Digital Transmissions from a Sea of Shit...
(aka: The Archive Begins)

I'll post these randomly over the next few weeks and months. Some of you old-timers will know more about the examples in this collection of images than I do; And shame on you all who have not shared their memories to date... Now's the time, because I just might write a book about all you freaks.

You'll find a slightly larger one here:

Well, I've been an amateur archivist for years, not just in music but also printing, paper and books.

I have an interest in late 19 and early 20th century technology, even though in this life I am a computer geek. Go figure; I am almost exactly 150 years too young.

There is no doubt though that for a city the size of Victoria, there is certainly a larger than normal population of musician. Certainly the California of Canada climate AND music.

Livevic does not nearly represent all of the music projects and archive projects at work in this town. Ocassionally, It takes actual person to person shit, like 'Normal' people... Who would have thunk it? - Sat, 18 Nov 2006 12:45am Edited: Sat, 18 Nov 2006 12:48am

Hi thar.... good to see the Sea of Shit is alive! Yes archiving is a must!

As some of you might know a few of us have been at the painstaking process of archiving Victoria Underground 1978-84. the project is called "All Your Ears Can Hear" ..... I know after 6 years most of you have lost faith... including myself. But the project has started to build a little steam... I will be delivering the two master Cds and Cd graphix for production tommorrow... I KID YOU NOT! So in three weeks i will have two produced discs of early Victoria punk/ newwave/ alternative music. SERIOUS! 48 bands worth of music. We sent the CDs down to LA for mixing... and they sound GREAT! http://www.craigelse.com The guy from TWIStED MiNDS... anybody remember them?

Next step is the completion of the 100 page book that the CDs go in. The book is 90% done with just some clean up details.... it looks really good! So providing all goes well that will go to print in about a month...

anyway i just thought i would give you a rundown.

Lonemonk Vol 2 of this music project will need to be done! Jason Flower will be back here soon to start kickin our asses.

and i beg to differ with you about the "Normal people" to do these things..... You have to be INSANE to tackle stuff like this!

:) Never made money from collecting, and well, don't plan to, not my work.

Question: Who were SwellProd?!? (I know, I'm probably gonna take shit for that comment.)

Speaking of Incentive (now off topic), I just got the 2 other Breach demos I was missing, BUT they need work cause of the sound drops (sounds like a well played tape to me). Good thing I'm (hopefully) getting another copy of the songs from someone from Breach (sorry, my memory is bad for names). Good to hear more songs from them, can't wait to hear a new CD, whenever they get that done. - Mon, 20 Nov 2006 12:24am Edited: Mon, 20 Nov 2006 12:57am

I think we're both using Normal in very relative terms. I was getting at the fact that Livevictoria cannot possibly be the only avenue whereby people find out about projects such as we are talking about. I had heard rumour that Someone 'out there' is already writing a book about the Victoria punk scene. Haven't read that in here anywhere yet, but if someone knows about it then speak up...

Swell Prod were: Scott Henderson, Mark Franklin, Ken Kempster and Eric Proulx. I can't say I know which release these demos later became, but that will be added in the fullness of time. I have a great CD they did called:

Unquiet thoughts (Konkurrel 143/ Incentive 30/ 1993)

Archives dont tend to make money they only COST money.
They are done for the love of it, and the desire to preserve art for posterity and future generations. It's also a literally endless process, as no technology to date has proven itself to stand the test of time. The scans I am archiving now will need to be re-transfered within 5-10 years to remain current. Otherwise no one will know what a DVD-Rom was.... I will eventually be Printing this collection as well, because often times old-tech is the only tech that lasts....

Henderson says most of those people are living abroad, so who knows about whether that can be accomplished.

Yes, at least one MOC tape has come up so far, see the link.
I also may find others, probably only about 30% through the material so far despite how much time I've spent at it!

As I've explained to others, my current project is not an audio one, only imaging the Inventory of Master Tapes. The machines needed to (reliably) read all these tapes is questionable right now. It will take months to know whether the audio from these tapes can be extracted or not, and many of them will not even be attempted.

C'mon Ricky, talk is cheap, just release the project already (hell I'll even "buy" the CDs :). I'm curious, will any Tascam unit read the tapes, or does it have to be unit specific (I fergot the name of the Tascam deck). So as it stands, I'm one of the few people that has the demo and can give it out, or ask Larry from Renyold's Rocks to put it up on his website once he gets my VDRP archive.

