I can't believe this. Tonight I opened up my guitar case
to practice, and the headstock is broken! I've heard
many stories about Les Paul's breaking or snapping the
headstocks when they fall of a stand or get dropped. This
one has never been dropped or misused, it's only about
4 months old! it is set at the stock action hieght, only
ever played at standard a440 tuning. I baby this thing,
standard gauge strings, never left outside in the cold or anything! Anyone else heard of this? - Tue, 20 Feb 2007 8:40pm

Do you have a hard or soft case?!? That's rather wierd, how did it get damaged in the first place? (someone didn't step on the headstock did they?!?) - Tue, 20 Feb 2007 9:10pm

It has a hardcase. It's totally weird, there was no
incident. We finished playing on friday night, I put the
guitar away in it's case. Tonight I opened the case and the guitar was broken. There are no marks or dings or anything on the headstock. I have no idea how this happened. - Tue, 20 Feb 2007 9:17pm

Super fukin shitty man, can you take it back? Maybe the damage happened when it was being delivered to you from wherever you got it from? If it’s a bolt on problem solved, if not ? It can be glued and fixed no probs. - Tue, 20 Feb 2007 9:43pm Edited: Tue, 20 Feb 2007 9:45pm

That fukkin blows. However, like XY-Guy said, it can be fixed/glued no problem. I have heard of this things happening with 12 string guitars. One happened to me. - Tue, 20 Feb 2007 10:14pm

dude....come back to earth here......that guitar didnt snap itself....hate to get all c.s.i. on you but by the looks of that crack it apears to me that it fell backwards causing the headstock to push forward resulting in the break on the back of the neck.....my guess is someone droped your guitar and then didnt tell you....i would bet on it......unless like you suspect the tension of the strings pulled it toward the bridge...they can be glued but it's never going to be the same. - Tue, 20 Feb 2007 10:22pm

Welcome to the world of the glue on neck. I have seen countless incidents just like this and they are ALL glue on necks. I have never ever seen a 60's era SG that hasn't had its neck broken off at least once. Kinda goes with the turf. Sorry but... - Wed, 21 Feb 2007 2:24pm

A properly repaired headstock break , not just glued but you need dowling in there too will actually be stronger then original.....just watch who you get to do the repair....I have to agree with Willy, someone dropped it on you....I run very heavy strings 13's and have never had one just snap on me. GiG bags are the bain of electric guitars, false sense of security they offer no real protection at all.

Here's a question though, when the hell did they stop making Les pauls with Mahogony necks? That looks like maple to me, if you use maple with that profile it would have to be a scarf joint...sad if you ask me, but probably why I really haven't picked up a new guitar in years, they just don't interest me, and no I'm not a vintage snob, its just fact. - Wed, 21 Feb 2007 2:32pm Edited: Wed, 21 Feb 2007 2:34pm

This guitar is advertised as having a mahogany neck, right
of the gibson website
http://www.gibson.com/Products/GibsonElectric/Gibson%20Electric%20Guitars/LesPaul/Les%20Paul%20GT/
I agree it doesn't look like mahogany. - Wed, 21 Feb 2007 4:28pm

Dude, track down a guitar tech that goes by the name of Sonny. The guy's a wizard with Les Pauls. I've a friend with a classic from the 60's that the neck snapped off. He turned it over to this guy and it's not only fixed but in a glass display case. In other words, it's a freakin' showpiece. - Wed, 21 Feb 2007 4:46pm

The "Sonny" guy mentioned above I'm sure is Sonny Black, he does great work (he's really well known for his paint jobs and guitars that he makes). I've had some work done by Rufus who is awesome as well.

