Actually some fonts are so impressive that they are hard to tell they are fonts. Fonts rule... plus you can make your own letters into fonts, its all art, unless some band uses VERDANA or COMIC SANS, then forsure those fonts SUCK for a logo.

Small example of a great use of fonts:

Sweet link!

I think the whole computer art vs by hand comparison is irrelevent. I believe that both computers and ink can be equally effective mediums for artists to render their vision with. - Wed, 13 Sep 2006 12:28am

Yes great post Platoon! Plus when you hand draw your logo you have to (or SHOULD) vector it on the computer anyways, so you can have it for print. - Wed, 13 Sep 2006 11:24am

Totally agreed with Knife Ghost.

People who "shit on fonts" are totally close minded. A logo looks good when it does, whether or not its a font. For example you could easily take the letters from that IRONSTRIKE logo and make them into fonts.

I guess hand drawn is the "cool" way to go.. but if you want to do anything proper for print you'll have to vector it on the computer. - Thu, 14 Sep 2006 3:08pm

I was'nt born yesterday, I understand the need for fonts for many things. I.E. Corperate logos. I dont think fonts are usless for everything.
We are talking about MUSIC. Music is hopefully personality, and for everyone(band) should be original in many ways. For me the Logo is the first thing, the first impression. Fonts become lifless once they have been used for thirtty five stores, eighteen books, and a few street signs. I realize I could make an IronStrike font. I dont want to. Then some other unoriginal band with no friends who are artists or are to lazy themselelves to materialize the bands sound in a Logo can go use my font so everyone can go "Hey nice logo dude".

If you want to sell lots of records under the grounds that the music cant sell its self, Go for it use a fuckin font. I belive Destroy-the-flesh's band Horde of Anachrons logo is very tastfull, and font like. But has the edge of the unique qualitty of its artists hand, the vocalist in the band.

And to "knifeghost" that logo is not perfected. But I care only enough to say this. Where the fuck is yours?
Oh and by the way, I have designed logos for many bands, and a few shops and company's who wished not to use a font. All were happy save one band. - Thu, 14 Sep 2006 5:24pm Edited: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 5:28pm

Uhh ok... we are basically saying fonts can be great as well in addition to hand drawn logos. Saying you shit on fonts is not a constructive way to explain what is wrong with fonts.

There are millions of fonts, and like I said, sometimes you would be surprised what logos are actually fonts. - Thu, 14 Sep 2006 6:45pm

destroyer, my "looks like ass" comment wasn't directed at any logo in particular, it was a blanket statement.

I frankly don't give a fuck about your design cred, and won't offer my design cred as a counter, because that's all irrelevant. What's relevant is that you've made a stupid blanket statement and people are calling you on it. Are you seriously making the case that it's impossible to make a personalized and meaningful logo using a font? - Fri, 15 Sep 2006 12:15pm

Who cares what a logo looks like as long as it serves its function...THE FANS CAN RECOGNISE IT

Lets make it really clear, using computers to produce original art is fine, downloading a font and using it for your bands logo is lame.

take a look at how many bands share the abbadon font, local band mainswitch as well as carnal forge for starters - Sun, 17 Sep 2006 1:34pm Edited: Sun, 17 Sep 2006 1:36pm

I don't really like using fonts but they do have their place. If I wasn't able to create my own text I would probably rely on them more. Metal Bands would mostly be shunned for using generic typefaces while mainstream rock groups can get away with it more. The only time I'm bothered by a band using a plain font is when I recognize it as being used somewhere else.

As for these roots or shooting vein logos I really dislike them. They're just messy looking and most look like they could have been made by some 10 year old during math class. - Tue, 19 Sep 2006 11:17am Edited: Tue, 19 Sep 2006 11:39am

also... consider: If the fonts used bother you, maybe heavy metal just isn't for you. Try pop-punk, their bands logos are super easy to read. - Mon, 16 Oct 2006 12:29pm Edited: Mon, 16 Oct 2006 12:35pm