Or... get the remaining members of MoC to re-release the demo and make money they deserve!!! - Sun, 3 Dec 2006 3:35pm Edited: Sun, 3 Dec 2006 4:01pm

For the most part, the machine has to match exactly the model us was recorded on, and even better the SAME machine. And in the analog realm that is even more complicated by tape alignment and azimuth adjustments, head condition, etc. In some cases the original result that was created way back (a cassette I would assume in this case) *might* sound better than the masters depending on condition of the tapes and condition of the machine. (Assuming the cassette was also treated and stored well and not thrashed upon).

Occasionally a manufacturer will release more than one model which are compatible with each other, but I have not determined yet whether any other (easier to obtain) Tascams are suitable or not.

You're last suggestion is probably the best one, but are MoC themselves even interested in re-doing the past? I am someone who looks back all the time, so I understand, but not everyone is built like that. Some people only look forward and basically reject what was done 10 or 20 years ago.

I'm all for archives and commemorative projects. I've offered to help in as many ways as I can, but I can tell you flat out, we ain't there yet with these tapes as they exist right now...
.
And please everyone keep in mind that you can possibly re-release everything from the past because it would take you so much time you would forget that music is still being made to this day. Also, while hunting down one tape, 10 others would be silently deteriorating....

Yes I agree. It's taken me almost 8 years hunting down and saving demos, I don't get demos every day, usually I'll find a dozen of them and then nothing happens for 6 months, then another dozen show up. If we're talking about demos I'm looking for, anything on the REQuest list would be awesome to find. Now thanks to Larry from Renyold's Rocks, I found a few demos I don't have, and he's dubbing over his copy of Medium Raw, so I'm still working on that demo close to 8 years later. True, it would take all my time to restore demos, but at least someone's hunting 'em down and saving them for people to listen to and relive past gl0riez!!! Perhaps Scott has a number of demos on cassette, we should start with them then get his Tascam fixed (if it's not too much money I'll pay to get the damn thing fixed) and work on the reels (stuff he wants kept takes top priority of course, and he doesn't have to remix the stuff really, I think the system I use works, take a listen to my attempt at RaNDom Thought Volume 2 for an example, Scott should have the CD around somewhere.). - Sun, 3 Dec 2006 6:00pm Edited: Sun, 3 Dec 2006 6:04pm

I am still receiving mail from others, so there must something up with your addressbook. I will send you something in a few minutes, please reply to it. In the meantime I will check my Spam filters.

Henderson's inventory is still in storage and is still being cataloged by myself. I have not started on any of his cassettes or mixdown stuff yet, except for ones he had already given me and are a part of my own collection. None of which have been the ones you're looking for.

It's obvious why finding demos is difficult: Only a VERY small quantity are made, typically onto formats that do not necessarily last very long.

Next is the nature of this type of recording. 'Demos' in particular are usually just that; Demonstrations of what the direction the finished album might take, or more simply just a means of showing the band how the material 'goes' before paying big bucks to make the record.
By their very nature, Demos are not meant to be a lasting product. Until later in life when people get somewhat nostalgic, I would imagine most bands do not even WISH their Demos to last. (Especially once they have become superseded by a more professional sounding version)

Look how hard it is to find some released material from the past... Demos will always be more difficult to locate in comparison.

Nope, no E-Mail yet. I will try to re-send. I dunno, I'm looking for anything that came out of Victoria, any music format. I dunno about bands not wishing to have the stuff avaliable again, every band I've spoken to is HUGE on the idea. I think it has to do with borrowing music and it accidently getting wrecked, more then anything. Demos are worth keeping cause there's a big demand for some of them (such as Mission of Christ-Silence in Grave), this demand however doesn't happen all the time. - Tue, 26 Dec 2006 4:44pm Edited: Tue, 26 Dec 2006 4:45pm

Perhaps you're using the word Demo differently from me. Also, if you read my post you will see that I mention people do appreciate these recordings more with time due to simple nostalgia.

On day two of a DEMO tape being in existence, its only job is to facilitate the REAL recording of the project. Its at this point that I think bands do not expect that this demo will have much longevity (and bands often NEVER take steps to make sure it achieves longevity).

Obviously 5, 10, 20 years later everyone is exciting about the fact that these have continued to exist.

Master tape and released recording preservation is usually a little bit different. Released recordings survive because there are many more copies of the same, and people tend to like their locally released LPs enough to treat them well.

Master tapes are often kept by people who spent a lot of time doing the recording and tend to help them survive as well. As we've talked about before, Master tapes have a different problem of machine compatibility, but usually the material still exists.

