| Matteus User Info... | SO I just came back from the Vans warped tour. It was sweet. I have never moshed so much in my life!! One thing that I noticed though was the amount of chicks in the pit. Now, I'm not trying to be sexist, but do some of these girl THINK before they go in there? I had to lift out a handfull of girls who were maybe 80 pounds soaking wet to the front before they got crushed or trampled on. Dont get me wrong, I have seen girls hold their own in there, but quite often they have guys keeping an eye on them. Do they even know that they are being watched over? Sure it happens, often cause of some moron who thinks their all punk rock, or metal or what ever, and has some thing to prove, but normally you are not in there to hurt people, and in any good pit people should not have to be able to bench or leg press any ammount to be able to dance and have fun... Even the hardcore kids for all the flack they take understand this for the most part, except mayby joey, but thats just joey... No wonder 80% of people in bands in our scene are men, and no wonder our scene in general is so male doninated... It was these kind of attidudes that fucked up the edmonton scene a lot, and they have about 20% women in their scene it seams... I have met gals that figure they could not make it in a pit, but they never tryed, and I think the only person that I ever met that could not be in the pit was disabled... I seen little kids go in the pit, shit a 4 yr old in edmonton at a ripcordz show, his name was GG. First, I was refering to the larger moshpits like at warped tour, oz fest and large concerts, not ones here. There's a thousand people pressing down on you and you have to be able to hold your own in there or risk the chance of getting hurt (which is kinda the fun of it all). Or for example, I saved this one girl from getting her neck snapped from a guy who had been launched from the back of the pit 4 feet in the air. He would have landed right on her neck. I pulled her out of the way and the guy landed on his spine. She looked and me and said "thanks" like I had just held open a door for her, not saved her from injury. And trust me XJayX, if your wife wants to throw it down, cool. It's all fair game in those pits. The way I understood it was that people thought it was wrong to say that girls are generally not built for moshpits, which seems very PC to me. What if someone said that women were generally less good at, say, hockey? Would that be ok? It's pretty similar to me, but it seems there's a stigma around saying that kinda stuff in other situations. It seems everyone's so afraid of sounding sexist that they can't acknowledge real, let's say statistical, differences. Maybe I missed what everyone is in upheaval about. As Endeløs said, everyone should be welcome into the pit. One takes the risk no matter who they may be, and if they get hurt, I will give them a kick in the ribs as they are dragged out. That's pretty uncontroversial, and I don't think that's what anyone's reacting to. What bugs me is the idea that those girls don't know exactly what they're getting themselves into. I love the pits at a good show, i don't go in as much as I use to, but shit if I make it to the ripcordz, I will probably enjoy a quick dip in the pit. I have never punched any one in a pit, and when people are doing shit like that you pull em aside and exsplain this is dancing not ufc, when people fall you pick em up, in propper pits there is seldome an injury, some skanking, some pushing, and dancing, and maybey some riding on shoulders, or shit in a bigger pit some crowd surfing... I saw the UK Subhumans in Montreal, a massive pit probably 2000 people, and people were still super cool. I was in the pit when conflict played the next night to a crowd of 1000, no problems. I don't go into a pit to hurt or get hurt, so I guess I don't know what I am getting into, maybe what was meant by this thread was that small people should be more carefull choosing which pits to go into, cause some have stupit people dancing in them. | Rawb User Info... | A lot of this thread is a series of people explaining what they'd like pits to be. ot what they are or where they came from. Once upon a time pits were violent. The very nature of their existance was built on agression and frustration and was a further extension of what was a very agressive form of music. Especially in the Hardcore scene in it's early days. Now I'm not saying that (usually) people were out to hurt each other, but that was often the end result. We would pick each other up and help each other out but just as much as that kind of "community" positive spirit was represented so too was the expectation of intensity and aggression. The danger was part of the fun. I think denying the violent nature of "moshing"-a word I dislike-is kind of like lieing to yourself. Without a doubt pretty much every single show I have ever been to there has been a few girls up front in the pit that really have no clue and are always about one second away from having someone removing the top of their head. It's not sexist, it's a fact six foot tall, two hundred pound guys going nuts is not an enviroment most women would be able to survive in. I have seen many women got knocked flat on their ass and a few of them I have seen k.o.ed because of it. Then of course everyone gets mad at the guy cause he was in a mosh pit doing his thing. Well really now if you want to play where the guys are acting like animals dont expect them to act like anything else. If you want to dance to the band at a show where there is a pit going on, dont bother going in unless your prepared to get hurt it is really that simple. It isnt fair to the girls to get smacked around in the pit, but it isnt fair to the guys to have to stop having fun just because it isnt politically correct to hit a girl.
