing you could do is a couple benefit gigs, you might be able to raise some cash that way. Also, get a hold of someone at Gilman and pick their brain, see what kind of info they can give to help out. - Tue, 6 Mar 2007 7:54am