If you haven't received my email then you have a different problem on your side. The address you are using to send to me is wrong. (lonkmonk?; Read my name closely and compare)

I told you. People in bands don't realize they will want to hear those recordings two decades from now. I'm not speaking for everybody, I've always attempted to keep such things. If the band has lots of output, it can be near impossible to have a copy of everything you've given away. Sometimes, compared to the released version, the demo sucks and people would rather not hear it. Sometimes the Demo is better and people would rather not hear the Album.
.
I'll bet there are People's War recordings that I gave away and didn't keep a copy of. People's War however is an extreme case. All rehearsals were recorded by myself and/or henderson, there were 7 'official' CDs produced (5 as yet unreleased). Believe it or not it spans 70+ CDs. To use my example above, Tony Goluza ridicules this practice, and has no intention of listening to all that stuff. To each their own. Some people are just not interested in the past.

I'm just saying, I have kept meticulous records, and it still happens that shit gets lost.

Awww... jeez, your right... re-sending E-Mail spelled correctly :( I don't get Tony's attitude, don't you record jams so that you can figure out where you screwed up and improve the music?!? Tony says the same thing about his earlier work cept there still awesome demos (Section 46/Lootbag/Hudson Mack/are there any other demos?!?). Still, I really hate to see a mass of music just get forgotten about, I guess that's why I started collecting demos in the first place. The usual rule applies, if a band doesn't want me to distribute their demo, well let me know right, I don't wanna step on anyones toes.

Speaking of demos, I recently got in touch with Fans of Bad Productions, he has CD-R's I'm interested in (M-Blanket, Daddy's Hands, Nothing to Lose, Section 46, Lootbag, etc.) so I'll hopefully do a huge trade and get more stuff I'm missing. Wow..sure glad to see you are undertaking that huge project and restoring that stuff. I was totally amazed and excited to see the stuff I was carrying out of the closet when we moved Zippgunn's worldly belongings to the Monk Bunker. There were boxes of Victoria Music history..and most of the bands were ones I loved and love to this day. The full meal deal for me would be a gathering of info/music/history from all of the following:#1 Incentive/ dollhouse/rogers bowl (or was it max's?)/SeaOfShit recordings, I think back in around '92-93, most of my favorite bands were on Incentive.#2 Break Even (jay flower recorded a ton of great shit and imho some decent stuff from Nanaimo and further north) #3 Rats Nest similar to Henderson, Gary was recording pretty much the other half of the scene that flurished on the south island. Line-up was Morr, Dust, Shad and me. Recorded it in a warehouse with Bill (short-long) Crapelle, in about '94(??). It's on a cassette that might sound like shit by now. I'll have to see if I can convert to WAV and MP3, maybe run it through compressor/eq/limiter as it never was mastered. Anyone interested to hear it? - Thu, 29 Mar 2007 2:41pm

I spoke with Mark actually, he's sending me said demo (I thought it was a 5-track demo) so I'll run it thru Clean (like I always do) and give it some umph!!! :) But yes, totally convert it to WAV/MP3. - Thu, 29 Mar 2007 3:51pm Edited: Thu, 29 Mar 2007 3:51pm

Hey Joe 90: I can do you one better; I have the actual master DAT recordings of the Crapper's session. Sounds like ass but it's probably as good as it gets with this recording. Not mastered or anything but I doubt it will get a lot better no matter what gets done to it. - Mon, 2 Apr 2007 1:38pm

Hey Zipper, it gives me a warm fuzzy to know you're out there. To be clear, are you sure sure we're talking about the same session. The first, meat-locker one with Bill is the worst sounding of the three sessions we did under the final line-up. Then, we recorded with you. Then, we recorded with Bill again in a warehouse that served mainly as a distribution point for insulation. What a dis-loyal, fickle, two-faced bunch we were. Wait, isn't that what defines a musician, generally? Add to that, lazy, poverty-stricken, self-important, etc. Ha. Anyway, if you do possess the one of which I speak, can I ask, did you win it by beating Bill in a round of gin rummy or something? Or, did you acquire it by losing the round? Anyway, I managed to dig up the tape, and to my surprise, it has survived time and poor storage practice rather well. I run Nuendo in my studio, and have some pretty good UAD-1 based mastering tools, so I'll try to sweeten it up as much as possible. It's funny as I catch myself actually convincing myself for even a second that this holds any importance at all. The best thing that came out of digging up this tape was also digging up a live Harpo's recording of Color Out of Space, and an Onionhouse tape. Anyway, very good being in touch, Scott. I hope all is well. - Mon, 2 Apr 2007 3:31pm
