Once at an Ozzfest I saw a group of violent, powder snortin, roid monkeys create a circle and take turns bloodying anyone that stumbled in. I was still to sick and skinny to do much about it. Then a real pretty young girl who looked like she was on acid or e wandered in. One guy stomped her ankle and then they started "passing" her around. I reached in, quikly pulled her out , put my body in front of hers so she could lean on me and stared them down. I've never recieved such purely evil glares. I thought they were gonna kill me. It was a huge pit of thousands and I think I had the backup of everyone around me cause I never got attacked. Security came in and cleared them out later on into the show.
The girl leaned on me for awhile then went on her way. I never spoke to her, I don't think she really knew what happened, other than she couldn't walk very good.
I protect my ribs and head when in pits. So far so good. - Thu, 7 Dec 2006 3:25pm

When I went to see Metallica......my girlfriend and I were in the front row against the gates on the floor......when they started playing, I got badly suffocated and fainted. The bouncers had to jump over the gate to pick me up off the floor and carry me back stage.I was so out of it.... they had to rush me to the hospital.....I had minor injuries........I was just pissed off I missed most of the show.....but I did get a good pic of Kirk Hammett from the front row lol. - Thu, 7 Dec 2006 3:51pm

I was at that Ozzfest! Besides the pit, I'll never forget that Slayer set & the numbers of people Seriously 'banging & air-guitaring to every note.

My worst pit injury was probably nothing more than a shot in the boob. Some were pure insanity so it makes no sense that I got off so easy. I've been VERY lucky, but also smart enough to stay out of the nastier ones. And most guys have been ridiculously kind the times I wasn't so smart - complete strangers pulling back in order not to hurt the 1 or 2 smaller girls who couldn't help but get in, or to watch out for us.
So now I stay out entirely. It makes me sad & frustrated as all hell though. - Fri, 8 Dec 2006 8:32pm Edited: Fri, 8 Dec 2006 8:33pm

I knew it. You just had this spaced out, no clue what you had gotten into look on your face. They purposly stomped your foot to disable you and then passed you around so fast you didn't get a chance to see who had you before you got passed to the next guy. It was very disturbing.
Your welcome, but really I had no choice. I couldn't just stand there and watch.

scariest one (though I didnt get hurt luckily) was at the Pantera/Trouble show at the Commodore, I was up near the front and it was packed, they were playing 'Domination' and some 350 pound motherfucker comes flyin' off the stage and lands right on my head. My neck went "Crunch!" and my earplugs popped out. Thought for a minute it might have been broken. At a show in Kamloops once some kid suckerpunched me in the kidneys. After checking for blood in my urine lol, I went back to the edge of the pit, waited til he let his guard down, got in a 3 point stance and speared him like Goldberg. The best part was how big his eyes got just before I nailed him haha. - Sat, 9 Dec 2006 8:53am

Probably the most brutalized I've ever been in a pit was a few years back, seeing Cannibal Corpse at the Starfish room in Van... Me and my buddy Bill went there for the show, and after, we were driving to Alberta... He got rufie'd... I was being a good boy and not getting in the pit until last song, aptly title "Hammer Smashed Face"... well it wasn't a hammer that hit me, but I got a flying forehead flat across the nose... drove to Alberta with double vision, bleeding all the way there...

Another good one was way back... Punish and ERD were playing at Heaven ... some jackass in the pit, who was part of the normal crowd there, came in thinking it was just another club night... when he realized it wasn't, he just turned asshole... he was picking on some chick who was about 5 foot nothing, standing on the edge of the pit trying to see the show... so I ended up mixing it up with him a bit, he pushed me onto the stage and I came up swinging... luckily, I still had my senses about me, cuz when I got up he was gone and a buddy of mine was about 6 inches from my fist.... Tony from ML7 had tackled the guy, and ran him 30 feet to the side, flat into a wall...

There's many more, but I've babbled enough for now

Ah yes The Starfish Room show. I wouldnt have gone near that mosh, Im not 7 feet tall and 300 lbs so Id have been dwarfed.

I stopped moshing many years ago, so as to watch a show.. but I never got injured in a mosh.