I had an epiphone les paul that had the neck repaired on it twice (in two different places)... yeah I was pretty clumsy with that thing... but once it's repaired properly, the glue holds better than the wood does. - Wed, 21 Feb 2007 8:54pm

The neck is mahogany. I can tell from the pics. I am a cabinet maker by trade.
And to the guy who says this kind of break cant happen on its own, you are clueless. - Thu, 22 Feb 2007 3:51pm

About 2 months ago, I had the guitar (in it's case) on top
of my head that was on top of my cab, rolling it into logans and the guitar fell off the head twice in a row. I
didn't think anything of it, played that show - the guitar didn't even fall out of tune badly. i have restrung and
played the guitar many times since then with no problems.
Maybe I weekened the headstock with those drops I don't know. Seems odd though that the guitar wouldn't break at the time of those impacts. Gibson states that you can break the headstock even if the guitar is in it's case and
falls over sideways. Bottom line is these headstocks are
week and prone to breaking. Funny thing is with all the hundreds of shows/parties, and generall buffoonery with my
old (early 90's) goldtop classic Les Paul it never broke,
and I dropped that guitar at least 5 times, out of it's case. Gibson does not warranty headstock breakage, and they still make it with the same design. I can't bitch too
much, time to get it fixed and move on - it gives character/history to the guitar. I just hope it plays as nice as before! Thanx for all the responses! Maybe from now on I'll use the thumbwheel combination lock on the case. - Thu, 22 Feb 2007 5:33pm

Hey Paul, too bad on the warauntee, it is a problem with Gibsons fo shizzle.....not as bad as the extreme neck profile on 50's Gibsons though...A proper repair will be all good, like I said actually stronger. I have always thought that the way gibsons lay in their cases is a recipe for disaster, puts the headstock in a perfect spot to snap....from the pic you emailed me I would say you probably did split the grain on one of those drops.

Calton Cases are the only way to go...expensive but worth every penny, I won't take aferry ride without one....good luck, Dave will do you right he's worked on probably 200+ guitars for me. - Thu, 22 Feb 2007 7:07pm

I had an Epiphone Les Paul, the exact same crack happened to it. It got glued back together works like charm.

I also have a Garrison G-10 that was sold to me 2nd hand which had a crack in it. It was shipped back, repaired, and i swear to god, you cant even tell. Wood is extremely workable. However, it will always be the guitar that was cracked.

PS: Just put a locking nut on it, forget about the fix, now thats metal - Thu, 22 Feb 2007 7:42pm Edited: Thu, 22 Feb 2007 7:42pm

Calton cases eh? will do. I put way too much stock into those gibson hardshell cases. Locking nut eh? gues I'd have to grow my hair long, and start smoking hash thru

I did the same at the first ever pressure cooker show. mine wasn't a glue on neck (though zippgunn scott is right about that) and it was a terrible break. it was on a GK55, sort of a melody maker style. Dave Cahill did mine and while it wasn't the cheapest job it was solid work. Still my favorite guitar. Try old town strings.

Rob Nesbitt had rotten luck with his SG. I don't even know if it's still around... - Thu, 22 Feb 2007 10:29pm Edited: Thu, 22 Feb 2007 10:29pm

Hey,Steve, talking about Gibsons with maple necks, my Les Paul Deluxe has a maple neck. It's from 1980, and it has one of those "volutes" at the base of the headstock that is supposed to strengthen it, I believe. I've had no problem with it. The maple neck might be exclusive to Deluxes, I don't know. - Fri, 23 Feb 2007 9:00am

Hey Kent...yep most deluxes are maple necks, but done properly with 3 or 5 laminates and a volute...pretty hard to snap one of those.....I would be VERY curious as to exactly what type of mahogony Gibson is using....it sure doesn't really appear to be of a very high grade? who knows to each his own I guess... - Fri, 23 Feb 2007 11:27am

Another option is Eichi Ishikawa in Vancouver.
Dave Pellow is very good, but Eichi IS THE BEST!
The headstock on my '66 ES335 was broken and could not be repaired. Eichi Carved a new neck, and used the original fingerboard. He is the best you'll get. You pay a little more but guaranteed to be the best it can be. Not taking anything away from Dave, but Eichi is the Master.
Eichi is only open Mon-Fri noon to 6 and deals with Dan Foss Courier. Phone 604 732 5235. - Sat, 17 Mar 2007 9:14am

Well, its all fixed. I've had it back for a month now, and have played it for hours. It plays just like before the repair. The repair was not cheap, but the work done is
very good, the paint was color matched, blended and clear
coated - very nice work. I can strongly recommend Sonny Black. He told me that he has performed over 300 of these repairs. - Mon, 16 Apr 2007 12:45pm
