Its my opinion that bass player are a dying breed! Why?! There are to many guitar players and not nearly enough bassists! Its going to be, before long that bassists are going to be like the sabertooth tiger or the dinosaur. none left, all gone! THIS IS A NATURAL DESASTER!!!

We must stop this colamity before its to late!
People listen! Start playing bass befor its to late!

You'll still get chicks and people will respect you. - Tue, 22 Aug 2006 5:21pm

Objection! We're around, but we know we're a hot commodity and so we're pretty selective about what we take on.

For example, I recently jammed with a pretty solid-sounding group but took a pass because they had no drummer. There was seemingly no urgency to find a drummer -- but a preference to solidify the material in preparation for the drummer who will eventually fall from the sky. Since I want to play shows ASAP, I pulled the plug early.

So don't despair, we're there. The laid-back nature of bassists is in line with the practice of lurking on message boards like this one.

Incidentally, I'll be looking for a band in late October after a X-Canada road trip as roadie for Vincat. Look me up then! My info's in my profile. - Wed, 23 Aug 2006 8:50am

It's true there are fewer of us, and it's true that we know we're a hot commodity. And when it comes to finding a bassist who wants to play black/death metal your list of bassists gets even shorter. Now take those bassist and weed out the ones that aren't already in other bands, and there isn't much left.

I agree with Chad though. More people need to learn bass. Bass playing is a dying art because everyone now doesn't have bassists...they have guitarists playing bass cause they can't find bass players. Which has led to one of the biggest hatreds I can think of as a bassist...it's led to pushy guitarists telling bassists how to play their instruments! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've quit bands over this.

Anyway thats my rant.

just sounding in on side with the "Bassists don't get chicks or respect" aruement. Advice for the remaining bassists...take up the indie cello and pretend to be artistic. as a bassist I can say with a certain amount of conviction that bass is dead for a reason: nobody likes bassists.

Based on my experience, singers get about 75% of the chicks at a show, guitarists about 20%, and the drummer and the bassist fight over the remaining 5%. However, the drummer's usually in better shape than you, has more tattoos and plays with his shirt off. So, you're pretty much screwed. This is why bass players are so good at video games.

Your best bet is to play with really, really ugly people. - Mon, 28 Aug 2006 5:52pm

C'mon, accept the world for how it is and get your guitar-playing buddy to take up the bass. Anything more than a competent guitar player can do on bass is showing off. - Tue, 29 Aug 2006 2:37am

I've had ads on here for months looking for ANY musicians and haven't gotten many bites. One person I haven't heard from at all is a bass player, let alone a bass player who's into stoner tunes. If you do hear from someone, you end up having to train them. I'm not the best teacher and have dick all for theory knowledge. Oh, and the answer is to play with your shirt off and do lots of cock-pushups if you are a bass player. Odds may go up a bit after that. - Tue, 29 Aug 2006 12:13pm

Been a fukin guitarist for YEARS, couldn't get shit. Then i realised "Hey, i can suck at an instrument, but still be in a band!" SO i took up bass. Bought the thing, 6 hours later some fag was knockin at my door. I answered an ad looking for a wikkid bass player.

WIKKID BASS PLAYER; Noun; 1. Guitar player who couldn't do fuckin shit after the low 4. 2. A drummer who realised that all his friends were musicians so he may as well try and become one too.

So my 2 cents; All you girly guitar players out there who constantly put up ads looking for a band...stop it already. Supply and demand as Jarod has said. We need more bass players. If i had a dollar for every time someone has emailed me looking for a bass player, i probably wouldnt have needed to do the idiotic thing of playing gay-ass radio rock however.Stick to METAL! - Wed, 30 Aug 2006 9:03am Edited: Wed, 30 Aug 2006 9:04am

Time to through my 2 cents in... Been playing bass consistently in bands in Victoria for over 20 yrs. I'm not a guitarist-turned-bassist, I started with bass, and will play bass 'til I die....Always involved with multiple projects, but very selective. The key to staying busy and a good musician is being VERSITILE. There are other types of music besides punk & metal. Take some chances, try something new. To answer the thread...this is one bass player who doesn't apply to ads becuase I want to stay busy, not be pigeon holed into one type of music. Just some advice from years of riding the live scene for a few decades. (Old-Timer)

I think drummers are much tougher to find than bass players. Almost every band Ive been in had some kind of issue with a drummer...reliable pro solid drummers who are willing to perform/record plenty styles of rock music are like dust in the wind nowadays.

I think that rock keyboard players are the actual dying breed. You'd be hard pressed to find a rock band with no bassist, as this is considered an oddity if you like. Keyboardists, on the other hand, are considered optional and are indeed getting rarer IMO. I played Battle of the Bands with Old Town Fuzz this past April, and we were considered "the band with keyboards." And it's making my search for a keyboard player for my new band rather difficult.

In comparison, bass players are a dime a dozen. Bassists have it good because there's always bands looking for a bass player. - Thu, 31 Aug 2006 6:03pm

"I think that rock keyboard players are the actual dying breed. "

Are you shitting me?

That's like saying that maybe we should look into some kind of preservation program for the carrier pidgeon. Rock keyboards are DEAD.

I'm not saying rightly so. I'm just saying that's how it is. - Fri, 1 Sep 2006 1:20am

Man, the music I like is slathered in keyboards. But not the kind that you need a "rock keyboardist" for. When I hear "rock keyboards" I think Faith No More. And you just don't see that anymore. - Fri, 1 Sep 2006 7:54pm