However Ill pass on Drunk Rich's story.. At The Accused/Forced Entry/Dayglos show at Sancha Hall ( I think it was Dayglos.. ) and there was literally a lineup of people going up the stairs to the backstage and then running and diving. Rich was complaining about his sore arm but we all called him a baby and made him get back in it, and he mustve done another 5-6 dives before the show ended.. next day he had a cast on his arm, he had been diving with his freshly broken arm and we made him do it.. What great friends hey!

At the same show Kurt got into it with some thug wanabe over whose chair it was, and they scrapped and Kurts arm went through a safety glass window and cut his arm artery.. it was messy! And he missed Forced Entry cuz he was in an ambulance. He was so pissed off.

And Mordock, the thread is about 'moshpit injuries...' not 'Im so much better than you all because...' - Sat, 9 Dec 2006 1:57pm Edited: Sat, 9 Dec 2006 1:58pm

well...I've been blind-sided many times (and so have pretty much everyone I know) trying to watch bands(broken glasses, cut face, bruised kidneys, etc), by assholes with no pit etiquette... who for some reason feel the need to try and stir shit up with the people who actually go to shows to watch the bands play and aren't just there for an adreneline rush (....and for some wierder reason, lots of these morons seem to be pathetically old to for this type of exorcism of, what should be teenage, angst.)

This isn't to say that at every show I am absolutely stationary, arms crossed, scowl fixed. The difference between a drunken(or otherwise) rock-out to a band, and a moshpit, is dependant on a douchebag factor. - Sat, 9 Dec 2006 3:28pm

I'm typically one of the 'just standing' types, which still lead to an injury. I think it was at the Zimmer's Hole show at the Ingy, Spencer was flailing around in front of me and smashed his elbow, by accident, into my new chin piercing. It smashed into my teeth and gums and the piercing never fully healed after that. You bastard! That is probably the worst injury I've substained, though almost every time I am at the front of a show, watching the band, I am grabed, and pinched in places men should not be touching me. It's fun to respond by flinging your leg behing into their shins, very farking hard, or punching, or getting male friends to make them fuck off. DON'T TOUCHY THE LADIES! - Sat, 9 Dec 2006 6:53pm

wow, some of these stories are intense.

I've gotten the usual assortment of bruises and weeklong aches from hardcore shows. Probably eight or nine nosebleeds. I've only had to go to the hospital once, and it was just when a hole got torn in my lip from a misguided fist at a show in tough as nails' jamspace. - Sat, 9 Dec 2006 9:00pm

For a long time I compared all other pits to that one. I'm a big guy and I was getting knocked around pretty bad. At Corrosion Of Conformity in like 86 or 87 I saw this kid stage dive and go down pretty hard so me and a guy next to me both grabbed his arms and pulled him up. When I pulled, his arm kind of kept coming but his body didn't really move. He had broken his arm so bad that it was totally limp from about mid bicep down. One of the sickest things I've ever seen at a show.
Worst part, he missed the whole COC set, I think he broke it during one of the openers, might have been Beyond Possession. - Mon, 11 Dec 2006 9:25am

My worst was at (wow this is embarassing) Soilwork and Hypocrisy in Seattle with my man Nik Olaz back in grade 11. I rushed headlong into the pit during the last Soilwork song and within seconds got smashed in the head with god knows what. BIG fucking deep gash ... plus I had hair then so it made it all the worse to actually see the damage. Needless to say, the rest of the show I stood around with a rag on my head soaking up blood. In retrospect I really needed stiches but here we are. I still have a visible scar. - Tue, 12 Dec 2006 4:31am Edited: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 4:31am

There used to be some good shows at the UBC sub ballroom to. And the Smiling Budha and the Lux theatre. Saw Curious George and SNFU at the Lux. Remember it being kind of like the York. I didn't see most of those places. :(
I often think how its a ToTal crime that local bands can't experience the Commodore stage like they used to, especially since its still there. What was it, like $3 for about 5 local bands every so often? I think it inspired a whole lot of musicians to move forward with their careers & earn future spots on those big stages, after getting a taste of what it felt like.

But these days I'll take anything where I don't have to see black & death metal bands (or any bands) play on club systems amongst disco lights & strobes. No, no and HELL NO!!!

