Hey Skai, huge one In New York, The LA drop was news to me as well.
There are actually quite a few 808, 909's and the such floating around town, Martin and some others kind of fleeced during the sell instantly for $1200 us days. Talk thr ol dudes we bought them in the 80's and tried to use them as real machines. I remember being at a friends dads house who played bass, he bought a tb303 new and never figured it out, offered to give it to me, at the time they were fetching huge coin....I showed hime the el rvo filter tweaking thing, he laughed and was happy with a hunny, still got it. - Wed, 7 Feb 2007 11:33am

Apparently there is one in Seattle, which I assume would be considerably easier to go to. Do they sell as well as rent?

I'm gonna have to get a 303, 808 and 909 sometime in the future... - Thu, 8 Feb 2007 10:59am

i've had 4 909' and 5 different 303's in the last 10 years. they are all over the place & not hard to find.

like I said, i have 909 (my last one) that i'd trade or sell. i've modded it to have a greater range to the decay of the kick, so it can do an 808-type kick as well.

quite honestly though, i really cannot see any reason to get either of these right now. there are so many things that can nail a 909 dead-on these days that do a million other things as well...but that being said, the 909 sound & especially the 303 sound is getting really cliche.

i've had 3 different 303 emulators (future retro 777, future retro revolution [still have these 2], mam MB33) & they all did so much more than a 303. while none of them nail the sound *exactly*, they are much more useful because they can do something different (which is why people all wanted a 303 10-20 years ago anyways...but now it's NOT "different")

anyways, from someone who has had a lot of this gear, save your money. I haven't released a record with a 303 or 909 on it in a LONG time. - Thu, 8 Feb 2007 1:25pm Edited: Thu, 8 Feb 2007 1:25pm

Well, as much as I'd like a 808 or 909, given how much they tend to go for I think I'll wait until I get something similar to a 303 first. Yeah, the 303 sound is somewhat dated in ways, and they do go for ridiculous amounts sometimes (some Moogs too), but what can I say- I love acid (among other genres). I've got a MC202 that I'm using right now, and I recently tried "multitracking/layering" my MS20 with/without slide/accent-like effects, but what can I say- a 303 sure is tempting! - Fri, 9 Feb 2007 8:22am

try a future-retro revolution if you like acid. it's great & sooo much better to progam than a 303. I was so sick of writing patterns down on little pieces of paper for those 303's.

the slide is the key because it changes the slide time based on the sequencer speed.. ie it always slides fast enough to get to the next note at the right time (& overshoots it a bit each time).

also, the ms20 doesn't have the right kind of filter. iirc, it's 2 filters (lopass&highpass) with 12db rolloffs. the 303 has a 24db rolloff

the other thing that makes it sound good is that the resonance increases with the accents.

I can abolutely nail a 303 sound on my modular, but the future-retro gets the acid sound in a deadly way & goes a lot farther. for that bouncy bass sound, the mb-33mk2 (which are super cheap these days) nails it EXACTLY.. you just need to sequence it.

for the price of a 303, you can get gear that will do exactly what you want, and a LOT more & be more reliable, etc etc. trust me, i've had lots of 'em :)

i also love the 303 sound (& feel), but i will never own another one.... - Fri, 9 Feb 2007 8:42am Edited: Fri, 9 Feb 2007 8:42am

Yeah, the MS20 doesn't quite sound like "acid"... that why I've been tweaking filters, recordings invdividual notes, and then sequencing them later in a tracker. It is still sounding pretty good as it is!

A Future-Retro Revolution? I've heard good and bad things about it, but I'll check it out... what about the Novation Bass Station? Those come in rack form, which is appealing to me, and they can be got for pretty good prices these days.

Mmmm... modular? What kind of modular do you have? I hope to own a good modular at some point in the future. - Fri, 9 Feb 2007 9:25am

the revolution does a better 303 than the 777 (I have both). the bass station doesn't sound like a 303 at all imo.

the best rack 303 i've found is the mam mb33-II. it completely nails it & does the slide really well. only problem, is that at really high res values it loses it. it's great for bouncy basslines. the revolution is best for harder acidy stuff. the 777 is best for doing all sort of different things because it has somewhere around 35 knobs. both the 777 and the revo have audio in - Fri, 9 Feb 2007 11:47am Edited: Fri, 9 Feb 2007 11:48am

ran an 808 through an ms-20 and ran into the yard to tell my good wife, Whoa, ME do JUNGLE! Nope the MS20 is not a 303. Its different and better. Feed us phat drum.

But, the xoxo kit box is killer 303 clone work plus. MUX certified. Me, I just want clean to send to Robin whittle for the new devilfish mods. But I'm picky, a clean unit for a swap and like used cars no problem units wanted.

Yes Virginia, 808s show up locally, next to UVIC or in Nanaimo, and clean, not smashed up like the one in the Music Experience exhibit.

Best 808 mod I know, add one resistor, Robin Whittle's on the web, easily undone as well and no original parts removed, no drilling.

Oh yeah, and, software 808 sucks. Not really but blam is blam, you know? 4x12 or 3x15 Peter Gabriel in Vancouver taught the chest kick shock. Look Ma no subwoofer needed.

Hi everyone. Just noticed this thread and I am interested to know if anyone is a synth diy kinda guy. Done a bit of this in the past, built stuff for people and myself, repaired synths etc. Would like to network. I love the smell of solder in the morning... - Sat, 10 Feb 2007 8:32am

My neighbor and I are getting in to DIY stuff. Neither of us probably have skills comparable to your own. I've been mostly sticking with circuit-bending stuff, and electronics unrelated to music. My neighbor has gone as far as modifying some pedals and stuff like that. Both of us have an order from Mouser to get our hands on some components to start making our own pedals from diagrams off the net.

I sure as heck wouldn't mess with a synth yet, but I'm gonna have to eventually! I'm sure one of my own will eventually need repair, or something to that effect. Plus those Piai kits sure look interesting... BUT even more-so building a MIDI to VC box is on the near-future list...

...in preparation for such times I've recently acquired an EPROM programmer. Honestly, I am very much a novice in such things.

Still, I would like to meet anybody I can learn from! - Sat, 10 Feb 2007 11:19am Edited: Sat, 10 Feb 2007 11:20am

Nice to see you guys warming up the iron, it's very satisfing to see and hear your baby work. I too have a midi/cv project for the future, to hook into an analog I brought back to life. Happy soldering, give me a shout if you think you need help. - Sat, 10 Feb 2007 9:38pm

I probably will need help at some point, but I don't think I'll start work on the MIDI --> CV box until next month sometime. If anyone is interested in meeting every now and then (maybe once a month) to swap tips/tricks, mods and other related ideas/information then I'm up for it. - Mon, 12 Feb 2007 9:46am
