Zuckuss at The Columbia April 21
Live Review

Zuckuss performed second after Shores of Tundra and before handi-grinders Tard. Zuckuss is a pornographic take on Star Wars. Zuckuss song titles feature tracks such as ‘Tit Fucked by Tauntaun’, ‘Assgasm’ and ‘Rancor Rim job’. This porno grind metal band was highly anticipated by some enthusiastic metal heads as a premier Grind band of Vancouver.

Zuckuss stormed the stage with three of their members in costume. The lead singer wore a camouflaged street goalie mask, while the drummer wore a Palpatine-esque open front robe, while at the same time one of the guitarists wore a militant, burka-like, dervish mask wrapped around his face so only his eyes were showing. The costumes of the band members added a militant image to their stage show.

Lights, camera, action! The show kicked off with the band storming the stage and pummeling the audience with blasts, heavy grooves, and grinding riffs. ‘Assgasm’ was introduced and before you knew it the next song had started. The cameras were roving around the venue like mad taking in the band from at least 3 different angles while taking in the antics of the audience members as well. Song five was announced as a ‘little ditty’ which was meant to describe the ‘molestation of Princess Leia’.

The band members were constantly engaging the audience by sticking their faces, guitars, and karate kicks into the faces of the ‘scramblers’ up at the front. Zuckuss was constantly in the audience’s faces stirring the giant grinding mosh pit that they were so adept and creating. By about song six, Zuckuss had proven that they are a premier Grind act with all of the necessary elements which included perhaps the most insane drumming of the night. By song seven, former Death and current Strapping Young Lad drummer, Gene Hoglan had made his way to stage right where he took in the drumming feats of the Zuckuss drumming monster. Gene would periodically re appear watching the band grind away. The bassist of Zuckuss appeared to be reading sheet music(?) on stage while grinding away. By around song eight the mosh pit at the front of the stage was going strong as song nine was dedicated to all of ‘the scramblers’ up at the front going crazy for the porno grinders. By around song ten the band decided it, and the crowd, needed a little breather from the high speed and relentless insanity that had been constantly pummeling all in the vicinity of the stage.

Before long, the band would kick things back into high gear with their speedy, pummeling, relentless, grind which was complimented by the occasional slow motion rhythm sections. With most of the set behind them, the lead singer announced to the crowd that a live DVD/Album was being recorded and that if they wanted to be on a Zuckuss album they had better go fucking wild! The crowd complied and the show went on moshing like mad for the pummeling, relentless, grinding music of Zuckuss.

Zuckuss is a band to experience. If you see that they are playing in your town, go and watch this premier Grind act. Zuckuss’ set was a thunderous, blazingly pornoriffic set that any fans of extreme metal could appreciate. - Mon, 24 Apr 2006 2:29pm Edited: Mon, 24 Apr 2006 3:13pm