And sorry, but to continue the derailment:
The York's in a residential area so they're not stoked about noise, and there are already too many restaurants on the Drive to give them a liquor license to help with profits. Someone had a plan for a theater-type deal so the arts scene could support it (much better/more experienced managers, scene support & funding, plus they need that size venue), and I was just hoping we could sneak the odd loud show in. I'll still be pushing for it, but the odds against ever using it as a loud music venue again are stacked up pretty high.

Aaaaaaand, back on topic: I remember after metal shows in SF, merch lineups were disgusting, bloody mashes of pulpy, mutilated flesh. Lots of speed or something back then. - Sat, 16 Dec 2006 2:04pm Edited: Sat, 16 Dec 2006 2:10pm

I feel i'm obliged to input something even though most people in Van apparently hate Trivium i went and i think it was thier last song and i was in the pit it was a circle pit and running full speed. Some guys on th side are sticking out their arms trying to pull people down and just see if they can clothesline people running. i got clipped in th shoulder did a spin to avoid falling. And some guy iuno who full out punches me in the eye totally taking me out. contact flew out i couldn't hear anything and don't remmeber much of that last song cause i was standing there wobbling and trying to put my fallen contact which onyl landed like on my nose cause i just got creamed backwards and caught it. but i had a good black eye for a week and a bit just huge.

think thats it =s... either then that.. i've had someone get tossed while surfing and i was at the gates and they just landed on my neck cause i was leaning over the railing and i just thought i broke something.

as for pit etiquette... chicks that think they desreve to be somewhere (sorry for some girls) like Alexisonfire some girl was yelling at me for having my hand on the rail and tried to pinch me scratch me and get a secrutiy guy to take me out casue my hand was on the rail and it was an "inconvenience" to her. My hand was scratched up and bloody and i was like you know what fuck you princess. If only i could muster up the balls to strip away the fact shes a girl and punch her in the face taht would've made my night.

I havent got anything horrible like hospital worthy. Respecting and looking out for others is very important when you weigh under 160lbs(: There was this one time at ozzfest when this massive basketballjersy wearing dick was going around kicking people, probably twice my size anyways he fucked with the wrong guy IM canadian eh we know how it works so I went after him shoulder to shoulder and sent him on his ass. His face was priceless when he got up and saw me lol. I was bracing for the vengence when ruin came on I started windmilling and swifting about and I never seen him again the whole time I was there. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP KIDS. oh and a time at some upstairs jam spot on hastings when some massive goons threw a 3inche oak table onto the pit and I saw it at the last second however under estimated its weight and thought I could stop it from working people with my arm but uh ya I got it in the head and started bleeding all over. They were probably expecting me to leave or whatever so to spite I started "giviner" with blood all running down my face very metal lol. Anyways some girls were real nice and cleaned me up. My appologies to the hostal for the blood stained pillow case. - Fri, 5 Jan 2007 7:16pm

One of the first shows I ever went to when i was about 14 -Severence and Malevolence in Fernwood a bunch of guys fell on me and fuck my knee hurt. They got off of me and I look at my knee and my knee cap was gone - it popped out of the socket and was on the side of my leg. Some guys picked me up to take me outside and it popped right back in and I was fine. Hurt though.

Aside from that some run of the mill chipped teeth, broken ribs, bloody noses and black eyes. - Fri, 12 Jan 2007 3:06pm

A broken arm at Slayer, it got punched and broke. Not me, my best bro. He has bad luck, lost his front tooth two years prior, he fell on his face walking on his hands at a show. Haha, he was toothless, he looked funny. - Sat, 3 Mar 2007 3:05pm Edited: Sat, 3 Mar 2007 3:10pm

At the Misfits reunion show at what used to be club soda in van close to a decade ago I was in the pit on their first song. I slipped in a puddle of what I hope was beer, and while I was standing up someone came down on my ankle. I hopped off the floor and found a stool. Looking down it turned out that my foot was pointing off in the wrong direction.
I spent a week in St.Pauls waiting for a surgeon to bolt my ankle back together, a couple bolts and metal plates and now I have my own built in barometre. - Sun, 4 Mar 2007 6:53am
